Here's (PART 2)DIY 🌴Geodesic Dome Greenhouse🌴
kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2i2nJ6tZcyqiKs
I have been using a Geodesic Dome Greenhouse for several months now to get a jump on the growing season. Only problem is it cost me $2500. Why can't a simple dome be constructed for much less using inexpensive pvc materials and repurposed items? IT CAN BE DONE ON THE CHEAP!
In this video, i show you how to construct a DIY Do It Yourself Geodesic Dome Greenhouse and only spend $83.04. You can use a free trampoline from craigslist or facebook classifieds and then buy less than $85 in materials to build a sturdy, wind tolerant frame. It's a quick and easy build that a novice can handle. Don't forget NEXT WEEK i will release Part 2 where we cover it with plastic and add a door, secure it to the ground and most important, MAKE IT SELF WATERING.
Here's what you need:
1 trampoline (i used a 14' model)
(15) 1" PVC
(3) 1/2" PVC
(3) SCH 40 cross tees
3/8 x 6 carriage bolt w/ 2 washers, lock washer, nut
some pvc glue
odds and ends screws

FYI : A University tested plastic sheet greenhouses and found that by placing a 55 gallon barrel full of water inside the greenhouse it would absorb heat in the day and release it at night to prevent freezing. You paint the barrel black for more heat absorption.

Metal barrel, or plastic?

@@enermaxstephens1051 I think plastic. Metal is problematic. If you paint the plastic barrels black they absorb solar heat more efficiently. Plastic doesnt rust and are indestructable to everything but fire.

Years ago I made a Yurt for under $700 and thought I could get the cost down a lot more if I used PVC instead of wood. This is a start to a nomadic home that could be completed for *real cheap*. Thanks for this video.

This reminded me of the day I looked at my eight sided PVC pipe kiddie pool, which had just ripped, and wondered what to do with the frame and legs. I took it apart and scattered it on the lawn and moved the pieces around like DNA. It came to me to create a house shaped structure . I had a piece of PVC under my sink just big enough to cut into pieces that fit perfectly as straight connections for the pipes. I had the elbows from the pool for corners. It made a little greenhouse structure. And since I have no talent for this kind of thing, I felt like it was some kind of miracle that I had such a perfect outcome. I think a real geodesic dome would be so fun to make.

What a great idea. If one uses this approach to build an air crete dome, one can eliminate the need for the ballon and air pump needed to inflate the dome. Essentially, one would would build a dome (using your technique) of the desired size, tarp it, spray on the air crete or foam-crete, mesh it, and repeat the process and voila, an air-crete dome home.

Another Good use for Trampolins is to dry your harvest (Tomatos for example). Its easy to clean with a pressure cleaner and the nylon fabric is really strurdy and let a lot of air thru. Good its still plastic and perhaps not the best in respect of endocrine disruptors,... but it's working and you can cover the upside with a mosquito net against flys... We used a Fan to blow and ventilate some more air inside from underneath... If youre not to close to a street and the climate is right; it's working very good! Youre welcome!

Self-tapping screws do not require pre- drilling. Just make sure you have no movement between parts when drilling through 2 pieces. Also keep it mind the size of your screw and the hardness or thickness of the metal. SD screws are the bomb when used correctly. I strongly reccomend using a hex head with an adjustable torque driver.

If you can get the grey pvc in a four-inch size, cut off a piece about 3 to 4 inches long and then drill holes in the sides into which you can insert your pvc pipe. Drill small holes in the pvc pipe and use those to attach the pipes to the hub with metal zip ties. Look at Zip Tie Domes for an example.
@christal2641
@christal2641 4 жыл бұрын
Suggestion Re hub: You could make an interior "ring" with small connectors which have 30° or 45° angles and use those to link Ts to the ribs. I see a lot of places where your outside frame connections are going to wear against the plastic cover. There is a tape you can apply to the connecting parts that prevents such wear. The cover should be 6 mil. plastic. Greenhouse catalogs carry it.

You can use a old round BQ grill for center attachment support. Drill holes around the edge. Pass the pipe through and secure them together. You can drill 2 holes a couple inches from end of pipe and then pass a wire or rope through all hoels and tie together. One would be on outside and othe would be on inside so the BQ grill would stay in place. The 2 holes only need to be 1/2" or so apart. If you could 3D print something or have someone make that instead too.

You know, the Mongolians designed really amazing toppers for their dome topped yurts called Toonos. They use a stunningly hand carved wheel pattern from lumber to design toppers that fit all the pieces together perfectly. You cannot order PVC Toonos from Lowes though. The Khazakstan ger provides a simpler way to connect the top ends. IDK, sometimes it's hard to figure out how to make the top of a dome work. The Duomo in Italy took over a hundred years to build, and the architect that planned it died without telling anyone how to finish the top. The architects that built it were all drunk and swinging in the air, not knowing what to do. They had a contest for any of the renaissance artists to find a solution. Only one person, a reject from society could figure it out. I'm impressed that you think for yourself and find creative solutions. Never limit your life's options to receipts from big box stores. Commercial worlds will always fail you in the end. I retired at 35. Then I opened a business again a month ago, and it looks like I get to quit again and runaway to the wild next month, so I am happy to know how simple it is to make a greenhouse dome in an afternoon. -Former Underpaid Disgruntled Lowe's Cashier

Brother Charles has been doing electrical work for well over 40 years, I've done construction for well over 40 years, and you're correct they do not make a four-way Gray, there's an reason based on code, you have to use a junction box, which by the way would make it look very pretty and sturdy. Yes it has four sides, with three stab holes on each side, at least four elbows at 45 degrees will be needed. This would make a great greenhouse indeed.

There are 2, 4, 6 gray electric junction boxes. They have threaded holes though and are most common in 3/4" size so you will need to glue slip to 3/4 thread adapters onto the pipes to attach them to the boxes. Hope that gives you an idea. You might get away with 2 six port boxes to make it simple.

A friend of mine built a geodesic structure similar size to this by using plastic plumbing pipe like he showed, but she carefully dipped the ends in a pan of hot oil and them squashed it flat with some pliers, then drilled holes when it had cooled. Would be able to use instead of all the Ts in this as she then attached those in the shape she wanted with nuts and bolts and it worked to make a dome. Maybe try it out.

So in regards to the center peak issue, take a piece of 3/8 plywood and cut a 12-inch disk. Then take a length of PVC that is a 1/4 inch larger than the pipe and cut 6-inch pieces and screw them to the disk so that they match with the ground and then jus glue it up. I would spray the disk with some spray paint to make it more moisture-proof

A dome, but not geodesic. They have formulas for any size geodesic dome. Using even thin steel conduit you could have ended up with a much more rigid structure, bolted together at the junction points. I doubt it would have cost $250.

@@fukkawi ...Desert Domes is one. www.desertdomes.com/domecalc.html There are others. You go to their geodesic dome calculator, you enter the radius into the box and it will instantly tell you how many struts you will need and what sizes they need to be, center of bolt hole to center of bolt hole at the other end of the strut - so, if you're using steel conduit, you cut the struts maybe 2 inches longer than the measurements and drill the holes the distance apart indicated by the dome calculator.

I also agree: A geodesic dome is specifically constructed from repetitive triangles or other polygons. But, there is some good thought into this project. A couple of thoughts: First of all, the bottom ring can be made from thin-walled 1" steel conduit and couplers that is bent into curves adequate to form into that form the desired diameter ring. A sheet metal shop would not charge much to run the straight lengths of tubing thru their bending equipment...and they would be able to calculate how much of a bend is needed to form the proper diameter circle. Second thought is that I agree that 2 x 6 way connectors would be a better idea at the top center point. With careful measuring, 3 x 4-way connectors could be cut apart with a jig-saw, such that they have 60 degree angles at the join end, and glued back together into 2 x 6-ways connectors. This were the concept of PVC glue is an advantage. Unlike most glued joints, which are weak point, pvc joints are as strong as the things glued together, because the glue literally fuses the joined parts together. However, to avoid all of this "fiddling", it is easy to find 6-way connectors online...specifically designed for actual geodesic dome construction. A quick search online will disclose some expensive ones (@$26), but also will disclose sources of more affordable "Sonostar" connectors for as little as $8.99 on Amazon.

Helpful hint, you can shape pvc by filling it up with hot play sand. Stick sand in the oven, seal one end of pipe temporarily, fill with hot sand, shape, let sand cool down, and voila.

The hub at the top you could use 5” grey pvc about a 7” or 8” tall piece. Drill your twelve holes in two rows of six each. Holes off set by 60 degrees. Top row off set by 30 degrees.

Excellent video! For the centre hub I just cut the rim off a child's bicycle wheel (free) and pushed the pvc onto the wheel spokes. Just need to find a wheel with the correct number of spokes ....
