Cast Iron is one of the no cutting oil materials when cutting, mostly because you end up making a mud mess of the part and your machinery, making it harder to keep out of ways and screws areas.

@billdlv Keyways should allways be done in one pass, more so with an end mill, due to the side pull from the tool pressure.

sure would of liked to see the saw run or (should I say wobble) before and than after repair nice job like your vids. you explain very good

Thank's.Talking about milling cutters,I have several circular cutters for a horizontal,1" bore in many shapes and sizes. If you run short on a job and need a few,I could give you some,as all I have is a #4 burke horizontal mill, and could never use them all.The knowledge I have gained watching these videos is price enough

Hi Stan, A sharp corner in bottom of a key way is just as much a stress riser as leaving the top of the key way square and sharp. Marine shafting is very hard and strong to handle torsion loads, but at the same time it is some what brittle when pounded upon, repeatedly, like when a coupling or prop gets loose and sharp surfaces, is where it gives way first then continues the crack until you break the shaft completely. ;{)-----

I'm a mechanical engineer. You mentioned marine keyways have radius bottoms, versus normal keyways that have flat bottoms. Why do marine applications use radius bottom keyways? I never came across that in my work. Thanks for the great movies.

Was the rest of the machine falling apart, I can't imagine it was because of the quality of the repair? Looks tip top. The neglect was so bad on the blade portion, I can imagine the rest of the upkeep was just as degraded.

Keith I notice you make the key way in one pass with a slow feed rate on the table. Is that better than a couple of passes at a faster feed? Thanks for filming this project its great that you take the time to do it.

To each his own ; but I have always used waxed paper wrapped around the shaft for clearance and the Mill I worked in had about 10 miles of lineshafts and you were poring Bearings every day

Well it was in my face when I was inspecting the machine several years earlier, might of been a bit small, but looked huge, for a saw and I'm not in the saw blade business. ;{)-----

You said the blade was 36 inch's? I would've liked to witnessed it in action. I bet it made OSHA inspectors gag.

I can't believe that some fool would drive a tapered key into a browning style hub designed for a straight key with set screw! That is just plain dumb. but like likely came loose and the set screw hole was hidden by the overhanging pulley.
