MrPete, I just wanted to say thank you for putting this series together. I bought a used 1965 model from a retired machine shop teacher in Indiana and proceeded to restore the whole thing. Your videos helped me a lot with basic disassembly, but I took it all the way down to every last piece because it was in pretty bad shape. I removed and rebuilt the oil pump because the check balls were rusted up, and also re-machined the torn up transfer arm and made a new, oversized sliding block out of bearing bronze and a new shoulder bolt too. The square-head bolt on the rocker shaft is relatively easy to access when the case is clean and dry. The motor had been replaced and it was wired backwards so the gears ingested a lot of chips. The ram ways were worn scalloped and the table ways were swagged out causing table droop. I hand-scraped it all flat and true again and repainted, rewired it all, and remachined the dovetails on the head because it had been crashed and twisted....and a thousand other details. I also scraped the vise to make it true. For all the details, and if anyone else is interested in what it takes to go "all the way" into one of these, here is a link to a thread where I documented most of what I did. www.artfulbullet.com/index.php?threads/south-bend-7-shaper-refurbishment.7699/

I am very glad you liked my series. I just read your entire narration on your link. That was one heck of a big job that you under took. You went a lot further than I did. And yet I worked on mine for probably over a month. You must be very happy with the results. They are very nice little machines aren’t they

Mr. Pete, you do a great job!! I have been a machinist since I was 8 years old! My neighbor had a shop and I would seat and watch him machine things. He talked to my parents to see about teaching me, my parents told him I would get bored. I am 65 years old and have owned my own shop for 17 years now. I learned the old way. God bless you!!

I just picked one up too - three days before I left for a month-long, 7700-mile cross-country road trip from PA > Colorado> Calif and back to visit my grandkids (began on 17 Sep 20), a 7" South Bend shaper came up for sale locally. I only had time to set it in my shop before I left. Now that I'm heading back to PA tomorrow, and after watching this series of videos, I'm motivated to get home to try out that fine piece of American machinery. But I wanted to share this: My 5 1/2 year-old grandson likes to watch machining videos with me, and at one point he looked at me thoughtfully and asked: "Grandpa, if they use machines to make other machines, then how did the first machine get made?" Very profound, I thought.

Great series Mr. Pete. Thank you! You're 100% correct on the 3 electrical brands being the best. In the mills I worked in we would do everything we could to maintain the old ones and did were truly sad when we had to downgrade to new. Westinghouse also made some fine equipment. Just a fantastic series Mr. Pete, but you still gotta do one with this making some chips. It would be a pain, but the base to body bolts may need additional "snugging" in a criss-cross pattern to help with the leak.

As Mr Pete already said, the plug the other way around would be extremely dangerous as the exposed pins would then be connected to the mains side. If the plug is disconnected and the power still on then its electrocution lesson time.

Super series of videos and very enjoyable. The oil leak is coming from above the point where you dipped your finger, I could see some dribbling down from wherever it was escaping. As for switch gear in the UK some of the old gold was Bulgin, mostly bulky but you could rely on it no matter what you did with it. Another was Volex, and we had some dashpot starters on equipment that was installed in 1888 when the workshops I served my apprenticeship in was built. Maybe they had a few contacts changed over time, but they worked without fault always!

Hello Lyle, firstly, I had Cataracts removed about two years ago. Has made a major improvement on my distance vision, such that I no longer have to wear glasses to drive. My close up vision now requires glasses. It is a weird sensation having the Cataract removed and the new lens fitted, as you are awake through it. Nifty little shaper. I liked seeing the insides & how they work. I had cataracts that made it hard for me to see the Vernier marks. About a year ago I got lens implants. I opt for the ones that have variable focus. No glasses needed. They have worked great. At first there are "stars" around lights at night but now not an issue. The variable focus added a lot to the cost, about $8K. The standard units would have been fully covered by Medicare and my supplemental insurance. I think not needing to use glasses makes it worth the extra $ if you can swing it. Hell to get old! I'm 78, older than dirt.

love the videos. could take the table downstairs and use the mill to clean up the table or just stone it and "go!" maybe you could do a video on what to do with a shaper? thank you for putting your knowledge on "film" for the future machinist's education.

Mr Pete, thank you so much for this brilliant series. I think you've done a cracking job on that shaper and very much look forward to seeing it make some chips. Cheers, Alan.

Hi Lyle, very nice job. So, a "finished nut" is the very last one installed for the end of the assembly. Usually done shortly before "first sips". Stay safe and well :)

Another interesting project completed. About the "weeping" rocker arm shaft? Would it be possible to add an O ring on the shaft to stop the messy oil seepage, or is it too crooked to chuck in a lathe? Thanks.

Awesome series Mr. Pete and please don't think me a "critic Nasi". In the area of cross rail feed pawl lever and rod; a brass shoe was used about 1/4" long or better with the set screw so the flat on the rod was not necessary. You also seem to be missing a short broad phillips head dog tip screw to hold the rocker arm pivot in place on the yoke/lever. The rod was probably bent by adjusting the table height up without loosening the adjustment set screw (and then turning the machine on). A 29" belt is the correct size on the adjustable side and a 28" on the motor. If you thought the 29 to long, back out the taper head screw on the back of the main body. The "black stuff" used on the oil return trays was pitch tar. I used Indian head gasket sealer on mine, or another alternative is melted resin which was also used on the oil pump and lower electrical box to seal them from oil seepage. I like the motor disconnect idea and just making a motor guard cover for mine; I should have heeded your direction of a 2-piece method from your guard making videos. (hard to bend 1 curve over the other and getting the bend point distance right... Best to you and yours and thanks for the awesome videos!

Finish nuts are made in Finland! I would run much heavier gear oil, those gears under load will overcome that thin oil film strength. But what do I know I did NOT stay at a Holiday Inn last night!
