Looking north of Aplington, IA from the high ground on the south side of the town, I saw a funnel come out of a mesocyclone. It was a thin thing, but the mesocyclone had definate rotation. A month later, I saw the genesis of the Parkersburg, IA tornado. From the same location, about 2 miles to my south, I saw a rotating wall cloud, I would estimate the angular velocity at about 360 degrees every 15 seconds. It passed by and It faded with distance and the water vapor obscuring it, but I have to believe that the whole wall cloud decended to the ground and became the wedge EF5 that leveled the SE third of Parkersburg. It looked like the tornado in the vid footage of the Andover, Kansas storm, just not yet picking up anything on the ground. A week later, the main highway was reopened, I drove through. The devastation and the people in great misery is something that I will never forget/ .

We have had some absolutely incredible storms with extremely frequent severe/intense lightning strikes, but little rain or wind. Thankfully, they are fairly rare. Is there no classification for those? (Back in the 60's we called them electrical storms.)

No, you just need to take a short NOAA SKYWARN course. :) www.weather.gov/skywarn/ ⛈🌪⚡️

tod hodgkin: Unless requirements have changed, you don't need a college degree to qualify as a storm spotter... check online for the local schedule at your local NWS Forecast Office.

Here is a list of the upcoming SKYWARN classes offered by the Corpus Christi NWS office. www.weather.gov/crp/skywarn Furthermore, I would check out the Corpus Christi NWS site here: www.weather.gov/crp/ and get your parents to help you find a contact number for more information. While you're at it, study up for your ham radio technician license. There are plenty of resources and online practice tests out there such as aa9pw.com/radio/ . You're young and only have to worry about school at this point so you've got plenty of time to put towards these first steps. Find a local ham radio club that participates in SKYWARN seek them out and ask questions. Get involved, go visit your local NWS office, take the tour and tell the forecasters in there that you're interested in weather spotting. All these people have a passion for weather and radio and would be more than willing to help you get involved in these things that they themselves enjoy. If you still have trouble getting involved or finding a contact or someone to help you in your area, shoot me a message through youtube, I'll help the best that I can. Best of luck to you!
