I have a variable income job, but am able to contribute to a 401k through the employer. I can also adjust it through the year, so i try to put what I'm planning into it in the beginning of the year. And then if i can, ill put more in later in the year. So I always keep track of how much in case I can max it out later.

I was late to the HSA game. But when I started, I treated it as a savings account.

In a few instances, some employees overcontribute to the 401k when they change employers during the year. They often forget to track the amount they contributed to the 401k at the previous employer, and the current employer is unable to monitor the limit with the inclusion of the prior contribution. It takes a bit of work for the employee and administrator to fix. Thank you for posting this.

Unfortunate thing with the HSA is once u start on Medicare, u have to stop it 6 months prior to having Medicare. I was saving up but decided to go on Medicare becz my job insurance sucked and had me basically paying not only the high deductible, but also the they only paid 80 % and id still have a hefty bill with the 20% after deductible. So I had to discountinue the HSA.
