In this PART 2 of my short high-end retouching series (tutorial), I will show you how to use dodge and burn in Photoshop, and create smooth and polished skin. By evening out the transitions between the lights and shadows, we will be able to retouch even problematic skin to the high end results. I will show you how to use curves adjustment layers and layer masks to do just that.
Hope you will enjoy it!

Thank you so much. I also use the similar idea of fixing the light and shadow when I use the spot healing brush. I find to heal the different between shadow and highlight of the issues give more natural finished than remove the whole area. It left the skin texture more natural.

This is mind blowing. I use frequency separations but I just realized the way I work on the high pass layer with my clone stamp is the same way you use dodging and burning. I end up breaking up the texture with bumps when I could just be dodging and burning. Lol. Ty!

Very inspiring, thank you. Can you tell me please why you use dodge & burn rather than frequency separation? -Carmen

I think is because with dodge and burn you are not acttually affecting the skin texture, so the result is a more polished look. What I actually do sometimes is doing the DB and the Frequency Separation for the final touches for blending the a little bit better the color from different face areas (cheek to nose, nose to forehead, etc) but most of the time DB will be enough :D

What Bryan said. Its less destructive, more natural and overall more suitable for skin, as frequency separation mix the colours which ultimately kills all the natural micro details in the skin.

Great job! What a patience you have! How long did it take in real-life time? About 30 minutes of DB? Would you use this technique if you had to edit 20 portraits from the same shooting?

Beautiful results Vera - a clear demonstration of how you work! I appreciate the meticulous brush strokes demonstrated before speeding up. What are your brush settings during this Dodge and Burn process? You replied previously to another viewer that you rely on pen pressure so you must be using "shape dynamics". What about; "transfer", or "smoothing" as setting for your brush? What about "spacing"? You already mentioned low hardness because it has little effect. Also, you used a second set of curves for D&B. Did you increase the strength of this second set of curves - is that why the second set was required? Thanks so much!

Thanks for the comment! I’ll only answer the last part as this is really a long and very in deth conversation that can’t be fit into a comment. Second DB curves were added as there’s only so much so you can do with onw set - it will go only as far as you set it up. And sometimes there are deeper problems or you need to work more on some areas, hence the second set of layers. But they have the exact same settings like the first ones.

Thank you! Useful as always. Do you use a tablet for retouching? If yes, what settings do you suggest to pay attention to while DB? Thank you )

Thank you! Yes I use Wacom retouching tablet. I have my pen pressure turned on for transfer so harder i press the bigger effect it will give me and other way around.

This isnt working for me ! I tired to go along with you . But when i dodge and burn and returning to original it looks like more damaged rather than smoothing . I tried this on a jpg file so that might be the problem . But looking forward to learn ♥️

It really takes time to do it correctly. The "trick" is to train your eyes to see the little changes in luminosity and that will come with practice doing the DB technique. For jpeg maybe is a little more difficult since there's lack of information but not impossible. Keep doing it :)
