Welcome to part 1 of restoring The Doctor a 17th Century portrait attributed to John Ryley 1646 - 1691. This painting is from a private client and is in for a clean. Something tells me this isnt going to be straightforward and things take a turn as the cleaning develops.

This doctor comes across as a nice practical dignified no nonsense man The subtlety of the message of him being a doctor on the book is good - it says what it needs to say -nothing flamboyant - no ‘magical’ medical instruments I bet he was very re assuring for his patients

For those who enjoy watching but don't do work anything like this. When a solvent swab hits an adhesive, varnish or whatever material you're trying to remove, it goes from being like a dry nail varnish, through a dry jam consistency, to honey and then is cleaned off. Of course every material proceeds differently, but you can really feel that difference between dry, gummy and then gone. So satisfying to feel that solvent working and see what comes away.

Those gloves look quite heavy duty - more like riding gloves than ‘social’ gloves So perhaps again at a nod at his status with having a house with stables? And also subtle hint at a vigorous practical man who rides a horse rather than using a carriage day to day

I once avoided a painting I loved because I knew enough to know it needed a full restore and figured I couldn’t afford it.

I watch a guy restoring a house in France and I liked his music enough for me to Shazam it - and it was called Come Tomorrow by George’s Town The intro is quite long but once you get into it it is very pleasant music only score to listen to
