You know the first thing I always check when renting or staying at a hotel? The AC filters! And 9 times out of 10, they have never been cleaned since they were installed! Well, they go straight into the shower and washed down as I can not think of anything worse than all the dirt and dust floating around the room! This is not just a Thai thing, I have had that in Australia and many other countries!

I first went to Chiang Mai in 1968. I returned to live there from 1984-1994. We bought a house in the Wualai Sliver-working area for $25,000US and expanded it for another $13000. The city has changed so much that it appeals to me only for a short visit but not a permanent arrangement. There is so much to see in other SEAsian areas that being locked into one place is not for me.

Randy, your videos are brilliant. I am ardently starting at the beginning and working my way through them. Your delivery and happy demeanour make watching, not just compelling, but thoroughly enjoyable. While the first budget hotel room works fine especially the patios and location and honestly the price is like what I paid in the USA for shared apartment 40 plus years ago at university there would come a time when one might want a proper bathroom or a desk to write etc. The Riverside condo's are great the $460 one is great but who wants that much space...lol Funny the views from Riverside are better than the Astra. One could start out in the budget studio for 3 months and then just shop around make a list of the necessary accoutrements e.g. luxury studio, wash machine, pool, gym etc...or whatever its all personal as you said. Fabulous job. As for Pad Thai or Pad Woon Sen I could live on that alone - a crusade to find the best beckons me thinks. Joy adds great value and like yourself is very personable. This video was extremely helpful so elucidating, especially the food I could easily live on 300 baht a day - coffee 60 baht, shake 60 baht and 3 meals 60 baht...that would be a bargain for what you get, add in a a studio room life couldn't be simpler. You then have loads of dispensable income for gyms, travel to Vietnam et al. and a good solid base to come back to - can;'t wait for the other videos - well done that man - strike that, couple!
@RetiredGlobalLife Жыл бұрын
Steven, what a nice message. Big thanks from us both. Yes, I'm not one of those drawn to the newest buildings with the smaller apartments, and I agree, the best Thai dishes are often the cheapest, and I like the simple open restaurants quite often. And your recommendation on how to start and move on after a couple months would be the right way to do it for sure.
@consulthai Жыл бұрын
Good comment,Steven. Generally speaking the older condos give you better bang for your buck . If you want to rent a car ,I know a couple of good places where you can rent one for about 15000 baht a month or about 5000 a week or about 690 a day. Including insurance and road service . Personally I prefer cars to motorbikes, safer and cooler. Randy didn't cover this. Otherwise he is spot on. There are many,many attractions here in Chiang Mai and vicinity. It's my Shangri-La.

Hey Randy I really enjoyed this. I have just returned to Sydney from 3 months in Thailand, mainly in Hua Hin. I did stay in Chiang Mai for two weeks at an Air bob in the old city and really loved it. I went to the gym everyday, the local markets and became involved with a local rugby club,. I liked the condos that you showed especially the one for B16,000 per month. Sounds good. Yes, eating out in Thailand is a lot more fun than in the US or Europe I think. Not to mention cheaper.

Great video and well put together, lots of important information. If I'm going for a nice evening out, grocery or a rainy day use the grab taxi and on bright sunny days or exploring take the motorcycle.

Thank you for this incredibly informative video. Definitely worth a sub. I have been researching and watching videos on the Philippines for months now. It really became an obsession. But today I thought I would start watching videos on Thailand. Wow! The accommodations are similarly priced, but Thailand seems to have far more modern and cleaner accommodations, better food, better healthcare, easier transportation (since not island hopping as much), better infrastructure, cheaper and more reliable internet, and I am assuming less natural disasters. I can't wait to learn more.

Thanks and I'm so glad to bring you the info. I love Thailand and all the points you raise are true. The only drawbacks is the smokey season due to crop burning when we leave for chunks of time, and the visas may be easier in Philippines.

Hi Joy and Randy. This is Charlie from Boston, USA. Commenting from Mexico where I currently live. I have been down here for two years off and on but my lease is up. I will return to Boston for some doctors n personal business but I am 60 and retired widower now. I got my sights on Chiang Mai possibly January. I am only halfway through your video but you are both a great energy and we all appreciate what you do. The apartment prices seem similar to what I’m paying in Mexico north of Puerto Vallarta. I will get back on your video. It should be interesting cost of living.!!! have a great day

Nice to hear from you, Charlie. Chiang Mai does not have the beautiful old buildings that parts of Mexico has, not counting our temples, but it is a nice lifestyle. here. A lot different than Mexico for sure, except maybe the shared heat.

@@RetiredGlobalLife I feel compelled to try Thailand. I am in the prime of my life at 60 and I want to do it while I still can. It was easy for me to get around Mexico and I picked up the language rather quickly. It made things a lot easier. I don’t feel that will be the case in Thailand lol. But I was looking at Columbia n southeast Asia before I came here to be honest. A good friend of mine from Boston has been talking about Thailand these past days and I ran into a guy at the gym today who brought it up to me and said he was moving there. My wheels are Turnin. My lease is up in Mexico. I don’t know much about the country but Chiang Mai looks like as good a place as any to start. I will check out some of your other videos. Thank you brother.

No, the changes are really minimal. I don't see most restaurant or rents changing since just a year ago. Even if so, add 5% I guess.
