I get this kind of email over and over and over... Subject: That darn CIS 2640 class!!! Hello Sime, I'm one of your former students I just graduated in August and I just wanted to let you know I just got hired at a company called Topco. They're a privately member-owned large distribution center and I will be doing supply chain analysis for them. Just wanted to make sure you keep encouraging ISM students to take CIS 2640 if it wasn't for that class I would not have got the job. Thanks for everything you're doing for the program and I hope you have a great day! Neil xxxxx ****************************************************** Another one... Hi Sime, I wanted to reach out to let you know that I have received a couple job offers! One that I really am leaning toward taking is a Inventory Analyst role with xxxxx in Minneapolis. They have offered me $58,000 a year and $3,000 to help me relocate. I think it is a great offer but do you think I should negotiate the pay at all? Also for any ISM students thinking about the business analytics minor please stress to them the importance of it. In every interview I have had they are very impressed with it and really want new hires to be comfortable with Excel. For xxxx they told me it was one of the things that helped me stand out against other candidates and they think it will help me be able to do anything within the position. Thank you! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx *************************************************************** Another one... Hello Dr. Chen, I would like to thank you for a wonderful semester! I learned a great amount and its already transitioning into the business world! I just got done with a Skype call with Steelcase that was strictly focused on excel skills you taught me this year! Its exciting to see such a quick turnaround and application of the knowledge from your class! I hope that the rest of finals week goes well, and that you have a relaxing summer! Regards and Bronco Pride, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ************************************************************** Another one...this was an article on the HCOB website...it made Nathan famous... Gamifying Travel at Intuit Supply chain professionals, expert at improving processes and reducing costs, fill roles in a variety of areas leading and supporting initiatives that help the bottom line. As a new analyst at business and financial software giant Intuit, Nathan Henckel, B.B.A.’17, teamed up with three other Intuit employees to pitch a way to reduce employee travel costs that would benefit both the company and the employee. The team created a gamification process where employees earn rewards with the “Price to Beat” plan. “In order to pitch a program like this, we had to the have the data and a program to back our idea,” says Henckel. “This was my part of the project. I created an algorithm using Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications programing language that analyzes Intuit’s historic and real-time travel data and generates a price to beat for the specific route the user was seeking.” Using the company’s travel booking system, employees can “Beat the Price” generated by Henckel’s algorithm and receive half of any savings in their next paycheck. In order to deploy a program where Intuit provides cash incentives to employees, the group presented their invention and explained the algorithm to Intuit’s chief marketing officer. “Following our presentation, he advocated to senior management for the deployment of this program as a pilot to approximately 1,000 intuit employees,” says Henckel, who credits his time in the Haworth College of Business with sharpening his knowledge of data analytics as well as his communication skills so that he could effectively present information and data about the project in a way that is meaningful. “The business analytics skills and effective communication techniques I learned as a WMU student are put to use every day,” says Henckel. “As a sourcing analyst, my day-to-day responsibilities include deriving insights from data and effectively communicating those insights to our leaders. While a student at WMU, I took multiple courses that prepared me for the role that I am in now.” To date, the travel game has generated $40,000 in savings and has been received very well by Intuit employees. “The primary goal of this project and pilot was to show savings for the company as a result of the incentive based travel program, and we accomplished that.” The team is now looking at expanding the pilot. Excited about his position at Intuit and the opportunity to develop his skills for the future, Henckel anticipates his chosen field will change often. “In today’s world, more and more roles and tasks are being completed programmatically and with artificial intelligence and machine learning,” he says. “As a result, the roles of traditional sourcing professionals and analysts could be quickly changing directions. At Intuit, we employ the top software engineers in the world, which makes it the perfect place to further develop skills such as Python and other programming languages. I have already seen my skills pay off with the creation of our travel gamification algorithm using visual basic.” Henckel’s path to Intuit began as a sophomore student participating in the introductory integrated supply management course taught by Dr. Sime Curkovic, professor of management. “I think back to that course and how much passion and thought went into that class,” says Henckel. “After being exposed to the excitement and rigor of the course and the ISM program, I knew this was the field I wanted to pursue.” Henckel went on to participate in the ISM program’s Bronco Force initiative where he helped develop a scorecard for a manufacturing firm in southwest Michigan. “This hands on experience, as well as the fact that students earned a LSS Green Belt as part of Bronco Force, helped me land my first summer internship at Brunswick Corporation in Chicago.” As an indirect sourcing co-op at Brunswick, Henckel performed heavy data analytics and assisted in corporate travel and ocean freight bids. He later landed a co-op with GAST Manufacturing “where I finally got to put the manufacturing engineering knowledge ISM students gain to good use. This experience was substantial for developing my business acumen in a fast-paced setting and honed my ability to effectively communicate and negotiate.” When Henckel was approaching graduation, Curkovic talked about the business and culture of Intuit, and Henckel was intrigued. After some research, he applied for a position in San Diego. After several phone interviews, he was invited to a case interview, and the next day had the job. “The opportunity to move out to San Diego and work for such a progressive company was a career-defining move, and I couldn’t have done it without Western’s ISM program,” adds Henckel. ************************ One more... Dr. xxxxxx- Following up on our conversation from earlier, I wanted to say again how much CIS 2640 has already helped me with my career. I took the class this past spring with Dan Miller, and the timing could not have worked out any better. I went right into a summer internship at xxxxx Systems (a third party logistics provider) as a logistics analyst intern. My excel skills coming out of CIS 1020 were rudimentary, and I would have struggled if that had been my only excel experience. With 2640, I was able to immediately begin cost savings analysis of freight pay data by using pivot tables, vlookups (I’m excited to begin using xlookups), index match, paste values, text formulas and other general excel workflow best practices that are taught. I spent a lot of my time this summer cleaning data, and the industry experience stacked really well on top of the classroom experience to help me use my time as efficiently as possible. The curriculum was spot on. I can’t imagine not taking this class, as it would be much more difficult to stand out in interviews and the workplace. I recommend the Business Analytics minor to everyone I know because of it. This semester I am tutoring for 2640 at the Dallas Rauker Center, and feel very confident after my combination of classroom success and workplace application. I’d appreciate if you could let the CIS team know that in my opinion, the content is spot on, and that we should to as much as we can to offer the class to as many students as possible. Best, xxxxxxx Western Michigan University Integrated Supply Management | May 2021

My first SCM job was very tactical and has been replaced by technology and automation. Over half of our SCM students also minor in Business Analytics (e.g., big data/analytics, database management, data mining, project management, SQL, Python, PMO, Tableau, Power BI). We try to not only teach them how to use the technology, but also create the technology. Also, we gradually shifted our curriculum towards developing strategic skill sets (rather than tactical) combined with soft skills (i.e., problem solving, leadership, negotiation, project management, etc.). Others include: 1) Gather and organize information about the problem to be solved or the procedure to be improved. 2) Interview personnel and conduct onsite observations to determine the methods, equipment, and personnel that will be needed. 3) Analyze financial and other data, including revenue, expenditure, and employment reports. 4) Develop solutions or alternative practices. 5) Recommend new systems, procedures, or organizational changes 6) Make recommendations to management through presentations or written reports. 7) Confer with managers to ensure changes are working. So, future SCM managers will need to become consultants to their own organization. They in essence will evolve into management analysts in a niche area (SCM), but they will also need a strong general business acumen. Note, employment of management analysts is projected to grow 14 percent from 2020 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. The average growth rate for all occupations is 5 percent. Demand for the services of these workers should grow as organizations continue to seek ways to improve efficiency and control costs (SCM centered, not always, but often enough to justify majoring in it). The median annual wage for these types of skill sets was $83,610 in 2018. The median annual wage for all workers was $38,640. Point very well taken though, use/create the technology to do your job better or the technology will take your job. Thank you.

From Professor Sime: If I was 25 and just came off of a job rotation in a full time role, I would start thinking about a graduate degree (assuming I had an undergrad degree in SCM with already a strong data analytics foundation via a Business Analytics minor). Of course, do what is rewarded in the culture of your organization. Look at your boss’s resume and your boss’ boss’ resume. In general, I would not do a general MBA or even an MBA with a general SCM concentration. I like certifications associated with ISM, APICS/ASCM, CSCMP, etc., but I suspect that I would not actually learn much from the process of getting certified. These certs however would externally validate me a SCM subject matter expert and that is worth a lot in industry. However, I would get a graduate degree in something that is quicker than the traditional 12 classes (i.e., a mini MBA or MS degree). I would also get it in something I am weak in and is likely to be important. So as of 2021, what would I do? I would do something like a mini MBA (9 classes, not 12) at Rutgers (high profile SCM school, great brand) in “Digital” Supply Chain Management. Note, their mini MBA has an entire course dedicated to SCM Finance. Good luck climbing up the corporate ladder if you cannot talk to your CFO. I like SCM Finance so much, I encourage my students to get a graduate degree in Finance if they already have world class technology skills. The “Digital” transformation is getting VERY popular these days. We have heard of Industry 4.0, but in reality it is Supply Chain 4.0, because nothing happens without the supply chain HEAVILY involved. For digitization to work, manual processes have to be digitized/automated and eventually analyzed. That is what companies are doing right now. Converting manual to digitized versions requires someone with a good knowledge on systems analysis and design, data storage and information retrieval. These are the topics usually covered in IT/CIS/CS majors. A lot of companies have gone past this stage, but they are facing the next problem - data analysis. Data are collected, but no one knows what to do with it. That’s where our Business Analytics minor comes in as an undergrad. If you lack these skills, go get your MS in Data Analytics before you miss the boat. These skills would include: big data/analytics, database management, data mining, project management, SQL, Python, PMO, Tableau, Power BI, etc. Fortunately, most of my undergrads walk away with these skills. Just like AI, the boundaries of what is and what is not Industry 4.0 (supply chain 4.0, digital transformation, digitized supply chain, etc.) is quite blurry. These days any product with even a tiny element of AI/ML is claimed to be an AI product. As a new field like supply chain digitization evolves, people are still trying to figure out the essential components that characterize it. This is the reason that people offer certificates in digital supply chain in all kinds of flavor. For example, Rutgers takes a high-level managerial approach, Missouri S&T takes an ERP+BI+PM approach, and NUS takes an analytics+strategic planning approach. One issue with the mini MBA in the Digital Supply Chain at Rutgers is not their high level managerial approach per se, but perhaps the usefulness on what they predict will be super useful. They could be wrong for example on dedicating an entire course to Robotic Process Automation. This reminds me a lot about the Business Process Reengineering or Business Process Automation course that people used to offer years ago. On RPA for example,… • Will there be a continuous or frequent demand for RPA at a company? • Will new RPA need to be created or existing RPA need to be tuned often? • What kind of robots are involved? Consumer robots, manufacturing robots, or a mixture of both? • Will the course need to teach realistic applications or BPR? What technologies? What kind of robots and for what purpose? If the answer is no and no to the first two questions, the skills will likely be taught and then forgotten. This is not to say that there is no environment that needs a constant or frequent RPA design and tuning, but I wonder what kind of environment that would be and how much a company would sustain doing that for long. If the RPA is done once in a few years for example, I am not sure of the utility/usefulness of such a graduate course other than showing people that they are teaching leading-edge topics. In conclusion, get a graduate degree because the data says it will make you more successful (in general). I would do it in something that you are bad at and will be very important. SCM Finance will always be important. In the near term, Industry 4.0, Supply Chain 4.0, and Supply Chain Digitization will transform SCM orgs and the skill sets required of them.

WMU ISM compared to other programs: The ISM Program’s curriculum is unique. There are more supply management courses in WMU’s ISM major than other well-known programs: WMU ISM Program Major Credit Hours Integrated Supply Management, WMU 43 (twice as many classes compared to other programs)… Supply Chain Management, Arizona State University 21 Supply Chain Management, Michigan State University 18 Supply Chain Management, Penn State University 24 Supply Chain Management, University of Texas, Austin 21 This gives ISM graduates a significant advantage in the job market and the workplace. Background on the WMU ISM Programs: The integrated supply management major was launched in September 1992. Developed initially by two faculty members from the Haworth College of Business and one from the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the curriculum design was based on an extensive study. Industry professionals from over 30 corporations took the lead in defining the curriculum since they would be hiring the “products.” Participants helped pair existing courses with three new courses created specifically for the major. WMU’s ISM program has continued to grow since the first two ISM students graduated in the spring of 1993. Today, over 100 students graduate from the program annually. These graduates are “job ready” day one, often for positions above entry level. Many students begin their senior year with multiple job offers in hand. The unique curriculum of the ISM program is the result of integrating supply chain, information technology, continuous improvement and engineering curriculum from five departments across two colleges. Curriculum includes 13 supply-chain-specific courses (43 credits)-more than other well-known programs. Required courses include one dedicated to learning ERP systems and processes by using SAP. All students take Try-Z, an intensive, three-day capstone course in which student teams use Deming’s Plan-Do-Act management cycle. ISM majors are required to obtain professional work experience, such as internships, prior to graduation. Students have an opportunity to obtain a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt by completing an industry project using DMAIC. As of 2019, close to half of ISM majors are Business Analytics Minors (e.g., big data/analytics, database management, data mining, project management, etc.)

Subject: Read: Yes, delay graduation for work experience (it is a deal breaker)! Students: Most good paying jobs are highly specialized (e.g., purchasing, operations, and logistics). Your degrees are highly specialized but you also have to get good practical work experience related to what you are majoring in. Quite simply, students without work experience in their major do not get good jobs in their major. That means you have to make getting an internship one of your top priorities while in school. You have to do this even if it means delaying graduation. The delay will pay for itself in terms of starting salary and future advancement opportunities (because of what you learned during the internship and what you brought into your full-time job because of the internship). Pasted below is some feedback from a manager that thinks WMU students are less inclined to delay graduation for great work experience. I think his points are somewhat exaggerated, but I just wanted to reiterate the importance of getting work experience related to what you are majoring in. I am currently working with a handful of WMU ISM graduates that are unemployed. What do they have in common? Low GPAs and no work experience. Again, please know that I am not judging. I just want the very best for you. Thank you. Sime *************************** ISM Students (here is an email from a manager): As a bit of feedback, we always seem to have trouble convincing students from WMU that taking a semester off school and working for a large company is "okay". They tend to want to stay in school straight through and graduate in 4 yrs. In my opinion, times have changed, and a student absolutely needs to have some co-op work experience on their resume in order to land a good job in the area of Supply Chain. A summer internship (around 3 months) is just not enough anymore, and more and more companies are moving away from programs like that, and moving to full-semester type co-op positions. I am not certain what WMU's position is on students taking a semester off to relocate and complete a full semester co-op term. Do you have conversations with students about that topic? We primarily work with Bowling Green State Univ.'s Supply Chain program. They seem to help convince students to take a semester off, as the experience gained cannot be matched. This way, when students are interviewing, they are already expecting to take a semester off. Sometimes, at WMU, students seem shocked and uncomfortable about taking that semester off. All in all, we have still had some great co-ops from WMU, and we will continue to look to fill our positions with WMU students. Do you agree? Thank you. Sime

Anaconda + Jupyter Notebook + Python + visualization libraries Business Analytics, > 1/2 of our Supply Chain majors are BA minors, why? lnkd.in/eqiqSMRb The following CIS courses in BA minor:: CIS 1020 (Business Computing), CIS 2640 (Business Analysis & Reporting), CIS 2650 (Programming for Data Analytics), CIS 3640 (Business Analytics), & CIS 4640 (Business Data Mining). First, CIS 2650 is not just a “Python” class, but instead a Python class for analytics (big difference). In a traditional Python class, people teach Python straight for the whole semester with tons of syntax, data structure, software development, etc. That type of class is mostly designed for CIS majors. What we do is different. It is Python in a popular analytics platform (more technically speaking, it is Python in Jupyter, which is an analytics platform that data science & business analytics programs do). You will be glad to hear that (Anaconda+Jupyter Notebook+Python+visualization libraries) is what we have been teaching in CIS 2650 since the course was created. We have no plan to change it unless industry tells us otherwise. Agreed? The reason for this design is the following: · We studied the top skills in analytics jobs & Python was among the top skills. lnkd.in/e6r8_KBy lnkd.in/e7xyUYGs · The visualization libraries in Python can produce the kind of visualizations not available in Tableau & Power BI. Students will be able to differentiate themselves from other schools. · Tableau & Power BI recently added Python or Python+Jupyter because certain Python analytics & visualization are not available in Tableau and Power BI. Using them together makes it a powerful analytics solution (e.g., the ability to transform visualization into implementable actions). Here are some examples: TabPy makes it possible to use Python scripts in Tableau calculated fields.: lnkd.in/eF67p-Jp PyCaret makes it possible to use machine learning in Tableau: lnkd.in/ebA9f3EH Python can create machine learning modules and create the visualization based on the predicated result. lnkd.in/esFizKPA lnkd.in/etTtk74H · All data scientists stress the importance of Python in analytics programs. Note, “data scientist” is one of the fastest growing career paths w/ escalating salaries because not enough people are good at this stuff. lnkd.in/e_22MKuC · Python are “R” are both number one & two in analytics, but Python is easier to learn compared to R. · Past experience in our SCM program shows that non-technical students are able to handle the content that we designed. · Python + Jupyter (or its variant) are used in Big Data (Hadoop, Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, etc.). It can also be used with/on SAP HANA, IoT, AI, Blockchain, & smart contracts to implement supply chain visibility, & other SC related solutions. lnkd.in/e4rmEJqF lnkd.in/e6Rmzpw

Dear Students: I met with several managers at last year's career fair and I made the following observations. 1. Global skills are critical. For example, have you traveled and/or studied abroad? Do you speak a foreign language? Spring break in Mexico does not count. Do you have a passport or are you dumping that burden on a future employer? Paperwork for international students can be cumbersome, but it is worthwhile if the American pool is thin on global skills. Do you know how to schedule a flight? If your flight gets cancelled, do you know how to reschedule? Do you know which countries are in the European Union but not in the European Monetary Union? Do you know what the name of China's currency is? Stuff like that really resonates with managers. 2. Good employers with good jobs will make you take a drug test. They use a combination of urine and hair samples. Expect it for a full-time position, and do not be surprised for an internship. Your brain on drugs = unemployed. Once we had three students fail their drug test with the same company in the same month. Uggghhhhh. 3. Great employers with great jobs want a 3.0 GPA and above. There are jobs for students with under a 3.0 but the salary difference appears to be $10,000 (20%). You can add another $5,000-$10,000 in benefits lost also. Hi Sime, It isn't that the Word templates are bad - we have just found that students sometimes don't take the time to really customize them and fit them to their needs. Basically if the employer knows it is a Word template and it isn't personalized the resume can seem canned and unoriginal. However, the templates could be a good launching point if they are really struggling with a format/template for their resume. Here is the section of our website on resumes: www.wmich.edu/business/career/resume Resumes | Haworth College of Business | Western Michigan ... www.wmich.edu Your resume is a critical document for your professional success, as it communicates your education, skills and experience. Keep your resume up-to-date by reviewing ... I love the keywords/buzzwords document - it helps student with not sounding so redundant (i.e. hard-working and motivated - we see those words WAY too much)! Also, here is our Career Development Guide that has some great examples: wmich.edu/sites/default/files/attachments/u91/2018/2018-20%20Career%20Development%20Guide-for-web.pdf WMU Career Development Guide - wmich.edu wmich.edu Shorten your ETA and accelerate your career in about 18 months’ time. As a quali˜ed candidate in our United Career Path Program, you’ll get trained, instruct others, and we’ll help you reach your 1,500 If all else fails, he can just Google templates/formats that he likes. He may have to create the template from scratch, but it is really a preference - there is no "right" or "wrong" per se. I have heard the new templates are easier to work with, but I remember when I toyed with the Word resumes templates they were hard to navigate and adjust/edit. Basically, it is not wrong - the content is the most important part. Customize, don't use canned or generic terms/jargon, use examples, and quantify :) Bottom line: You don't have to use the word templates. I would create the resume in Word and then save it as a PDF. Hope this helps! Cheers, Alaina Alaina Parker Tuohy, MPM | Employer Relations Specialist Zhang Career Center, Haworth College of Business Western Michigan University

Dream Jobs: Six-Figure Salaries and a Bright Future by Louise Tutelian Seemingly every week, another publication or website comes out with its list of the "Best Jobs of the Year" or the "Hottest Careers," purporting to show the best fields to get into for job stability and earnings potential. The problem with many of these lists is that the jobs and careers on them often require years and years of training (see: biomedical engineer), offer an extremely small overall pool of jobs (see: meteorologist), or really don't pay all that well (see: home health aide). So we've put together a list of jobs that suffer from none of these disadvantages. Using statistics from the Bureau of Labor, salary sites, professional trade groups, and recruiters, we identified jobs that don't require more than two years of additional training to secure a position, have a reasonably large and growing number of overall jobs, and offer six-figure salaries to top earners in the field (generally, the top 10 percent of those employed). These, to our mind, are the true dream jobs. Global Supply Chain Manager!!!!! Salary for top earners: $135,100 Projected job growth: 10 percent by 2020 Additional training required: Transitioning into this field could take between six months for courses and up to two years to get a master's degree. Those with operations, purchasing, or logistics education and/or experience have the best chance of getting into this field. Global supply chain managers are the unsung heroes of companies who have to get products from A to B, on time, and on budget -- and now across continents and time zones as well. The job calls for calm problem-solving ability, high-tech handiness, and diplomatic skill -- a triple threat that's hard to find. According to industry analysts, there is a growing shortage of these specialists as companies streamline and speed up every link in the chain to stay competitive. More info... Notice what happens to salaries as you get certified and get a graduate degree... Careers in Purchasing and Supply Management Average Salaries (this is actually a few years old so the current numbers are even bigger) The Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) surveyed supply management professionals during January and February to determine average salaries in the supply management profession. This report presents summary results of the survey that is based upon salaries earned during the calendar year. A full report is available to ISM members in the Online Career Center. Some of the key result are listed here. Keep in mind that there are a variety of factors that determine the actual salary you may earn. Salaries vary based on such issues as business climate, work experience, industry, education, certification status, personal ambition, cost of living, and organization budget. Overall average for supply management profession $102,218 Average for those with five or fewer years of experience $ 69,350 (average for WMU ISM graduate is around $60K) 1. Average for those with BS/BA in business $ 99,490 2. Average for those with one or more credentials $102,498 3. Average for those with a Master's degree $123,090 Do you understand why the salaries got bigger in each line above? I am curious, what are your salary expectations during your career? I want some numbers please. Thank you. Sime

Hello Students: Students should not change their official GPA for their resume. Instead, I recommend they calculate their GPA using the courses required (that counted toward) their major and also list their overall GPA. Also, a 2.96 GPA is not a 3.00 GPA. Then, they can list two GPAs on their resume: EDUCATION Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI Bachelor of Business Administration GPA: 2.96 Major: Integrated Supply Management GPA in Major: 3.?? Minor: General Business If an employer requests an official transcript be sent upon graduation, this could be labeled as "falsification of employment record" and as a result, an offer of employment can be revoked (if you round up your GPA). This has happened to a student who accepted employment with a bank. Because the bank's employment policy required a GPA of 3.0 or above, when they verified that the student graduated with less than a 3.0 and found that the student falsified a document during the employment process (resume), the offer was reneged. They said if the student would have disclosed the truth, they may have re-considered. But, they felt strongly they didn't want a banker who figured that number was "close enough." Thank you. Sime

Students: This is a deal breaker in your professional lives... The following CIS courses develop your Business Analytic skills: CIS 1020 (Business Computing), CIS 2640 (Business Analysis and Reporting), CIS 2650 (Programming for Data Analytics), CIS 3640 (Business Analytics), and CIS 4640 (Business Data Mining). The trend line is very positive for this skill set. Business Analytics (BA) addresses an increasing demand in organizations of all types to understand data related to their operations. Investments in information systems throughout the enterprise for the last 10-25 years are generating tremendous amounts of data, and companies will spend at least the next 10 years developing processes that generate insight from those data. In addition to data generated internally, many companies are exploring the effects of external data, primarily present in social media or web search. The ability to manage data and conduct business projects are the key to success in many disciplines. BA will provide a comprehensive skill set for students to analyze, visualize and report data. The BIS and ISM programs have industry advisory boards supporting this skill set. Attached is information that shows the importance of BA skills to employers. Here is my thought on the BA minor and how to sell CIS 2650 to employers... First of all, CIS 2650 is not just a "Python" class, but instead a Python class for analytics (big difference). In a traditional Python class, people teach Python straight for the whole semester with tons of syntax, data structure, software development, etc. That type of class is mostly designed for CIS and CS majors. What we do is different. It is Python in a popular analytics platform (more technically speaking, it is Python in Jupyter, which is an analytics platform that data science and business analytics programs do). Can you imagine what an employer will think if they see Python in Jupyter on your resume? The reason for this design is the following: We studied the top skills in analytics jobs and Python was among the top skills. The visualization libraries in Python can produce the kind of visualizations not available in Tableau and Power BI. Students will be able to differentiate themselves from other schools. This will be huge in the next Gartner Top 20 Undergrad SCM program rankings. We are ahead of the curve, but only slightly (Penn State is right there with us on this stuff). Tableau and Power BI recently added Python or Python+Jupyter because certain Python analytics and visualization are not available in Tableau and Power BI. Using them together makes it a powerful analytics solution (e.g., the ability to transform visualization into implementable actions). All data scientists stress the importance of Python in analytics programs. Note, "data scientist" is one of the fastest growing career paths with escalating salaries because not enough people are good at this stuff. Python are "R" are both number one and two in analytics, but Python is easier to learn compared to R. Past experience in the ISM program (3+ semesters of experience in CIS 2650) shows that non-technical students (ISM, marketing, accounting, etc.) are able to handle the content that we designed. Python + Jupyter (or its variant) are used in Big Data (Hadoop, Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, etc.). It can also be used with/on SAP HANA, IoT, AI, Blockchain, and smart contracts to implement supply chain visibility, and other SC related solutions, etc. Meeting the needs of today's employers is important, but offering a program that does that plus something that can differentiate our students from other schools sounds even better. Compared to the analytics programs from the schools that we benchmarked, our students can do so much more. By the way, CIS 2650 has been in the minor for several semesters now. Have you had CIS 2650 yet? If so, what was your experience?

Hey Sime. As a high school senior deciding where to apply and choosing whether I should do CS or SCM and logistics as a major has been a big thing for me right now. If you have the time to reply to my questions please do as it would be really helpful. My first question is getting a BS in SCM to get a good job as an intern with good pay enough or would I need to pursue for a Masters? Is the demand for this major at high or at a strong projected growth in the coming years especially with Covid-19 in the USA and Canada? Is a degree in SCM allow me to work in different industries like Helthcare, Automotive, IT and etc? Do I have a good shot of getting a job globally? Do you know of any good Unjversities that have a good programs for SCM? Please let me know as it would be very helpful your lectures from your previous videos have been fantastic!

ASCM/APICS now has a Supply Chain Technology Certificate, $495, 20 hrs of online training (hmm). Topics covered: Blockchain, Adv Analytics & Automation, Internet of Things, Cybersecurity, Demand Planning Technologies, & Additive Mfg (3D Printing). This covers a LOT of ground in 20 hrs. lnkd.in/gbrJJa9v. For example, see their Adv Analytics & Automation…Objectives: 1. Define adv analytics & automation. 2. Compare & contrast descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive, & cognitive analytics. 3. Explain the process of data mining & challenges the process can present to a company. 4. Discuss data storage options & cloud computing security concerns. 5. Describe how AI & ML are used in SCM. 6. List some of the skills employees need to work w/ adv analytics & automation. Our Supply Chain students minor in Data Analytics by learning: 1. Advanced Excel (power query & pivot) & macros; 2. Data visualization (Tableau, Power BI & python w/ seaborn & matplotlib); 3. Data mining/RapidMiner, machine learning & data science; 4. Python & Jupyter notebook (data analytics & statistical libraries such as pandas, numpy); 5. Relational data models (Excel data model); 6. Graphic & statistical libraries (Seaborn, Matplotlib, Pandas, & Plotly). lnkd.in/guvjPb_V These analytics skill sets require our SCM students to take an additional 4 classes (so > 500 hrs of class & study time). Also, we teach it face to face because they learn this stuff best via hand holding (not online as we learned during the covid era). Note, the lack of interactivity & support at Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) usually causes a super low retention rate (9% - 16%). I hope the ASCM certificate addresses that many hiring managers do not have a full understanding of the AI skill sets associated w/ a data analytics education. Our SCM students told us many times that their hiring managers valued only the traditional Excel capabilities (lookup functions, pivot tables, etc. - that is NOT AI), & they greatly overlooked the opportunities from other analytical solutions (skill sets that our students & many employees have). This makes it a bit difficult to sell the analytical techniques that go beyond super advanced Excel, which would be our CIS 2640 class (Excel on steroids) - Applied Analytics Foundations. For example, our data mining class is essentially a machine learning class for business, which is the core of AI. The course is designed to solve the problems that Excel falls short on. Hopefully we do a better job of training our students to “sell” the AI skills & managers (SCM Leaders) become more open to embracing the benefits (which might require a culture change). I hope this ASCM cert helps close that gap. Note, I do not see Python in the ASCM cert. Is Python a must-have skill in the supply chain? lnkd.in/dcEJuZJX. There is a development goal within the company’s purchasing organization to have 100% of the purchasing team pass all three modules of the ISM CPM certification. To date about 50 team members are certified, with 80 awaiting results. Note: Major new change to APICS CPIM certification (you can start this one while still in school or I would start this one right after college)… Good Afternoon Sime, The CPIM certification program is in a transition from a 5 module certification process to a 2 part process. The first part be will be very similar to our current module 1 but will have more questions on the exam and be significantly more expensive. The remaining 4 modules will be combined with the overlap between them removed. The cost for this second part will be more than each of the individual modules today, but less than the combined 4 modules. If a person passes Module 1 under the current program it meets the requirements for part 1 under the new process. We are planning for our 2017-2018 program season now, so classes aren’t finalized. I suspect we will offer a Module 1 class this fall to allow persons to take Module 1 and pass the exam under the current less expensive option. Part 2 would likely be offered early in 2018 and passing that exam along with Module 1 would meet the certification requirements. We will publish the information on our website apicsswmi.com/index.php as it is finalized, but would be happy to e-mail the individuals you referenced with details if you can provide contact info. Thank you for your continued support, we appreciate it. Dave David L. Rench Jr. President SW Michigan Chapter- APICS

Technology skills are a great way to get into SCM... Do you know how to use Power BI or Tableau? Do not be a victim of technology. WMU ISM students learn: big data/predictive analytics, database management, data mining, project management, SQL, Python, PMO, Tableau, Power BI, etc. Visualization is big. Kellogg's is the largest user of Tableau in Michigan and Tableau is owned by Salesforce. Salesforce is huge and is worth $220B. PowerBI is owned by Microsoft which is even huger than Salesforce and MSFT is worth almost $2,000,000,000,000 - that is $2 Trillion. PowerBI (MSFT) is playing catch-up but making significant strides. Tableau is the real deal. But so is Power BI. Students ask me which one will prevail in the market place? I have no idea but would you bet against a $2T company? Based on what I have seen, they both might be long term players in this space. Our CIS 3640 class has added Tableau and/or Power BI. I had a student with a Technology Skills section on her resume. She (Business Analytics minor) listed all the things she learned in all her ISM and BA courses. During an interview, an employer asked her, do you really know how to do all this stuff? I would love to be asked that! As of today, what would a Technology Skills section on your resume look like?

Subject: Read: How to set up the post script on your smart phones for email replies Students: I am noticing that several of you are responding to my emails via your smart phones. That is great and fine. It is 2020 and your future employer will expect you to do the same. However, it can be cumbersome to write emails on your phone that are clean and easy to read. And sometimes, you try to write one word but another word appears that was not intended. So, please take the time to make sure your reply message looks professional and reflects positively on you. Impressions will be made based on your written communication and you will be judged. I would also recommend programming your phone so that the post script tells the recipient of your message that it was sent from your smart phone. That way people will be less judgmental if a mistake was made. Here are some instructional tips on how to do so: You can add the message in your iPhone settings so that it will appear on all emails sent by phone but not on your email signatures sent by computer. Directions: Go to "settings" Then find "Mail, contacts, calendars" Scroll down until you find the "signature" field. Once you select the signature field it will let you manually type in what you want the signature to read. You can also choose if you want it for one account, like gmail, or all accounts on your phone. See attached images. An appropriate post script message from your phone would be: “Note: this email was sent by iPhone, please forgive grammatical errors. “ Thank you. You know me, just trying to protect you in every way from making costly professional mistakes. Please take it with that supportive spirit. Sime

Subject: FYI: What do ISM internships pay (and they all pay, never work for free)? The going rate is $16-25 per hour. Note, this data is around 4 years old. Hello All: I just wanted to clarify that all ISM internships are paid internships and they tend to pay very well. The companies at the career fairs pay and they pay very well. If you meet any companies that will not pay you (which is very un-American), then just let me know. I will gladly escort them off campus with great force and vigor (very American). Demand for you exceeds supply and that means they have to pay market value for you (very American). Pasted below is some ISM student information on internship pay. Students: 3 supply chain orgs you can join (ISMworld.org-$35, CSCMP.org, $40 & ASCM.org for free!) lnkd.in/eTfdkA94 I would highly encourage you to join orgs related to what you are majoring in. Send the message to employers that you plan on being an engaged member of your discipline. Also, these orgs have certs which can be used to externally validate you as a subject matter expert in SCM. Send the message to employers that you are aware of these certs & these certs are a part of your career goals. Further, all these SCM orgs have monthly local chapter meetings w/ guest speakers that you can attend as a student. It is a great way to learn & network. I have had several students attend these meetings & managers asked for a copy of their resume because these students showed so much initiative. You will also have access to their websites which has job postings & lots of SCM research that will help with your classes. Lastly, they will mail you magazines that tell you what is happening in your field so you can stay current. I have pasted below three of the larger ones related to SCM. __ Employers look for this on your resume: Here is one of the most popular orgs related to your major (especially if you go into procurement, though all 3 orgs have become very well rounded)... “Nearly 20% of employers said they've even had a recent college grad bring a parent to an interview...Half the respondents blamed parenting, 48% said the COVID pandemic is the culprit, & 46% said EDUCATORS are the root of the problem." Ouch! Many college grads struggle to land jobs due to a lack of preparedness, study finds www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/college-grads-struggling-land-jobs-lack-preparedness-study-finds “One in five employers reported that recent college grads are generally unprepared when it comes to interviewing for a job. More than half of employers surveyed said Gen Z candidates struggle the most with eye contact during interviews. Candidates in this age group also ask for unreasonable salaries and have dressed inappropriately for in-person interviews. Even virtual interviews have posed issues, with 21% of employers reporting that some candidates refuse to turn on their cameras for the interview.” Should college grads negotiate a job offer (i.e., a higher starting salary)? Yes, but only if you know how to negotiate. My thoughts: lnkd.in/gEZF6prG. Here’s what a lot of college grads don’t know about their first job offer: lnkd.in/gG2DeF2h. “Just 38% of new grads negotiate w/ their employers when they get that first job offer.” Are students satisfied with their college experience?...Students have overwhelmingly positive reactions to their college experience: lnkd.in/gdvDK7TQ Demonstrating self-awareness during an interview is huge. I tell my students to always answer the “what is your weakness” question in the context of having a strategy to fix it (explain what you have done about it, actual RESULTS). Interviewing tips. If you missed it, this is cool (I think)…Google's "Interview Warmup" asks practice job interview questions, then gives feedback on your spoken answers. If you can’t practice w/ another human for an upcoming job interview, Google has a new solution: Talk to its computer. www.linkedin.com/posts/sime-curkovic-61617a115_google-has-a-new-job-interview-practice-tool-activity-6977773719796547584-qn0w? Also worth noting: @LinkedIn has a similar feature where you can practice by recording an answer to an interview question and 1) get immediate AI feedback, or 2) send it to someone in your network for personal feedback. lnkd.in/d8YGspvf Get Instant AI Feedback to Improve Your Interview Answers Also, I have soooo many students asking about STAR job interviews & online robots…lnkd.in/ePzz3NG and lnkd.in/eZgTxWc STAR is a structured manner of responding to a behavioral-based interview question by discussing the situation, task, action, & result. Most companies use STAR. Star Method: Tell me of a time when you had to work within a group where the members did not get along? How did you handle the situation? More help: lnkd.in/eyCv4x5 lnkd.in/eaxVjpK Help w/ online interviews & interviewing with robots (it is AI/machine learning technology)...lnkd.in/eKBDsMq Practice before it really matters (this is mainstream now)...lnkd.in/ekaBK5Q Note, it is my understanding that these robot interviews are simply being used to weed out students. Also, that does not mean there is anything wrong w/ you if you do not get a face to face and/or onsite interview with a hiring manager. These robot interviews often simply are trying to develop a psychological profile of you & hence the weird questions. Some of these questions might be: what was the first thing you did this morning? Or what would you do if you saw someone bleeding heavily at work? The companies that use these might be trying to see if their corporate culture is a good fit for your profile. So, do not take the results personally, but learn as much as you can & get better at them (because they are not going away). The WMU website below is actually a very good link for that purpose. WMU has a service through Big Interview that has students get real life practice interview that get recorded & submitted. (I believe this is similar to Hirevue). Students can practice with Big Interview & come talk to HCOB advisors. lnkd.in/eKBDsMq How to prep for virtual career fairs: lnkd.in/evKd-VzQ lnkd.in/eNfUzksJ Interviewing tools: lnkd.in/gipsXEsK. Do not underestimate the power of a professional email signature (most do not even have one, or they have very boring ones). lnkd.in/evaNVnbv The email signature should be filled in with some relevant details to catch the potential employer's attention and earn yourself some credits for successful branding. Good email signatures for college students can be a great touch point in an email. If you add some extra contact details and a website link with your CV, it will make you look more professional. Your email signature should be professional and yes, personal, but not overloaded with unnecessary personal details. · Your full name · Your year of study and major · The name of your college or university · Clear key contact details - your main telephone number and your email address Or First Name, Last Name School Name, Expected Graduation Year Major/Minor (Note: Only include if it’s relevant) Phone Number Email More ideas: lnkd.in/epkZUrpq lnkd.in/ev4_EzNx lnkd.in/ejS2qcvF lnkd.in/eCnjxuZZ Pasted below is my email signature. Yes, it is entirely too long, but I also need to control my brand more so than people in other professions. Otherwise, enrollment in our program can go down. _______________ WMU: *No. 1 in Michigan for earnings by graduates* Sample Lectures & Should You Major in Supply Chain? lnkd.in/e9j33EQ Dr. Sime (Sheema) Curkovic, Ph.D., Professor, Supply Chain Pat Daugherty Supply Chain & Lee Honors College Fellow Associate Director, Center for Integrated Supply Management Western Michigan University, Haworth College of Business Schneider Hall 3246, Kalamazoo, MI 49008-5429 Tel.: 269.267.3093; E-Mail: sime.curkovic@wmich.edu The Western Way: "Better, faster, cheaper" www.wmich.edu/supplychain "WMU Integrated Supply Management (ISM)...Nation's best undergraduate SCM program (Gartner); 2nd in SCM technology (SoftwareAdvice); 2nd in top global SCM talent (SCM World)" Vitae: lnkd.in/e3XgRfjN LinkedIn: lnkd.in/eChDquRa _________________ I have had multiple managers tell me that a sharp email signature always catches their eye and they tend to look at the job candidate more deeply as a result. Most students within the same major often have VERY similar hard skills and pretty similar soft skills, so managers are always pulled in by what they perceive as a differentiating factor (and it could be as simple as a well thought out email signature). _________________ How to set up the post script on your smart phones for email replies... lnkd.in/eN8sUfsC I am noticing that several students & working professionals are responding to my emails via smart phones. That is fine. But, I would recommend programming your phone so that the post script tells the recipient of your message that it was sent from your smart phone. That way people will be less judgmental if a mistake was made.

From a student: “Hey, sorry that I was a little late on my HW. My inbox is flooded with emails, and I didn't see this. My apologies.” Note, never tell your boss this, especially if you shut down an OEM customer that will charge you $22K/minute. www.linkedin.com/posts/sime-curkovic-61617a115_management-email-career-activity-7047534013376339968-VCk6? HEY College Students: Do not begin an email message with “Hey” & always finish it with “Thank you.” Most college students do the bulk of their electronic communication via text messaging. Standards for emailing are different, especially in professional settings. Students' emails WILL 100% influence the way others (potential employers) view them. Emailing Your College Professor: Do's and Don'ts lnkd.in/gD3nr6tQ On avg, professionals spend 28% of their workday just reading & writing emails, which amounts to an unbelievable 2.6 hours & 120 messages received every day (in SCM it’s way more). Will Email Stand The Test Of Time? lnkd.in/gz9NTye2 College Students: Do NOT round up your GPAs, use a post script on your phones for email replies, take your email signatures VERY seriously, & use keywords on your resume. Resume advice, Do NOT round up your GPAs Students should not change their official GPA for their resume. Instead, I recommend they calculate their major GPA using the courses req'd for their major & also list their overall GPA (especially if your major GPA is much higher than your overall & your overall is under a 3.0). Also, a 2.96 GPA is not a 3.00 GPA. If an employer requests an official transcript be sent upon graduation (which they will), this could be labeled as "falsification of employment record" & as a result, an offer of employment can be revoked (if you round up your GPA). I am noticing that several of my students are responding to my emails via smart phones. That is fine. It is 2023 & your future employer will expect you to do the same. However, it can be cumbersome to write emails on your phone that are clean & easy to read. & sometimes, you try to write one word but another word appears that was not intended. So, please take the time to make sure your reply message looks professional & reflects positively on you. I would also recommend programming your phone so that the post script tells the recipient of your message that it was sent from your smart phone. You can add the message in your iPhone settings so that it will appear on all emails sent by phone but not on your email signatures sent by computer. An appropriate post script message from your phone would be: “Note: this email was sent by iPhone, please forgive grammatical errors. “ Resume Keywords: lnkd.in/ea6gV-K Thoughts on resumes: lnkd.in/gxEy9VkH lnkd.in/gCgi72kX lnkd.in/gKV5JYhR Do not underestimate the power of a professional email signature. lnkd.in/ge9nGrjx lnkd.in/evaNVnbv #resume #career #supplychain

College Students: Do NOT round up your GPAs, use a post script on your phones for email replies, take your email signatures VERY seriously, & use keywords on your resume. www.linkedin.com/posts/sime-curkovic-61617a115_careeradvice-resumeadvice-activity-6998245283591598080-XkAP? Resume advice, Do NOT round up your GPAs Students should not change their official GPA for their resume. Instead, I recommend they calculate their major GPA using the courses required for their major & also list their overall GPA (especially if your major GPA is much higher than your overall & your overall is under a 3.0). Also, a 2.96 GPA is not a 3.00 GPA. If an employer requests an official transcript be sent upon graduation (which they will), this could be labeled as "falsification of employment record" & as a result, an offer of employment can be revoked (if you round up your GPA). ___ I am noticing that several of my students are responding to my emails via smart phones. That is fine. It is 2022 & your future employer will expect you to do the same. However, it can be cumbersome to write emails on your phone that are clean & easy to read. & sometimes, you try to write one word but another word appears that was not intended. So, please take the time to make sure your reply message looks professional & reflects positively on you. Impressions will be made based on your written communication & you will be judged. I would also recommend programming your phone so that the post script tells the recipient of your message that it was sent from your smart phone. That way people will be less judgmental if a mistake was made. You can add the message in your iPhone settings so that it will appear on all emails sent by phone but not on your email signatures sent by computer. An appropriate post script message from your phone would be: “Note: this email was sent by iPhone, please forgive grammatical errors. “ ___ Resume Keywords Ideas/Action Verbs for your resume. Subject: HW: First Homework Assignment (due one week from the time email is sent) Hello Students: Assignment/Homework #1 - Please email me a one page cover letter and resume based on your major. Pretend you are looking for an internship or full-time position and I am a potential employer. Your cover letter and resume should not exceed one page each. I have examples of what a resume and cover letter should look like in your syllabus. I have also attached some. It is only meant to provide you with suggestions and ideas. I want to critique your resumes. At some point I would like to meet with each of you one-on-one to discuss your resumes. Career Services at WMU has an excellent manual that offers several ideas on career development (e.g., resumes, cover letters, interview preparation, questions to ask, questions employers cannot ask, etc.). You can download an electronic copy of this manual (as a PDF file) from the Career Services website. www.wmich.edu/business/career/students wmich.edu/sites/default/files/attachments/u91/2018/2018-20%20Career%20Development%20Guide-for-web.pdf WMU Career Development Guide - Western Michigan University Career Development Guide. MEMORANDUM To: MGMT 280-0 STUDENTS From: Dr. Sime (Sheema) Curkovic Date: June 29, 2020 Subject: Next HW Assignment Due: All email responses back to me and HW are due within one week of being sent out Assignment #2 - Most of you are ISM majors and will eventually pursue careers in supply management related fields (e.g., purchasing, operations, logistics, etc.). There are different types of certification associated with the supply management field. I have listed those below and they can also be found in the sample resumes I previously sent. You are to write a 2-3 page memo to myself regarding your certification goals. For example, do you plan on pursuing any of these certifications? If so, when? I would also like you to describe the general requirements associated with each certification. Be brief. Convince me that you understand what is entailed for each certification. The requirements of this paper do not change if you are not an ISM major. However, you must also identify other types of certification that you might want to pursue based on your major and interests. ISM students likewise are not limited to these. I have simply identified the more important ones. Data shows that people who become certified make more money and advance higher and quicker in their careers. Types of certifications that will be very relevant to your career: C.P.S.M. Do Supply Chain pros do a lot of coding? Will they expect you to? Answer: Maybe (kind of), but…lnkd.in/eQgH3YY2 I would say very little coding. Our Business Data Analytics minor does require a Python class, but I would not call it a coding class, far from it. This describes our Python class (CIS 2650): CIS2650 is not just a “Python” class, but instead a Python class for analytics (big difference). In a traditional Python class, people teach Python straight for the whole semester with tons of syntax, data structure, software development, etc. That type of class is mostly designed for CIS/CS majors. What we do is different. It is Python in a popular analytics platform (more technically speaking, it is Python in Jupyter, which is an analytics platform that data science & business analytics programs do). Can you imagine what an employer will think if they see Python in Jupyter on your resume? The reason for this design is the following: We studied the top skills in analytics jobs & Python was among the top skills. The visualization libraries in Python can produce the kind of visualizations not available in Tableau & Power BI. Students will be able to differentiate themselves from other schools. Tableau & Power BI recently added Python or Python+Jupyter because certain Python analytics & visualization are not available in Tableau & Power BI. Using them together makes it a powerful analytics solution (e.g., the ability to transform visualization into implementable actions). All data scientists stress the importance of Python in analytics programs. Note, “data scientist” is one of the fastest growing career paths with escalating salaries because not enough people are good at this stuff. Python are “R” are both #1 & #2 in analytics, but Python is easier to learn compared to R. Past experience in our SCM program shows that non-technical students (SCM, marketing, accounting, etc.) are able to handle the content that we designed. Python + Jupyter (or its variant) are used in Big Data (Hadoop, Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, etc.). It can also be used with/on SAP HANA, IoT, AI, Blockchain, & smart contracts to implement supply chain visibility, and other SC related solutions. Meeting the needs of today’s employers is important, but offering a program that does that plus something that can differentiate our students from other schools sounds even better. Compared to the analytics programs from the schools that we benchmarked, our students can do so much more. Learn to manage large amounts of data rather than pure coding (e.g., big data/predictive analytics, database management, data mining/we use RapidMiner, project management, SQL, Python, PMO, Tableau, Power BI, etc.). How much Python do I need to know in order to excel in supply chain? lnkd.in/e6Rmzpw I have had several people ask me about “Industry 4.0”. lnkd.in/eK7yQiRD Do you know how to use Power BI or Tableau? Do not be a victim of technology. lnkd.in/epHAQNDF

After a few thousand students, I would say this is the #1 reason my students change jobs (it's their boss). Money becomes a factor when they can make > 20% elsewhere (#2 on list below). "Quiet quitters" make up at least 50% of the U.S. workforce -- probably more, Gallup finds. U.S. employee engagement took another step backward during the 2nd quarter 2022, w/ the proportion of engaged workers remaining at 32% but the proportion of actively disengaged increasing to 18%. The ratio of engaged to actively disengaged employees is now 1.8 to 1. lnkd.in/gb4WBKvf U.S. productivity posts biggest EVER drop in 2nd quarter 2022. This is a very complicated calculation, but it is very concerning. Has how we managed the last 2+ years caught up to us? This not only will make inflation harder to beat, it contributes to inflation. Note, in the quarter after Sept. 11th, & during the Great Recession of 2007-09 & early in the pandemic, American productivity SOARED. Why? Because it’s what we do. Something is amiss in 2022. I think Leadership got us into this, & Leadership can get us out. For example, here are Four Ways to Energize a Post-Pandemic Workforce (which have largely been downplayed in my opinion): 1. Great read (see our new apprenticeship program below): The Supply Chain Of Supply Chain Talent Is Broken www.forbes.com/sites/ryancraig/2024/02/08/the-supply-chain-of-supply-chain-talent-is-broken/?sh=6f7678dc69d7 From article…“In some ways, it’s odd supply chain & procurement hadn’t come to the forefront sooner….Managing complex processes on paper or w/ spreadsheets is impossible…All told, the supply chain may comprise as much as 37% of all jobs - 44M jobs…64% of companies are experiencing a supply chain talent gap...Colleges aren’t providing any coursework or training on Salesforce, Workday, or SAP. And if they’re not doing that, they’re highly unlikely to introduce specialized procurement and supply chain platform curriculum.” NOTE: there are programs (not many though) providing the knowledge and skills the writer is lamenting. For example, in regards to apprenticeship programs: We just concluded a co-op pilot program with a F500 company that was highly successful and has started its second iteration in 2024. So, what makes this Co-op program different? It is based on the European apprentice programs, whereby students work part time as an integral part of their studies. The advantages are that students learn from hands-on experience, while also earning college credits. It is not students with a part time job next to their studies. In this program students work with company mentors and WMU-SCM faculty on projects that are directly linked to the SCM curriculum. At the end of every semester presentations are made to the company and WMU-SCM faculty members. At this point it is decided if both parties want to continue the engagement and, what the student’s grade is. Students can earn up to three courses (nine credit hours). Because of the required time, effort, and resources, i.e., investments, that the employer commits to the students, the learning experience and personal growth the students achieve from the Co-op program is unique. At the same time, the engagement between employer firm and WMU-SCM faculty improves on our industry relations, and provides yet additional opportunities for research support from the firm to the WMU-SCM program. The next company who will start a similar Co-op program will be another F500, yet another board member AND a corporate sponsor of the WMU-SCM program, underlining the commitment of our industry partners to the success of our students. Students are selected through a half day long hiring event. Together with employer and input from the WMU SCM leadership, we pre-select students. We travel up to HQ with them, where the students take an office tour, learn about the company, and they take part in interviewing sessions with several managers. ___ WMU Supply Chain Management Program: lnkd.in/erU3yTTW Delia Dohm’s curiosity guides her to success as the first WMU student in new co-op program: lnkd.in/emQrD2mk Thank you Ryan Craig for a great read (very timely in my world). hashtag#supplychainmanagement hashtag#logistics hashtag#procurement hashtag#college hashtag#apprenticeships

There are the six rules of 'insane productivity' that Elon Musk lives by www.indy100.com/science-tech/elon-musk-six-points-productivity-2658796372 I just advised my students that #4 was very dangerous territory because it could really backfire (make sure you understand the culture for doing so): #4 Don't use "chain of command" to communicate. Musk emailed staff at Tesla, and Twitter, giving suggestions to improve productivity. ___ 1. Reduce the frequency of meetings According to Musk, "excessive meetings are the blight of big companies and almost always get worse over time." To make meetings more effective Musk suggests fewer of them unless there's an urgent matter to address. 2. Leave meetings that aren't valuable Similar to rule one, if an employee finds they cannot contribute successfully to a meeting then they should be allowed to leave with no repercussions. "It is not rude to leave, it is rude to make someone stay and waste their time," Musk says. 3. Don't use acronyms or nonsense words The best way to communicate effectively is to be direct about what you're saying, this means "don't use acronyms or nonsense words for objects, software, or processes." 4. Don't use "chain of command" to communicate "Communication should travel via the shortest path necessary to get the job done," Musk told employees. Musk finds it unnecessary for lower-level employees to communicate issues through the chain of command, rather than approaching a person directly. "Any manager who attempts to enforce chain of command communication will soon find themselves working elsewhere," he added. 5. Use common sense While it may seem obvious, some people need a reminder to use common sense in most situations. Musk used the example of following a "company rule" that would be "obviously ridiculous in a particular situation." 6. Avoid big meetings “Excessive meetings are the blight of big companies and almost always get worse over time. Please get [out] of all large meetings, unless you’re certain they are providing value to the whole audience, in which case keep them very short.”

The top 10 most-regretted college majors - and the degrees graduates wish they had pursued instead. “Bachelor’s degree holders generally earn 84% more than those with just a high school diploma…STEM, health and business majors are among the highest-paying…Top-paying college majors earn $3.4 million more than the lowest-paying majors over a lifetime.” lnkd.in/gfAFzNiP. www.visualcapitalist.com/sp/interested-in-a-career-in-global-trade/ The unemployment rate for Americans w/ a college degree has dropped to 1.9%. The avg cost of college tuition & fees at public 4-year institutions has risen 179.2% the last 20 years for an avg annual increase of 9.0%. It’s a disturbing chart. BUT, while my supply chain students spend around $60K for their degree, they graduate with a job that pays $60-75K, & many are at 100K by age 30. That’s not bad ROI, right? Education boosts earning power...Avg salary by education 2022 (inflated IMO): 1. High school diploma $98,157; 2. Two-year degree $91,204; 3. Some college $108,647; 4. Bachelor’s degree $134,037; 5. Master’s degree $163,335; 6. Ph.D. $265,606. lnkd.in/gESQFNZa Over their lifetime, an MBA graduate can expect to earn $3M more than someone w/ only a bachelor’s degree. ...by 2030, the U.S. could experience unrealized revenue of $1.748 trillion due to labor shortages - equivalent to 6% of the country’s entire economy. I think it is going to be WAY worse because people are having WAY fewer kids. lnkd.in/gSPR9AfU If you look at this 2020-30 job growth chart closely, all things supply chain related scored VERY well (i.e., operations & logistics). lnkd.in/gbWAzjjK Basically, we are going to see 20-30% growth in SCM jobs over the next decade. Also, the jobs in SCM pay VERY well. Lastly, the data science jobs scored off the charts in growth & pay. So, SCM + data science = jobs & $. Finally, automation is killing all things manual (negative job growth). My students are getting worried about the job market because they are hearing about this recession. Yes, recessions tend to be very bad for college grads. However...Yes, the number of job openings fell for the 3rd straight month to 10.698M in June which is the lowest since 10.629M in August 2021 (off the record high of 11.855 million in March). But, that means there are only (sarcasm) around 11M unfilled jobs. National unemployment is 3.7% (near 50 year lows). That is not a labor recession. College grads, worry not (not even close). Recession Graduates: lnkd.in/gY9FC6TR The benefits of starting college in a recession lnkd.in/gZFAmqXX After a few thousand students, I would say this is the #1 reason my students change jobs (it's their boss). Do you know how to use Power BI or Tableau? Which does your company use? Is it mainstream? Do not be a victim of technology. lnkd.in/eKEaPGq Visualization is big. Kellogg’s is one of the largest users of Tableau in Michigan & Tableau is owned by Salesforce. Salesforce is huge & is worth $220B. PowerBI is owned by Microsoft which is even huger than Salesforce & MSFT is worth $2,475,000,000,000 - that is $2.475 Trillion! PowerBI (MSFT) is playing catch-up but making significant strides. Tableau is the real deal. But so is Power BI. Students ask me which one will prevail in the market place? I have no idea but would you bet against a $2T company? Based on what I have seen, they both might be long term players in this space. CIS 3640 (this is the 3rd of 4 classes in our Business Analytics minor) has added Tableau & Power BI. Both Power BI & Tableau target the similar market - visualization & end-user BI. The consensus is that Power BI should be there in CIS 3640 for several reasons. One key reason is that Microsoft is making it free of charge, while Tableau is not. We will continue to monitor the market & adjust accordingly. In short, the current plan is to have Power BI in CIS 3640. Tableau is being added to a 3640 section as an “experiment”. Please let me know of disagree with any of this. I had a student with a “Technology Skills” section on her resume. She (BA minor) listed all the things she learned in all her SCM and BA courses. During an interview, an employer asked her, do you really know how to do all this stuff? I would love to be asked that! As of today, what would a Technology Skills section on your resume look like? Note: I have a few former students (not many) that lost their jobs during covid as they became victims of downsizing. If you asked me what was the key underlying theme, I would say they were weak on technology. Also, during covid, I had numerous employers ask for help finding talent because they were hiring like crazy. Kind of ironic, right? The bottom line is that it really doesn’t matter which tool students learned (as long as there is industry evidence to support the tool selection). The two tools share so many similarities. Usually one should be able to transition from one tool to another with minimal learning. If SCM students already know what tools they are going to be using at the internship or job, they might want to talk to talk to their CIS faculty. This will help them pick the desired course section. Otherwise, it is hard for us to predict what analytics & visualization tools each student will be using & which company they will end up working. Does your resume have this?... -big data/analytics, database management, data mining, project management, SQL, Python, PMO, Tableau, Power BI, etc. lnkd.in/eK7yQiRD Python: lnkd.in/e6Rmzpw lnkd.in/efCCBQ5s
