This is one of the most successful interviews that I have ever seen. Others scratched the surface and earned clicks from a cheap headline. This was a deep dive to a person’s mind and motivations. From all this comes a deep understanding of the importance of systems thinking in investing.

Wow! This was an amazing interview for several reasons: 1. Provides an inspirational account of one regular (as opposed to rich) person’s journey to financial independence. 2. Interesting how the most successful Tesla KZbinrs who are also into TSLA, actually live frugally. Quite refreshing. 3. Provides great insights into the experience of working for big tech, and differences between various tech companies, in terms of how much they are willing to push for innovation. For this purpose, I am going to strongly recommend a couple of young folks I know, who are currently studying engineering, to watch this interview. Jason has been very brave to lay bare the details of his investments. Thank you. Great conversation! Thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Gary Vaynerchuk would be totally proud of that time you slept in your car for 6 months in order to save $15k so you could invest it wisely! So many people could change their fortunes if they only realized what they could do without for awhile and do some investing with all that money. Hats off to you for taking a calculated risk based on your experience and knowledge. That's why investing is an individual endeavor; only you can decide if that risk is worth taking. Thanks Jason for taking the time to share with us. I really enjoyed hearing your story. And thank you so much Dave Lee for all you do to with your videos to help the average investor.

Experienced that sleepless anxiety when I sold on a drop...for profit...but needlessly accumulated a giant tax bill. Buy and hold was the lesson. Sometimes the most important lessons are also the most painful lesson. People who think Teslanaires are simply lucky to have bought and held a great stock are missing the actual story. The process.
@sharhful
@sharhful 3 жыл бұрын
How much tax did you have to pay?
@E59FF
@E59FF 3 жыл бұрын
$75k. But at the time that was actually a large portion of my portfolio. Worst part is I got caught in a ‘wash sale’... look it up if you’re not familiar. I was able to lower my cost basis by about 10 percentage points… But TBH, it’s insignificant at this point; but the tax bill was quite significant. I share this not because I’m proud of it; but so that others learn from my mistake. Buy and hold is the mantra for a reason.
@davidricardo86
@davidricardo86 3 жыл бұрын
But then when is the "right time to sell" if there's always a tax bill at the end of the sale? Seems like there isn't a perfect time, or is there? Buy and hold... "Forever" (because I want to avoid the tax bill)? Taxes are inevitable, I'm just trying to understand this lesson. I understand taking profits is part of the game too but so is leaving some chips on the table so they can continue to work for you. Once I've hit a goal and have plans for the gains, I have to pay taxes regardless otherwise I cannot just hold indefinitely and never execute on my other goal for the money I've earned and have plans for (for example to aid in buying my first home). Any help in understanding would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
@DonBrowningRacing

@@davidricardo86 you understand it perfectly. I’ve paid big taxes all my life because I get to keep approximately 70-80% of every million I’ve ever made. I'm so grateful for the warning about margin. I'm exactly where he was, naively owning about 30% of my portfolio in margin because in my head "as long as equity appreciates more than margin interest, it's worth it," which I now realize is so dangerous. Really nice interview Dave…Jason seems like a very humble likable guy. A lot of hilarity in this story. I’m really glad you did this interview for others see the value in investing. The whole internalizing the concept of compounding interest took me a bit to get, but now I have such a large finacial investment base it almost seems unfair how easy it is to grow your wealth by huge numbers at a certain point. I have been trying to share internalizing the ‘compound interest effect’ to many young people. I am almost sixty now and have done well, but if I had internalized this in my 20’s I would have extreme amounts of wealth at my current age. Having a lot of money allows one to do many great philanthropic things for the planet or society. It buys back the autonomy of your time to pursue the things you really love. For me I now have the time to purse my passion of coral conservation work. 😎🤙🏼

kids learn fast, lots of curiosity. My Dan was an electronics engineer and machine fabricator. As a Child I played with all the tools and almost cut my finger off with a band saw. The skills I got helping my dad build machine to make fortune cookies help me to be a great auto mechanic and carpenter working on houses. I feel sorry for people without that early upbringing. When I retired I help my son remodel 2 homes in Los Angelos. I drew the plans and my son converted it to Auto-cad. What an experience working with my son. To this day we learned to do what seem like the impossible. We anchored the house sheared wall the house with plywood did all the electrical plumbing and completely everything. We very rarely hired anyone so we did all the work ourselves. After completion of the job on two houses, the building inspector ask how we were able to get the job done. I told him KZbin. The inspector said the LA inspector said we were the talk of the town the father and son construction that didn’t know much. Never give up and don’t be afraid to ask others for help. Amasing Episode. Jason I feel you a lot. Yes with loosing shares but even more so explaining conviction to others. Yes as you can learn how to pitch a startup you can apply it to the investment thesis....but what is out of your hands is the lack of patience by your friends or others investors listening to the arguments. Since it's a conjunction that makes the magic you first need to explain each part. Many of my friends left the party to early because that hat some disagreement on some details. So we'll deserved. Enjoy surfing

by far the honest interview i have seen. I had a change to drive the Model S over a weekend in 2014 and realized this company has a future. But then our start up got bankruptcy and i have to focus on building up life again. I bought Tesla stock in 2018 (which i have to say too late). One question, do you think it's clever to sell Tesla's stock when it high and buy back when it down (to get more stocks)
