However, Mathis, Kelly, Bolton, etc. had the opportunity to issue public statements at key points in Trump's presidency (after they left the administration) to weaken support in America for a transparently unfit and dangerous person. Yes, it is complicated to do so, but simply serving as President does not mean fitness for being the President (Trump's own default self-justification was that he occupied the position). The greatest possible damage to America is that something unacceptable would be accepted. It instead needed to be called out publicly.

Years ago I had the privilege of working with a man who had been a dispatch courier for the 1st Cdn Army in Normandy. He had been in an advancing column that came under German shelling. His motorcycle was flung into the air and landed in front of a Sherman Tank! The last thing he saw before he passed out was the front of the sloping track over his head! Thanks in part to a muddy dirt road he survived, but even with months in hospital he walked with a limp and had very little use of his right arm! Despite his injuries he learned how to write with his left hand, got an engineering degree, married and made a life for himself! Compare that to poor Trump with his bone spurs!

The worst thing about this guy is people having to explain why it's awful that he treats people like this. Look, I don't care how someone got catastrophically injured, it's messed up if I'm ashamed to be seen with them. If it's a veteran who was wounded in a war zone, the guy who's in charge of current activity duty service members really doesn't need to have that attitude. It's just extra icing on the evil cake. I don't have to be a person who grew up in an air force town (I am), the niece of two Vietnam era Marines or the granddaughter of two men who fought in WWII to understand that and neither should anyone else. It's exhaustingly awful that this draft dodger from a family of draft dodgers gets to make us have this conversation. It's a matter of basic human decency not to crap on people who died defending their country or were injured defending their country. The fact that we are even having this conversation is ridiculous and sad. Say you don't want to serve (I didn't) or you don't understand. That's fine. But when you're such a vile human that you need to denigrate people for loving something or someone more than themselves you're cracked in the head. When you openly mock someone with more balls and integrity than you, you're Donald Trump piling on John McCain. Dude is a walking cesspool. I didn't vote for McCain, but the idea of seeing him as anything other than a good man whose politics i disagreed with never occurred to me. 45 is just tragically amoral.

Don't make a hero out of John Kelly for doing this. Why didn't he come forward when those things happened? Why didn't he at least resign in protest or as a matter of principle?
