note : hwasa is the one who wrote the song its her story .basically maria is hwasa baptismal name , and yes shes talking to her self , saying how much shes beautiful and strong and hinting at how haters only target her behind screens or articals , also if you noticed theres a scene where she was holding scissors as we moomoos understood may be she was thinking of hurting herself but at the end of the video we see the mamamoo membres her saviors in a way .. someone will explain more as I am bad at doing so lol , theres also symbolism in the milky bath because hwasa used to get a lot of hate based on her darker tone of skin (than the korean standards ) as if they wanted to weighten her , also the people taking pictures of her when something bad happpened to her ( death at the start ) it's a good reminder for herself that shes worth more than what those ignorant have to say about her .

So, Hwasa has been one of the most attacked female artists in the history of kpop in my opinion. Female artists go through a lot of judgement and criticism, and some other aspects added to the fact she's been targeted more. She's been attacked for her skin colour, her weight and body type, her attitude, and her wardrobe choices. And actually, she addressed all of these in the video. Maria is her baptism name, and I think she used it here to keep reminding herself to be the good person she always is. The bath represents a couple of aspects, one of them is her skin colour, she's always been attacked for it, and I think she's sometimes struggled with the thought and maybe wished it could be changed (You can see the bathtub is filled with white milk at one point). Also, the funeral I think is her struggle between being who she is, which keeps being attacked and killed and who everyone wants her to be. The whole buffet scene is people eating her, sounds gross a bit, but in the plates are a heart, some sprinkles and colours and other aspects of who she thinks she is, and everyone is disgusted with them but they're still eating, which represents how people attack her. Also, in the scene where she's attacked by flying things, she's being attacked by pencils or words, which lead her to go through mental issues. The song is to her and everyone going through the same things to always remember to be good and strong, to not let anything get you down, and that's you're always beautiful no matter how you look, what you wear, and what your skin color is.

Hwasa wrote and composed Maria which btw is her catholic name. She also wrote the storyboard for the MV. "maria" is actually about hwasa's struggles and her talking herself (and others) up about it. "lmm" (short for 'lost my mind') on the same album is also worth checking out, but it's... very much not a dance track, though it's an exceptionally powerful song with an equally powerful message funny that you mention 'like a movie' since one of her inspirations for the mv is an italian movie called 'malena' about a woman whose story has a lot of similarities to hwasa's. the scene with the lighters is directly from that movie and the scenes with the scissors quite likely reference it as well, as potentially does the version of her with red hair, the 'life' hwasa as opposed to the 'death' hwasa (she named two teasers for this 'vite' and 'morte') as others have pointed out, maria is also her baptismal name and she has it tattooed on the back of her neck. there's also wordplay in the lyrics because some korean phrases sound like 'maria'. a korean explained that way better than i ever could over on dkdk tv unfortunately, hwasa injured her back while practicing this choreo right before the song dropped so she wasn't able to give it her all in the livestages (you can sometimes see the pads on her back in some of those) but if you didn't know that it can be hard to notice (dancers notice she's a bit stiff in those performances, then find out why... and can't believe she's doing it injured like that)

Hwasa(and the others) has so much confidence and she's so beautiful both inside and out. Mamamoo members always get hate for not being the "gold standard" that K-Pop idols are supposed to be physically. Korean netizens always go after them and say they're ugly. It may get to them but they never let it show. It just seems to fuel them, they use it and perform with such confidence and power that it just brings out how beautiful they all are.

For me Hwasa's Maria EP was the most impactful album of 2020. This song and MV are absolutely brilliant and they capture so much about her as an artist and a person. My favorite song on the album is LMM (Lost My Mind) and the MV is a gorgeous, cinematic masterpiece. The whole EP is perfectly sequenced and it's one of Mamamoo's most cohesive, well-planned and executed albums. Don't miss LMM and give the album a listen when you get a chance. 😄

Of the 4 Mamamoo recent singles (Spit it Out, Eclipse, Maria & Water Color) I've listened to this one the most. I've gone back to Solars recently and Wheein's I personally like the most and all the love to Moonbyl. This one strikes the hardest in terms of expression and Hwasa as always, to me, been the one most comfortable in front of a camera, even though she might be the most reclusive member of the group. okay so the whole lighting up the cigarette scene was directly mirroring a scene from the movie Malena- in the movie, Malena is a black haired girl who is a subject of jealousy for women and an object to be sexualised for men. after a certain point the hatred and insults get too much for her to handle and she longs for a change. she decides to cut her hair and dye it red. afterwards we see her walking down a street with men passing objectifying remarks to each other and women throwing shade and calling her a slut. she sits down and puts a cigarette between her lips and all the men hold up their lighter in hopes that she'd choose them. in both the scenarios, the people never changed but what did was her confidence as she realised not to give a shit abt what ppl thought of her as the only person that was significant in her life was herself. and in the music video we can see that black haired hwasa "dies" and then is reincarnated with red hair. "maria maria- these words are for you- "maria maria, neol wihan mariya its a shining night bitnaneun bamiya dont torture yourself" neol goereopijima" these lyrics can be seen as a letter from the black haired hwasa to the red haired hwasa (maria is her baptismal name) (also the biblical references are very prevalent- the T pose/cross pose in the beginning symbolised ppl literally and figuratively crucifying her for whatever she does and also her dying then getting reincarnated as redhead hwasa)

During the dance-break she actually collapsed while practicing, a week before her comeback shows etc, she was hospitalized + couldn't move for a day and even barely walk two days before she did the shows, yet she sung live and did the whole choreo so well when performing
