Make sure to send things a couple days BEFORE you arrive in a town bc shipping can have you waiting if its not planned accordingly sometimes. I'm Sure this was already thought of but just in case lol Also hand warmers in the bottom of a cold sleeping bag can be a great way to cozy up on a colder night. A backup sawyer squeeze is never a bad idea either.

nutritional yeast is a good thing to have too. It adds a nice cheesy flavor and has tons of B vitamins too.

A reminder, petroleum jelly is a reliable fire starter. I think people often put it on cotton balls, drier lint, etc. So that's another use for your petroleum jelly. Safe travels!

I actually keep a small pill bottle filled with a few of these as soaked as possible. Great fire starter in a wet environment like this

Super easy to make also, 15-20ish cotton balls in a baggie, small spoon full of petroleum jelly, microwave for 3 or 4 seconds and then knead the bag.

Another good aspect to resupplying and figuring out what you need is that for the first part of the trail you are hiking towards home. By the time you get into Hot Springs and beyond you will know exactly what you need, don't need and can swap out everything if you choose without the extra cost of shipping or hoping a package makes it to you. To me that would be a comforting thought and a great benefit of living in the mountains of NC.

Exactly! I have a few places marked where my people can come meet me, bring supplies, and provide support. After Damascus, those resources dwindle.

Standing ovation! You're sooo thorough and well thought out. 🙂 Your food variety is awesome. Summer sausage rocks! It's a rational fear/concern to be extra conscientious about things getting wet. It takes mere moments to be certain, as opposed to the struggle of drying things out. You're spot on. ✌️

Very helpful to my planning, thanks!! Couple questions that you've maybe answered elsewhere: What's your total pack weight looking like? What's your start date? And what are you planning to average per day in terms of miles?

I thought the Post Office had a priority box that ships for same price, no matter how much it weighs. The boxes you have are not the official post office ones

Resupply boxes add as much as 20 to 30 dollars to what you are getting. I did alot of it in 2017, but in the future I wont. As for you with all the cool food you've made it's a good thing. Also, this might be the first time I'm the first comment anywhere! So in summation, you like cheap resupply or even expensive backpacker meals, much cheaper to resupply as you go along the trail. BUT, if you have prepared your own meals or have special dietary needs this wont add so much as to make it prohibitive, just be careful on planning! I actually met someone on trail allergic to corn. With corn sugar flavoring everything these days I'll let ya guess how hard that was for him and where he dropped out at....

Wow! You are very organized! You kinda made my head spin. That's not a bad thing. I wish I could be more organized! Very Impressive. So, you may have talked about this already. What made you decide to get the bear canister vs the scent proof bear bags? I am going to be doing some bikepacking out west and will need some sort of food, accessory protection. Would just like to hear your rationale. Thanks! Looking forward to your thru hike. Stay safe! ... Ciao
@appalachianadventurista

Thanks for your question! I chose the bear canister primarily because of my strong dislike of hanging bear bags (which does not come from a place of not knowing HOW to hang them). I just don’t want to bother at the end of the day. The simplicity of just setting down a bear canister is a huge plus. It’s also a stool. And guarantees water proofing and protection from all critters (mice, etc).
@c_steve_j

@@appalachianadventurista Those are very good points, some I had not thought of. I'll have to do some experimenting with a canister on my bike along with the other gear. I think for me, the bag is going to be easier to manage and put on a bike. Thanks for your time. ... Ciao

I remove comments extremely rarely (only 2 ever) - only if the user has been consistently hateful and negative. KZbin itself also sensors comments, I’m unsure of their filters. Otherwise, it could have also been flagged by another viewer and reported.
