Wow! This was an amazing interview for several reasons: 1. Provides an inspirational account of one regular (as opposed to rich) person’s journey to financial independence. 2. Interesting how the most successful Tesla KZbinrs who are also into TSLA, actually live frugally. Quite refreshing. 3. Provides great insights into the experience of working for big tech, and differences between various tech companies, in terms of how much they are willing to push for innovation. For this purpose, I am going to strongly recommend a couple of young folks I know, who are currently studying engineering, to watch this interview. Experienced that sleepless anxiety when I sold on a drop...for profit...but needlessly accumulated a giant tax bill. Buy and hold was the lesson. Sometimes the most important lessons are also the most painful lesson. People who think Teslanaires are simply lucky to have bought and held a great stock are missing the actual story. The process.
@sharhful3 жыл бұрын
How much tax did you have to pay?
@E59FF3 жыл бұрын
$75k. But at the time that was actually a large portion of my portfolio. Worst part is I got caught in a ‘wash sale’... look it up if you’re not familiar. I was able to lower my cost basis by about 10 percentage points… But TBH, it’s insignificant at this point; but the tax bill was quite significant. I share this not because I’m proud of it; but so that others learn from my mistake. Buy and hold is the mantra for a reason.
@davidricardo863 жыл бұрын
But then when is the "right time to sell" if there's always a tax bill at the end of the sale? Seems like there isn't a perfect time, or is there? Buy and hold... "Forever" (because I want to avoid the tax bill)? Taxes are inevitable, I'm just trying to understand this lesson. I understand taking profits is part of the game too but so is leaving some chips on the table so they can continue to work for you. Once I've hit a goal and have plans for the gains, I have to pay taxes regardless otherwise I cannot just hold indefinitely and never execute on my other goal for the money I've earned and have plans for (for example to aid in buying my first home). Any help in understanding would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Really nice interview Dave…Jason seems like a very humble likable guy. A lot of hilarity in this story. I’m really glad you did this interview for others see the value in investing. The whole internalizing the concept of compounding interest took me a bit to get, but now I have such a large finacial investment base it almost seems unfair how easy it is to grow your wealth by huge numbers at a certain point. I have been trying to share internalizing the ‘compound interest effect’ to many young people. I am almost sixty now and have done well, but if I had internalized this in my 20’s I would have extreme amounts of wealth at my current age. Having a lot of money allows one to do many great philanthropic things for the planet or society. It buys back the autonomy of your time to pursue the things you really love. For me I now have the time to purse my passion of coral conservation work. 😎🤙🏼

I loved the historical accoutrements regarding John D Rockefeller and standard oil! More lessons from history in future!

One of your best interviews. Such a fantastic story. Enjoyed hearing about Homestead and Lynnbrook. My kids went to Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead and Monte Vista. Brought back some good memories. Keep up the great work, Dave. Your calm, gentle and sweet disposition are a treasure. Have you left California?

If Jason Debolt and many of us shareholders have around $10 million in Tesla shares, I believe Dave Lee should have around $100 million in tsla.
