Hi Randy and Joy!! I had to jump on here and send a MASSIVE thank you. Your channel has been SO informative, authentic, approachable, realistic and yes, HONEST. My son started Muay Thai training 2 years ago in Seattle, Washington, and he turned 18 in August. His biggest dream since starting Muay Thai was to train in Thailand and fight. As a single mother, I was worried I would be unable to help him see his dream come true. Well, 10 days ago we landed in Chiang Mai. He started his one month training at Hongthong gym and I am here accompanying him and falling in LOVE with Chiang Mai more and more each day. I would watch your videos daily before leaving, taking notes and learning so much. I trusted the content you were giving. While I used to travel before I had my son, it had been over 20 years since living and traveling internationally. My fears outweighed my courage for months, but with the help of your channel and guidance, I felt confident to buy our tickets and just go for it. We have 18 days remaining, and on Wednesday, Sept. 11, my son with fight his first fight in Thailand at the Night Bazaar market!!!!! He is so supported by his gym and the people we have met along the way and I could just cry tears of gratitude for setting this goal and making it happen. I feel like you and Joy are friends, and I have visited many of the suggestions you have offered. All this to say that this channel LITERALLY gave me the information and motivation to see things through. We are already planning for our return trip and hope to stay 3 months instead of one. I may just end of living here part time! Kap kun ka a million times over!

Bridget, what an amazing message. Thank you! I'm out of town at the moment or Joy and I would come and cheer for your son. I'm so glad you are both enjoying Thailand and it is rewarding to think our channel gave a little help along the way. Thank you so much for taking the time to write.

@@RetiredGlobalLife EXACTLY why I'm coming there. With my COPD health condition, at some point I will need assistance, and I'm not about to trust my care to the overpriced, neglectful (sometimes, even abusive, according to news reports) elder facilities here in the USA. I've seen several videos documenting the caring, gentle, affordable senior care facilities Thailand offers. What a 180° difference, there, on the other side of the world!! So I'm on my way to Thailand, while I'm still "at myself." Respect for elders being a part of Thai culture is an important contributor to that gentle care, and it's pitifully lacking in the USA, unfortunately. (IMO.)

I totally agree about choosing a nicer place to live. I prefer a place that is large enough to hang out with friends and have family/friends visit from my home country. You're rent is still pretty cheap for a place like that. I live in the USA (Ohio) and will be retiring in about 5-6 years in my early 60s. I am seriously considering Thailand as my 'final destination' but I need to plan an exploratory visit soon. I'd have to work until age 65 to be able to afford a carefree retirement here in the USA and that's just not an option for me. I decided long ago that I wanted to retire by age 60 and I'm 55 now, so hopefully I can make it happen!

I’m a Canadian from Vancouver BC and I know Chiang Mai well. I have lived there, and have close Thai friends there. I really do love Chiang Mai, not because it lacks an efficient transit system (as say compared to the BTS in Bangkok), and not for the infamous annual crop-burning pollution that is so dangerous to human health, and which really has no solution in sight due to the fact that much of the burning exists outside of Thailand, in the neighbouring countries of Myanmar and Laos. I love Chiang Mai instead, for exactly the reasons you have so eloquently highlighted in your program which, incidentally, has once again rekindled my internal debate as to whether I should take that leap and finally relocate to Chiang Mai to live out the balance of my retirement there. If I do, I will make it a point to get in touch, and perhaps convince you that I may be a worthy addition to your roster of “new” friends in Chiang Mai. All the best, and many thanks.

Great informational video Randy. I have also told people how affordable it is in Thailand. Sorry, I have to share the video. Also, I have finally sold my house and property!! Heading to Thailand on the 7th of September! Need a retirement visa and all the things you mentioned. Like to be able to get things done in a timely manner. Take care.

Randy,I’ve just stumbled on your video and my first reaction was OMG so much truth on the reality of the relationship between men and women nowadays. Of course there are many exceptions on both sides of the fence. I was very impressed with the production of your video ie situations, characters and music selection. Great Job 👏 For a while I’ve been contemplating a retirement in a Senior Living Complex in Hua Hin. I love the beach,coming from Sydney AUS,and would miss it terribly if it’s not there. You maybe able to answer this question for me,if you’ve got knowledge of both places: How would you describe the difference in life style between the two cities,and the reason you would choose one against the other. I would be interested in your assessment.
@RetiredGlobalLife3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the nice words, Alex. I've never been to Sydney but I have to Hua Hin and Joy and I actually did a video on it if you want to look it up. I think it is a nice calm beach city, and Cha Am even smaller down the coast a bit and very popular. I suggest you check it out when you are in Hua Hin. It does not have the cultural heritage and temples that my home city of Chiang Mai has, but few beach cities, if any, do. I'd miss that, and the mountain hiking in CM.

These are great points and I'm loving this video as I'm not the guy looking for bargain basement on everything. I like to have nice things and a productive environment. Living in a slum area just doesn't do it for me. I want to live in Thailand as I think my social life would improve.

Thanks for your video, Randy and Joy. I totally agree with you, it's not only the cost of living but also the quality of life in Thailand. We pay too much here for not so good quality of life. Cost of renting a nice condo in Thailand is even cheaper than what we pay for property tax in OC, California. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to convince my husband to retire in Thailand. We will be in Chiang Mai (and Chiang Rai) for two weeks - the last two week of November. Hope to see you guys around old city wall - Tina & Joe

Thanks! And yes, I do leave during the burning season. A forced holiday or trip, not a negative things for me but I'm lucky to have the flexibility to move around. Many Thais are super low income and tied to jobs and I feel very bad for them.

Very good comprehensive video,Randy. I'd add from my experience , when you live here your stress levels , as opposed to back home , hugely diminished. And that's good for your health. Btw,I live in Chiang mai, in Bangkok it may not apply. The traffic will get to you..

Always good to hear from you, Tom. I should have mentioned lack of stress, wish I would have. Good idea. Yes, traffic in Bangkok is often bad, but I zip around on the MRT or BTS, just so you avoid the rush busy hours.

Another brilliant video, Im thinking of retiring to Thailand next year but tell me what is the best way to get accommodation? Is it possible to turn up at a hotel and just book in or would I have to book something in my home country first.
@RetiredGlobalLife3 ай бұрын
There are always rooms available but in high season, which varies by location a bit, but Nov Dec are popular almost everywhere, rates go up and less places to stay. I think best to book in advance and fun to choose from the many options online. We did a video on cool hotels in Chiang Mai.

Where do you play pickleball? We played near teh garbage dump in Chaing Mai, also a crematorium, bad smells, wonderful people though, we loved teh group, but would prefer a much better place to play pickleball in Chaing Mai. Agree with everything in this video, been going to Thailand for 25 years, we plan to self insure for healthcare, we have done the math, it is way less money to pay as you go for medical care, we don't smoke or drink alcohol, eat very healthy foods, early 60's, and in very good shape, we play pickleball everyday if possible. We are moving with my wife to Hua Hin as soon as we sell our home here ini Canada. I love your honest videos, keep it up!!!

Thanks! I don't play as much as I'd like. When in the US I try to play almost every day. There are three outdoor courts a few minutes south of the old city. And several indoor courts in CM and the outskirts. Nothing like we have in Calif though.

You talk complete sense, especially about Thai women’s attitude to western men. I was married to a Thai for 15 years until she sadly passed away last year, but the reason we were a successful couple was that mutual commitment to caring for each other. I haven’t found that in Western women. Thanks for a brilliant set of vlogs. I will likely retire to Thailand, where her family live, and enjoy life with them.

Great video , . I had a bad tooth ache recently and I had to make an appointment for a dentist consultation which was a month later and another appointment for them to fix the tooth . So I had to deal with a tooth ache for almost 2 months . And to top it off they had absolutely no compassion . I had to get a crown and it cost $2,089.00 . The random violence in the states is out of control as well. Wish I could leave now , but have 2 boys in High School . Stay well…

Nicely done 👍. I liked the format. All your points are spot on and true. I love living here, I love my feen, and plan on staying until the end. Bangkok is home for this year, but Sisaket probably next summer. I too love most thai food, but had pizza delivered tonight, with wings, onion rings and chocolate lava cake, all for $24.53 in USD. or 850฿ or so But very inexpensive thai food is everywhere, and don't forget 7-11... lol it has everything! My quality of life here is fantastic, and wouldn't change it for anything. I spend around $600 per month on housing, and that includes water, electric and fibre internet on a 2 bedroom 1 bath. i wouldn't want to spend alot on housing but understand your point. Currently I belong to a nice gym and working with a personal trainer. That, thai language school, and my girlfriend keeps me busy, and healthy. I could write a few pages on medical stuff... i will spare you lol... As usual great info, thanks!

Thanks Randy, about time we saw a video about the most important reason to move to Thailand ... the lifestyle, as opposed to just moving your lifestyle and imposing it on another country. So many videos are just about taking advantage of such friendly and kind hearted people. Next, I hope we see some videos about giving back to the country ... getting involved in the local culture ... being more a part of the culture, not just a "tourist" ... about how can a person get involved IN the culture (like learning the language, having a bbq or lunch with some local people, pronouncing words correctly ... respecting the people and the culture) ... Good start 👍🏽... and next time you're at the Phaploen Market, don't sit in front of me so I can't see the band! 🤭
