HEY THERE, UNFORTUNATELY I ALREADY KNEW ALL OF THOSE WORDS AND I LEARNED THEM WHEN I FIRST CAME TO THAILAND 11 YEARS AGO BUT EVEN MORE UNFORTUNATELY THAT'S ABOUT AS FAR AS I GOT. MOST OF MY THAI FRIENDS AND THE PEOPLE I DO BUSINESS WITH SPEAK ENGLISH OR AT LEAST SOME ENGLISH. SO IT HAS NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM GETTING AROUND. I HAVE DECIDED THAT I NEED TO LEARN A LITTLE MORE THAI, SINCE I HAVE DECIDED TO SPEND THE REST OF MY LIFE HERE AND DIE HERE. THEY WILL PUT ME IN AN OVEN AND COOK ME UNTIL THERE IS NOTHING BUT ASHES LEFT..

If not for CoVid, this would have been my third year traveling to Thailand. First year, I traveled 2 times. Last year 3 times. While it will make the Thai appreciate you more if you speak their language, it’s not a problem if you can speak the English language. My generation is certainly different from the past. There are Thais who actually understand and speak English. Don’t let the language barrier prevent you from traveling anywhere in this world. Just respect the culture, and you’ll be fine. Everyone now holds a phone with language translator. The Thais are kind, patient, very welcoming, eager and helpful to anyone who needs help-even if you get lost on the streets. Beautiful girls, too. OK, be careful. Lol!!!

I would also like to add that Chris is doing an excellent job articulating all the words. However you may be confused if you hear a different version of the words taught here. More often than not the letter "r" is omitted from speech and sometimes its replaced with a "l" sound instead. Chris is saying "Krap" but you hardly hear it on the streets. Its more commonly just pronounced as Kap. Similar to "dtrong pai" (go straight) its usually spoken as "dong pai". An example of "R" replacement would be " nee keu arai krap" (which means what is this?) would sound more similar to "nee keu alai kap"

It's one of the most common mistakes that non-Thais make. They don't learn how the language actually is spoken but translate from English.
@Ulbre
@Ulbre 4 жыл бұрын
But when I am asked "Ao arai krub/ka" I am going to answer "Ao beer Chang krub". My personal experience is that the more common Thai (thus the majority) use "Ao" mainly. I'm not saying you are incorrect, I am sure you are certainly correct for your circle of peers & family. I use all three! Ao Khor Dtong garn!!
@my2cents943
@my2cents943 4 жыл бұрын
Khor is the most polite of all. It equals 'asking for sth' while Ao means 'wanting sth'. Dtong garn is quite formal and = wanting or can be used in the sense of demanding too.
@Ulbre
@Ulbre 4 жыл бұрын
and yet the majority of my 16 years living in Thailand and almost 37 years of visiting Thailand, have been in rural areas. I participate in activities with Thai's such as offroad riding(although less frequently nowadays) and chicken fighting. These are things, especially the latter, that the rural thai man will be involved with......my point is that I hardly ever hear "khor" in these situations. Now these people may be rural but they are still good Thai polite people and just because their speech isn't as formal as city folk doesn't mean they are less polite. Muay Thai is another area I imagine is similar, as it involves the rural and hard living folk who don't get the easy life on the platter........ although I'm not really into that sport so I am only guessing. As I said I use all three depending mainly who I m with. Dtong Garn I use with everyone when I want to express something I would really really like. "Yak chana huay mai krub?" "Dtong garn marg marg loei na krub" Just my take on things. Thailand is a huge country of almost 70 million people and the culture is very diverse, as is the language. there are so many sub dialects as well.
@bohem7298
@bohem7298 4 жыл бұрын
@@LearnThaiwithShelby I'm Thai ,for me when we ask to buy something we should use 'Aow' instead of 'Khor' because 'Khor' feeling like means you ask something for free. if we say' 'Khor' something from Seller they might play a joke on you by saying "this is not for free ,it's for sell".

As someone who is constantly at markets, and also not a particularly good negotiator, 'lot noi dai mai?' is a very oft-spoken phrase for me 😁

Thai is really easy. All i hear is mao mao, ting tong farang ;) Kidding. Actually tried to learn Thai and bought the 3 books and CD's made by Benjawan Poomsan Becker which are great (only maded it to the end of book 1 within 2 months). I got to know a lot of small sentences and words, and to read a little, but i realized my hearing is way to bad to recognize the different tones used in Thai. So now i just settle with the knowlegde that i can ask where the toilet is and order a little bit of food and drinks ;)
