Justin Pearson has been one of the most prolific musicians in the hardcore scene, playing in bands like seminal noise and powerviolence bands like Swing Kids, the Crimson Curse, Some Girls, and of course, the Locust. He is currently screaming like a madman as the frontman for the Southern California-based Retox. Pearson and the rest of the band walked us through the road they took to Retox and the meaning of being a "lifer."

Ido understand hard music,I had a shaved head and DMs by the age of 12,1982 so just saw the arse end of UK Punk and then got into Hard Dance Music in the Rave scene in the late 80s but I think this sounds crap,I know nothing about the structure of a song but this seems to be missing something,is it Melody?

That's funny, because I think Retox was actually one of the more catchy and accessible bands to play this type of music because of all the melodic DK-ish guitar lines they'd use in a lot of their songs.The very fact that you'd begrudge a hardcore band for lacking "melody" though makes me doubt that you really do understand hardcore. People like you are under the impression that you like the "good" hardcore bands, but in truth you only like the bands who include elements that are palatable to linear-minded mainstream music fans who are trained by pop music to listen to vocals first, music second. It's the same reason why Dillinger Escape Plan never really took off until they started structuring their songs around melodic choruses instead of the mindblowing tightly-wound guitar interplay they had on earlier albums - most people are cornballs who are totally lost if a band doesn't include melodic vocals and choruses.
