I'm no expert, but I am a student of Sun Tzu. My guess this started out as a feint. A distraction while Ukraine plots or engages in an oblique attack somewhere else. Then they got inside Russia and found they were a pushover, so they started rampaging around causing as much damage as they could. I'll be curious to see what happens in the next month or two.

Putin is correct that this incursion is partially about improving Ukraine's negotiating position. (Of course it also forces Russia to divert resources away from their ongoing offensive.) Some version of a ceasefire will be negotiated this winter. The facts on the ground matter in such talks and Ukraine is trying its best to change the narrative from what we've seen in recent months.

I think it’s all mostly a spectacle trying to keep support for a dying cause that could never be won. This war is only about baiting Russia into depleting their military capabilities and stockpiles in order to lessen the threat to Europe at the expense of Ukraine. Aside from occupation of the power plant, what goals can be achieved by this military move? I think aside from the POWs as negotiation bargaining chips, it’s wasting equipment and manpower for little to no gains. So they slapped Putin in the face. Look what it’s costing. Ukraine wants more equipment and yet wastes it on making a media statement and sacrificing their men.. I don’t support stupidity.
