I helped out a record store years ago and the local radio station would dump off their promos on a weekly basis. I was able to get alot of them and still have quite a few. I do like finding gold stamp promos and I'll add, I think if one has the call letters on them, it adds some character and a story to them.

Timing is everything. Well done on the grails. I would've done a lot of damage in that gentleman's home. Let Love Rule is one of my favorite albums of all time. In my opinion, it's a masterpiece. While everybody else was eager to jump on the digital bandwagon, Lenny and his multi talented engineer Henry, took a step back and recorded on an old deck. Doolittle is another favorite of mine.

The radio station at Iowa State University lost their storage space about 10 years ago and held a fundraiser. They didn't sell their records, they took donations for their records. Suggested donation was $1 for the first record and $0.25 each record after that. I bought 3-400 at that point. Many still sealed, many with well-used sleeves but mint vinyl. The best part is, I was able to score the actual records that were being played when I was an undergrad - the actual copies that turned me onto this music in the first place. Indie pressings of Uncle Tupelo's No Depression, Soul Asylum, the Replacements, School of Fish, the Posies, Toad the Wet Sprocket...so many great albums. Plus some sealed hair bands, lots of good blues and jazz. An almost complete Nick Lowe catalog, lots of John Hiatt....great stuff.

Great video Tim and interesting story about your listening tastes back when! Bob Mould is one of the great songwriters. The 'Workbook' album is a winner and so is 'Black Sheets of Rain' that Mould recorded in 1990. The guitars are turned way up on that one. PIxies are an entity unto themselves both on record and live. 'Doolittle' is a must listen. Because things were moving so fast in alternative music in the late 1980s it is incredible to consider that 'Doolittle' came out one year after the Sonic Youth masterpiece 'Daydream Nation'. What a great time to be alive!

I like how you alluded to how the industry identified lackadaisical Djs in shirking their responsibilities in identifying the artists, and tracks that were popular at that time. It marks an interesting contrast to today’s instant Shazam identification Process. Interesting 🌹

I just watched a documentary titled “New Wave: Dare To Be Different” about WLIR, the first new music only radio station in the US. They were breaking new wave bands before anyone in the early 80s. I was obsessed with WLIR and even mounted a large FM antenna on the roof of my parents house in NJ to get their Long Island based weak signal better.

That's an interesting story with the When You Play It Say It stickers. I think I saw one of those one-time on an LP cover but I thought it was just a label hype for the specific album. I never had heard of that story and I didn't know about the 1989 era music slump in the industry. Of course we all know it could not have been the record label's fault haha. Yeah right! But definitely an interesting story. Let's just blame the DJs for the record and music sales slump 🙄 Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

I would check other records stamped as "promo" to see they were also pressed on translucent or unmarked Quiex II vinyl.

I worked with many DJs from the 60s & 70s. Promo music was the fringe benefit. Record companies and station management knew it because DJs made very little money.

Killer Pixies “Doolittle”, Tim. I’m a bit obsessive with collecting Pixies vinyl. That particular pressing really does sound crazy good. Beats the UK and MoFi, IMO. It’s basically a WLP, just a brown label…A BLP? I sent a lot of my Pixies stuff to Patrick, and.I think the rip he did of that particular promo Doolittle is still on his channel. It sounds fantastic. First time I saw them live was on the Doolittle tour. Great stuff, Tim! Thanks! 🔊⭐️🎶

Awesome Collection! silly question here - why is there a tiny bite or chip taken out of the record sleeve? I have a few of those on some of my sleeves..!
@Universityofvinyl4 ай бұрын
Those are saw cuts - labels did that when sending out promo copies so they couldn’t be returned to shops for a refund.

What is up with the saw cut on a promo record. The cut means a cut out bin albums. Several promos I have seen have a large sticker on the cover. I have a Yardbirds promo I found at a church sale cheap in used condition.
@Universityofvinyl4 ай бұрын
The Record Labels put the saw cut in most promos sent out to DJs, etc. so that they couldn't be returned to a record store for a refund. They were easily identified as promo copies. Different labels used different Promo Hype stickers/stamps.

Having just turned 41 and got laid off, I'm at a turning point. With 425K saved for early retirement at 50, 10K in an HSA, and a property that could sell for an extra 200K, what are my options for investing aggressively?
@ronniewilliams-g2224 ай бұрын
It makes sense to consider a financial advisor at this stage, but delaying retirement might be a smarter choice
@drREGANBRUENGER-66874 ай бұрын
Not going back to work. I'm unsure whether to consolidate all my investment accounts into one. If I do, how should I handle it and what should I be aware of? I also plan to sell my property, which could bring in an extra 200K over time. Should I combine everything into one account or spread it out across different investments?

She’s been managing the investment with our approval and has helped us recover twice our losses. Currently hodl’ing steady and cautiously navigating the market
