A great retouched image begins with a beautiful photograph. We're going to take a reasonable photo that I shot in late 2013 on a rainy day in Philadelphia and use Photoshop to do some simple retouching and color toning to this image. We're going to explore things like skin and eye retouching as well as effectively using Adjustment Layers to color grade and create a very cool looking picture.

The best part of this tutorial is the numerous sub techniques if that makes sense or rather the principles involved for a lot of your own work for different results. Great stuff. Thanks

I could say all sorts of proper fancy things, but I'll just say, I FREAKING LOVE YOU MAN! I am one of those very stubborn people who refuses to follow instructions, there for its taken me a million years to learn many things I now know, (not the best way to go about it since photography is my full time job.) In any event, I'm glad I decided to put my pride aside for a good bit, and, well, I am very grateful. Wonderful tutorial, and fantastic techniques.

This single video changed my whole approach to retouching. I use gradient maps in almost every image now and have a bunch of gradients saved for different looks. When people ask me how I got a certain look I always point them to this tutorial and tell them to experiment with gradients and different colors in their shadows. Thanks Nathaniel!

Imagine the hours of work you could save by just lighting it properly and selecting the correct aperture to start with. This is a great advert for the power of adjustment layers but it honestly comes across as digital masturbation. This look is easily achieved in 5-6 layers in a third of the time, and while it may be fun to play with an image for 30 minutes, try that on 300 images, that the AD needs tomorrow morning for a presentation.

+James Eisele I would think this much editing is to teach you how to edit.. the image he's editing makes no difference, it's about learning at this point, not starting off at the top.

Don't listen to this guy, kids. If you shoot 300 images in a single day, this tutorial is not for you. This is for someone who does photography as a form of art. This may be not the absolute best tutorial out there, but it's pretty damn good. I specifically liked the grain trick. Will definitely be using it myself a lot. Many other nice tips here too.

I just watched the video for the 3rd time, while playing along on my own pic. This tutorial is just so much more! The exact oposit of "how to change your eye color in photoshop". Artistic, with a deep understandig... Love it.

This was SO helpful. This is obviously not for those who want to edit 300 pictures in one day -- I think they're better off using presets and actions. But for those of us who don't use presets/actions and want to develop that "fine art photography" style, this had a couple of very helpful techniques. Thanks so much!

You have changed my view of editing photos. This is amazing. I typically don't touch them other than a some curves and done (which has major impact) but adding colors, dodging and burning. So many examples of editing go so badly. Thank you for this video and explaining your perspective of editing.

This is def a good way to see how adjustments actually work. I know when I was in school I wasn't really taught how to work with adjustments I was taught the pen tool five times and I hate the pen tool and never use it. I learned how to use adjustments all on my own.

How did you get that crazy flare with the "holes" in it?? On a side note: Did KZbin do something with the video compression? I get a lot of artifacts on the bits of the video that are faster moving...
@Gex9z
@Gex9z 8 жыл бұрын
+SeamusHarper1234 He must've used a one-pass encode with a low bitrate. For videos with lots of non-moving parts and sudden movement (like this one), a two-pass encode is recommended, no matter how high a bitrate you're using. On the other hand YT might be the one to blame.
