Retortable flexible containers are laminated food packages able to withstand the time and temperature processing of canned food. The term ‘retort pouch’ is used to describe a flexible or semi-rigid package made from heat-resistant laminated plastic, into which food products are placed, sealed and sterilized at temperatures up to 121°C. The resulting product is then sterile and shelf-stable. The retort pouch has been developed as an alternative to metal and glass for packaging of processed food products.
Products packed and processed in retort¬able flexible containers are shelf-stable and offer the convenience of refrigerated or frozen boil-in-the-bag products. The materials for flexible containers must provide good barrier properties for a long shelf-life, seal integrity, toughness and puncture resistance, and must also withstand the rigors of thermal processing.
