I’ve never did the water break in with my Holmes motors or any motor. Just didn’t seem right. All of my Holmes motors are running strong even though all of the abuse. Absolutely love them.

So basically breaking in a motor is making sure that the brushes are properly bedded in. ie they conform to the shape of the comutator,for maximum contact therefore minimising losses and maximum current flow . This will show my age but when we used to rebuild generators or as you Americans called them dynamos on cars, we would run them up and apply a pumice stone to the comutator for a few seconds and then your brushes were "bed in ", made a huge difference to output and arcing on the com". Blow it with a bit of shop air , no water, no rust , put it straight to work.

I been threw like 3 brushed motors this summer. They only last like a week. Maybe 10 5500ah batteries. It's a t12 550 type. How long are they suppose to last?

I just run all my new brushed motors dry on 50% throttle for 15-20 minutes outside of chassis and they arc less on full throttle after this😊 👍 I think I have started doing this because saw some info about this (wet break in) procedure and, as almost always, it just sounds worth doing...). I decided to avoid water because of ball bearing in sealed can motors ☺️

Nope, never done a water break in... Just kept my motors dry and clean, and run them gently for an hour or two as the break in. But based on what your saying, I'm sure many motor manufacturers would love people to break them in via the water method - it's a way to move more product. LOL

I never did a water breakin with my rtr brushed motors. I ran rally cars at first I just drove them for 1 pack at 50% throttle, then it was off to the races. I have been brushless for the last 8 years. My TRX4 started off brushed but now has a Revolver w/ a Python X esc. The Revolver with a CC esc is the closet I've driven to the brushed experiance I had when the truck was new. I plan on buy a couple of your brushed motors for it and my other crawler. My plans for this year is to build a comp crawler based on the Vanquish Pro Carbon kit. I want a comp brushed setup for it.

Ruined a Traxxas 12t motor back 10+ years ago. Nobody told me distilled water(the hard water i used caked up lime on the brushes instantly). I did learn how to take apart, and re-assemble a sealed can motor. Even made a little tool that would hold the brushes out so it could slide back together. Back when i would waste 5 hours to save 20$....the good ol days of young and dumb.

We race Tamiya m chassis at our local club , 21t sealed can, a coule of us ran them in water in reverse for 10 to 15mins at 3 volts then some comm oil drops on the brushes. Apparently the reverse break in can give you a slight timing advance.

How do y'all break them in? I did the water method decades ago, but I just spin them up with no load at like 1/4 throttle for a few minutes and then blow them out nowadays. Where do babies come from? I've been looking for a stork carrying one to a new home my whole life, but I've yet to see one...

That's for the next video! You see, when a mommy stork loves a daddy stork, they go to the baby stork store and order one. Lead time is currently 10 to 12 weeks after that bridge collapse. Turns out Baltimore was a major hub for about half of the parts used to assemble them 🤦‍♂️

I did water breakin with my old clod motors about 10 years ago still running them still no rust they were cheap and probably use bushings instead of bearings so that might help some lol I figured it was more trouble than it was worth and didn't see any reason to keep doing it those motors spent a lot of time underwater in there lifetime lol no rust that I have ever seen and still goin

I respectfully disagree. Yes, HH does a dry break-in but it needs to be done right - using low voltage, at slow speed, with serrated brushes - and NOT in a vehicle. Breaking in a motor, while you drive it, leads to erratic voltage spikes (refardless of speed) and bouncing that causes pitting of the commutator and leads to inconsistent brush wear and reduces performance and longevity. It was true 35 years ago and it's true today. A water break-in is quick and easy and while racers might wear away a significant portion of the brush, crawlers only need to do a short 1-2 minute break-in to reap the benefits of this method. Yes, you need to carefully clean out the motor but once lubed, the oil will force out any liquid. I'd be much more concerned about dirt and dust that will become a gooey, abrasive mix, if left. Both methods, done incorrectly, can have damaging results. I think you're exaggerating the dangers of a water break-in but if you're adamant that a dry break-in is the way to go, then at least make a video showing the proper method. Despite disagreeing, I still thought it was a well done video and you brought up some good points. Always good to discuss different view points. And that song - hilarious 😂

The main problem that we've found is that most crawlers don't have experience rebuilding motors. Far more customers damaging the motor attempting water break in, as compared to damage from using a motor without fully seated brushes.

I still do wet break in , I do motors for Traxxas Slash /Mudboss racing and there is a huge difference in performance , they only last about 6 races but they are way faster. I dont do straight water.

Are you working on an ESC that is calibrated for 10 Poles? I've smoked 2 copperhead10s due to the 10 shooter getting stuck between poles. Motor starts chattering then esc goes up in smoke. Sensorless it's fine but cogs. HELP

I have a question that's not about this video. I just assume you'll see it sooner than if I asked on a year old video.. This is my thinking.. Trx4 high trail, I'm going to gear it down from stock to 9t pinion, 45t spur and both diffs are going to 10/35 ring and Pinion. I'm running a stock titan 21 turn 550. I'm eye balling your 27 turn brushed 550 can torque master. Will this give me more torque? Other than the re gearing? I know gearing, I don't know much about motors, one of your videos you say gear down and kv up. So does that mean I would get more torque from a 17 turn brushed motor? I'm using 8.4v NiMH battery. My trx4 k10 is a tow truck and it weighs 16 lbs. Tell me what you think. Speed is no my priority. Being able to tow and pull hard is what I'm after. So far stock has been just fine, but I am considering an upgrade. Please let me know, thank you.

I prefer to oil bath each new motor is 80/90 gear lube with some limited slip, additive, it really improves traction, when you’re out crawling, even better if you just wipe the motor down after the oil bath, and install it right into the truck, performance is second to none at that point !!

so first off the petina you say a brushed motor needs reduces continuity a clean comm will not hurt the motor or less the life and a break i never believed in but it does make a difference when i ran the spec class the other night the one guy who broke his motor in was way faster than every one else noticeably so i think youre assesment is weak on break in mine was it does make a difference if done correctly but that racing you want ultimatly longer lasting yes run it with no break in you get full brush life me personally i dont belive in forty min breakins 5 to 10 min in the bath is broke in to me
