Restoring old broken pocket knife - New handle from bottle caps

I bought a lot of pocket knives for few euros. One of them was this rusty vintage knife. It was made in Solingen, Germany. I don't know anything else about it. It looks like it was made maybe in 50's and the handle could be made of ebonite. I wanted to try to do a recycled plastic handle because I thought it would look pretty similar to the original one although a wooden handle may have looked better. Also recycling is always a good thing these days. And I guess since I'm an "influencer", I should do something good with that every once in a while say maybe one or two of you get interested in recycling stuff because of this.

I started by disassembling the knife. While doing this I noticed a previous owner had replaced one of the pins with thicker copper pin. And drilled also larger holes for the tools.Using one larger pin would have looked ugly so I decided to weld the holes shut and drill new holes.
Before welding I had to remove the rust. Also from inside the hole.That is important. I used MC-51 rust remover because that's what I happen to have. i'm not sure if there is huge difference to vinegar other than more pleasant smell. I might have to make a test video of different rust removers...
After I had welded the holes shut I was sure the original heat treating of the blade was gone so I had to do that again. In hindsight I probably could have done the quenching in oil. but seemed to work and the did not crack so it's all good. After hardening I tempered the blades in an oven. This makes the blades less brittle so they wont break.
The old brass sheets between the tools had also the large hole. So I needed to replace those too. I used a scroll saw to cut new ones out from sheep of brass. Then I stacked them in a pile and used double sided tape to hold them together while I used one of the old sheets as a jig to drill the holes for the pins.
For the handle as mentioned I used plastic bottle caps. i had sanded off the brand on the top because I didn't want to have any other colors in the plastic and also because that would probably prevent the caps from melting together. Ideally I would have an extrusion machine to make the plastic bar but I don't so I just made a mold from wood and used baking sheet to prevent the plastic from sticking to the wood. Without it you only have a sticky mess. I tried to press all the air out but I also had to do some fixing afterwards. It wound have been better to have a metal mold where I can heat up larger quantity on the plastic and the use vice to something to force all the air out. But next time I'll know better. This time I was really just counting that I can find a spot with no bubbles from inside that bar, and I did. The bottle capsare made from HDPE plastic. It needed maybe 270 degrees celcius to start melting but the pieces stuck better together with a little more heat. Eventually I ended up using something like 350 degrees.
After making the bar I just cut and sanded it to shape and drilled the holes using the brass sheets I had made. As final step I tried if my metal polish compound would work on this too. It did a decent job, the best I could find when testing different methods, but you can't press the part against the wheel hard at all or it will start melting. So, patience young padawan.

@J S there's no eco friendly power. Renewables use more fossil fuels than power plants working on fossil fuels. Each renewable energy farm needs gas turbines to stabilize the output of the useless wind and solar or you'll fry the grid that's why oil companies are investing in this stupidity. But for the plastic it's a good thing to be aware of it as landfills are getting packed and a very small amount is recycled that's on top of the electronic waste like solar panels which by the way their manufacturing process is by no way green.

Maurice Hachache Not to mention the impact solar and wind farms have on the environment due to the massive footprint required to actually power several hundred homes. I think that newer constructions and remodels could benefit from their own solar on the roof and a small wind turbine in the yard, that would be enough. These massive expanses of them though, that’s just detrimental to the local ecosystem and makes no damn sense.

Things I do to help protect the environment. I drive a small car but use it rarely. I bike ride or walk whenever possible. I never leave lights on in the house. When I leave a room, it's dark. I live in a VERY small house: 4 rooms (it's all I need, I'm single). I do almost everything online to avoid paper usage. I buy food made locally so it doesn't burn fuel to transport it. I could go on, but you get the point. Funny, my brother is the opposite. We're 60'ish and he says, "who cares?", we'll be dead anyway. Well, some of us do. I do.

Thank you... You don´t know this but, my first pocket knife, were quite similar to that one it was also made in Solingen, Germany.... I got it from a older friend of my mom´s back when i were around 8 or 9 in in 1980-81... The other older boys told me that you need to ba at least 9 years old to get a knife, the man told me that i could have his old pocket knife, because he didn't need it anymore.. Many of the Restoration channels I've seen don't seem to even care about heat treating blades, so it was nice to see you do that. However, quenching a blade in water (Rather than Oil) can sometimes make the internal grain more brittle and larger. What do I do for the Environment? I Exhale Carbon Dioxide...Which Plants & Trees Need to live and grow bigger. And they Reward me by putting out Oxygen...Which I Need to Live and Grow bigger! Very, Very Nice Restoration !!

I agree. As a homesteader, we have to repair and/or restore things as we cannot afford to keep buying new. The result is we get the castaways from friends and it's a big blessing to get a 'free' item for the time, work and whatever scraps we have laying around. My green thing is only to commute by bicycle. I have never driven a car to work in 35 years. For the green thang I own a plastic 70mpg three wheeled car and get me leccy from ecotricity and I always try and repair and recycle whenever possible, I would cycle but being disabled and a bad ticker has put that one out of reach for me, also now meat free as become a huge quorn fan. You know, there's a whole group of people who are just fanatical about pocket knives. I'm not one of them but if you get a lot of knives, restore them doing a good job (and we all know you will), maybe add some type of unique feature not found on other knives of the same type, you might be able to pay for the whole lot in just one sale. I love this restoration. Very nifty with the bottle caps. Not surprised that you think about our environment since you make do and mend. I sew a lot of my clothes to participate as little as possible in fast fashion. One pair of jeans needs 8000 litres of water and then the shipping, it's really not a good thing for our future. I like that old can opener on it. Completely different design than the one that's on my granddaddy's "Forest Master" from the 60s which is a different design than my modern Swiss army knife. But the bottle opener/screwdriver on all three is practically identical.

Solingen is in Germany and known for it's superior steel that is used in knives. We used to say 'Greetings from Solingen' as a joke saying when someone got stabbed in a movie.

I found an old food processor where the metal part of the top blade thing was removable. by inserting a piece of cardboard to fill the gap, then gluing down a round of sand paper, I can sand the bottle caps and such into a powder. the processor catches all the dust and grains. makes melting it easier, and you can actually fill a mold that way. No waste at all.

Our neighborhood has a required recycling system. We have one trash can for trash, one for recyclables. We have a truck that picks up the trash and one that picks up the recyclables. They are picked up on different days.
