The weather has been beating us down but that didn't stop us from taking a quick look into a new project car, a 1948 Pontiac Streamliner Deluxe! There are a few unfortunate surprises, but as always, we'll adapt and overcome!

The best people to contact I used to belong to it. It’s called a Pontiac Oakland club. There’s some old timers in there that know everything.

Hello! What a find! It's gonna take a lot of work and a few bucks, but it'll be worth it in the end. I hope you choose to keep it as original stock as possible! Don't junk it up by "lowering" it and doing other stupid shit like that to this awesome car! You can tell from the all the chrome and what that jazzy interior use to be, that this Pontiac was a pretty unique car at one time. My Dad got hold of a 1948 Chevrolet coupe back in 1969, and it wasn't even close to being as classy as your Pontiac is. I've suscribed, and will be looking forward to you next video. Thank you!

Thanks for subscribing, I really appreciate you taking time to watch, it means a lot to me. And YES!!! We're keeping it original. But be forewarned, it's not gonna be pretty at first! I have to drive it, it's killing me not to right now. I'm getting some wheels and tires figured out, brakes optional, then at a minimum, drive it down the road a bit!!!!

I just looked up what dejected meant.... Glad I did and thanks for the comment! I don't talk about it much but saving old cars and working on stuff people gave up on is my way of dealing with "dejection" and stuff that I still hold on to since my fightin' in Iraq days. I know I know, one look at this rugged manly body you'd never have guessed! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy the videos!!!!

Awesome find! In my early teens a local photographer had one of these in black sitting in a gravel driveway. Never saw it move, and it deteriorated over time and eventually must have been towed away. Save what you can!

You have a 6 volt electrical system, you can use 12 volt battery to start the engine for first time, don’t use 12 volt on your lights and gauges . They make a 8 volt battery which has more cracking power than 6 volt battery. I used to own 1941 Pontiac business couple, flat head six, 3 speed on the column . Ran very well after getting it started first time in 30 plus years. My floor boards were gone as welll. You have to make a wire harness which would be better than the old cloth covered wire , the cloth falls off leaving bear wires. You have a very nice car worth fixing.

I owned 51 Chiefton . Flat head strait eight. You could stand a screw driver on the head while running..transmission likes to play a tune going up hill. Cool car you got. I think i seen a turbo mounted to one of these engines. He on you tube. Cool car. Upgrade your brakes. Good luck..new Sub looking from Greece..

The Ivory Knob to the right of the emergency / parking brake level is the hood release. I was heavy into these old Pontiacs back in the 70's & early 80's. My first car was a 1950 4dr Streamliner 8 with hyradmatic trans. I got it from my great aunt in 1968.

Was the 8 a dog? Did you like it? Im really looking forward to running it but I don't have high hopes for it
@auburnfolsom
@auburnfolsom 8 ай бұрын
@@route40rust Depending on what you consider a dog, it's hard to say. They only had a little over 100hp. By today's vehicle standards, I guess it would be considered a dog. Like my uncle who was a mechanic back in the era when those cars were new & common everyday transportation used to say, "they were a good engine in their day". They're about like old gasoline tractor engines. So if you're looking for modern day vehicle performance, you'd be better off installing at later model Pontiac V8 or an LS with a like era transmission. That was Pontiac's first year for the 4-speed Hydramatic trans too. The first drive position (next to reverse) were 1st & 2nd gear. The second position to the left allowed for 3rd & 4th. In the first position the car would only go as high as 2nd gear. In the second position it would start in 1st & shift all the way to 4th. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. I enjoyed driving the old Pontiacs with their original running gear, but I didn't have a need for speed with them. I had a '38 Pontiac 6 that I totally restored back in the mid 70's & with that car I often wished I converted it to a Pontiac V8 (389, 400, 428 or 455) with a turbo 400 trans.
@route40rust
@route40rust 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the information. I'm not looking for modern performance by any stretch, I have a 53 Willys with it's L134 engine and a 1957 Ford Powermaster Tractor. 72 hp and 63 hp respectively, but it's manageable with gear reduction. Obviously I've never driven a straight 8 and perhaps so eager to know what they're like, again not expecting much with 100hp and 6.5:1 compression. An old timer in town told me they made a high compression 8 if there is any truth to it
@auburnfolsom
@auburnfolsom 8 ай бұрын
@@route40rust Then you should be satisfied with the straight 8's performance. I believe the high compression head was first offered in 1938. It was Pontiac's attempt at trying to keep up with the OHV V-8's that were becoming more prevalent by then. As I recall, it didn't up the hp by much. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4aZpHuDf9-kZ5Y kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5SlZq2ViK5mh9E

As bad as it looks its still a good find. I may have to start my own channel since I have about 20 cars. I am a junkie. I am retired military and was stationed all over the US and overseas. I have been junk yard hopping for many years. I have seen lots of cars that got crushed that would be worth a fortune today.

great-looking car. I think I'd roll an S10 chassis under it and keep the rest of the car as stock as possible (except for 12V, electronic ignition, alternator, OD trans upgrades)
@route40rust

Chassis swap is always an option if this frame ends up getting worse and worse. My reservation about frame swaps or even major suspension upgrades, often an improvement, takes away from what driving a certain car actually feels like, if that makes any sense lol.

@route40rust, That sticker in the Windshield is a "Annual Safety Inspection" sticker. The "5" represents the "Month" and the punched "1979" represents the last Year that the "Car" was inspected for and considered to be "Safe" for operation on Indiana Roads. That used to be an Indiana Law that ended in the mid 1980's I think. I could be wrong on the "end" date.. New Sub here. I know the last time I had my 1963 Ford "Inspected" was in 1980. Didn't drive Her on the Road till 2015, and by then, that Indiana Law had been done away with. Those Straight 8's were very "Smooth" runners. I live in Indianapolis, used to have a place on the Ohio River in Vevay, IN. Nice find!!! Will be looking forward to the next Video's regarding this awesome find!!! And you are right about this bitter cold, but luckily, I have been in Daytona Beach, FL since Dec. 30th and not returning to Indianapolis till mid February. I am hoping to miss most of the cold weather.... Be Safe and God's Speed!!!!

Thank you for all the information. I find it impressive the car was inspected and deemed roadworthy into the late 70's. Just another piece to the puzzle of understanding the cars history! I am looking forward to getting the 8 running, you're the second to comment on how smooth they ran. I have such confidence in the engines future I picked up a GM one wire alternator today and as this weather continues to keep me in the shop, I can swap the pulleys over. Thanks for watching and above all THANK YOU for sharing and commenting, it's very helpful! P.S. enjoy Florida you lucky son of a gun

Trim may be hard to find unless you find like car in junk yard. All the trim you need will be Stn stl so if you find it in junk yard it should still be in good condition. I have two ‘48 Pontiacs. Both are 2door with straight 8 engines and hydramatics.

Very smooth running. Mine has about 36,000 miles. Had to do valves once. Biggest thing I have trouble with is keeping the points set properly and clean. Mine are set much closer than book specs. I use a dwell to get them right.

Well you have your work cut out for you. You may have to find another frame. Pontiacs and Olds used a lot of the same stuff. I have a 48 Delux like this with tons of extra parts. At my age I would not tackle a car like this. My 48 is almost done with tons of NOS parts, paint and all new glass. I also have a 48 olds with 39k original miles and garage kept since new. Mine is oyster gray top and mariner blue lower. I have had a 47,47 and 48 pont

Cool car, asPontiacs shared some of the same basic parts as a Chevrolet. You may find many parts you can use out of a 46-8 Chevrolet. Some body mounts are different and will have to be fabricated. Front fenders are roughly 6 in longer than a Chevy. Glass is the same.
