Hello, I reported this story and wanted to share some of the details for transparency. What exactly happened before Mr. Arbery was tragically killed was subject to speculation and was fueling division. I was curious about what the leaked videos really showed, and if there was a way to retrace what happened. I'll explain the timestamp reporting because it revealed an important detail for the first time - that Mr. Arbery was pursued by three men in two vehicles for close to 4 minutes. My colleague Richard Fausset, who is based in Georgia, obtained the 911 calls placed on Feb. 23. The calls had timestamps in the file names - an important detail. He also obtained the 911 text log for that day, and the times more or less lined up - a 10 second difference, which would be accounted for the dispatcher typing the notes. The timecode stamped into on the security footage was wrong, but what we see lined up with what we hear in the 911 audio - when the first 911 call was placed and ended, when that caller said Mr. Arbery began to run. This allowed us to correct the time on the security camera. The second 911 call also had a correct timestamp in the file name and at the end of that call, you can hear a police siren. The time the siren is heard matches the time in the security footage we see a police cruiser speeding past 219 Satilla Drive to the crime scene. So this established a continuity between the two 911 calls and the security video. But what about the video of the fatal shooting? In it, we hear three gunshot blasts. In between the first and second blast, Gregory McMichael is heard to faintly shout "Travis!" in the distance. This sounded very familiar to the "Travis!" that is screamed into the cellphone and recorded by the 911 call. I measured the audio waveforms, and lined up the audio for both, and the timing between the first shotgun blast and "Travis!" matched, as well as the siren we already lined up, and the duration of "Travis!". What's more, the police logs also showed that the second 911 call was placed from Travis McMichael's number, and was routed through a nearby cell tower. It lasted 4:46 and there was only one window in time that it could have been placed and matched those events. So this was certainly Gregory McMichael, Travis's father speaking to 911 as Mr. Arbery was killed. The police officer who sped to the scene took Gregory McMichael's testimony, and that allowed us to sketch what happened during those fateful four minutes. William "Roddie" Bryan and his attorney have also issued statements to the media, and that allowed us to fill in more details. Finally, breaking down the gruesome video frame by frame, and comparing it to the autopsy report, allowed us to understand what was happening more closely. The first shot was fired into Ahmaud Arbery's chest very quickly. The coroner declared him dead around 30 minutes after this. This is a tragic story and we hope our reporting provides some clarity on what happened. Our sympathies to the Arbery family. Malachy.

Yes, it is a tragic end, and an even more tragic cause of division amongst people. So much of the previous reporting and footage did not give a clear time frame and even speculated that it was not Arbery who was in the house that day. This is much clearer, but obviously still messy. My sympathies to his family.

I'd be careful with your wording at 3:01 Ahmaud Arbery did not "run off" as fast as your video depicts. Why speed up the video to make it look as if he's sprinting out the house? He was just jogging away.

Marquis Simmons, I was imagining the same thing, he could have tossed up that gun to pops. Sooo true! Soooo True! But you know, this thing was pre-planned. I'm sure that's going to come out. Travis called 911 two weeks before the shooting. His voice was shaky and scared. He said that the man could have been reaching for a gun in his back pocket. But you know he could have been reaching for a cell phone. The operator asked, are you ok? Because Travis was so shooken up. He described the guy as a light skinned black man. It wasn't Arbery. So does Travis get scared of white people and kids at the house? Reaching in their back pocket? Does Travis get scared at the grocery store when a black man reaches in his back pocket for his cell phone? Nope. Travis was recording his, "fear" on a 911 call so that when he finally shot the light skinned black man he could say, see I told you that I was scared of him because he could have had a gun. That's why I got trigger happy and shot him. But that wasn't going to work since Arbery was a different man.

I think it's premeditated too. Here's a comment I left to someone else. Someone said, they knew he wasn't armed so fat boy should have tossed up is gun to pops and did a man to man fight. But that wasn't the purpose of the whole event.

Not trolling, not virtue signaling, serious question: How can the idea of citizen arrest and the idea of self-defense be squared with each other? Putting aside the details of this incident, I think that most people think that, if they believe that a crime is happening or recently happened, then they can physically intervene to some degree to prevent it or to subdue and detain the suspected person for police. But the reasonableness of decision will depend on what others (police, prosecutor, and judge) decide long afterwards. Until that decision is made, the legality of such a vigilante moment can just as easily be defined as kidnapping, followed by murder. Although reckless, I think that most people believe that everyone has the right to physically defend themself from armed men trying to kidnap them, and if those armed civilians shoot you for resisting them, then you have been murdered. So, how can society have any clear "rules of engagement," so to speak, when these mutually exclusive ideas lead to such absurd situations?

It's no wonder some people have different views of this and I think it's a psyop to get people to focus on something else besides illegally being under house arrest. I don't mean this killing is fake, but the way the media is handling it and maybe editing the audio/video times to make people outraged, see different things, and to fight each other.

It's not even slightly believable. And then, when he knew he did something wrong he decided to assault the ONE man who was closest to him by punching him in the head. If you actually think that punching someone who has not put their hands on you is okay then you deserve whatever comes your way also. Because if you touch me or my family member, I'm protecting us. From the video that I have seen for cops to initially let them go would seem reasonable. Remember, Ahmaud went after their guns when they were trying to detain him and that made it a life and death situation and a self defense. The 4 fellows who commented above me either don't know the laws or are in denial. Misdemeanor trespassing doesn't rise to citizen's arrest stipulations. Plus they didn't catch him "red handed" at the property of his "crime", neither can they legitimately chase &attempt to stop someone not posing a danger or actively committing a crime. Deadly force is beyond the focus of citizen's arrest too. The McMichaels appointed themselves posse, broke some technical rules, and lost control of the situation. They put themselves into a conflict they escalated, they had the guns, they did the chasing while sidestepping rules,...that's why that state brought charges.

He shot at him before Ahmaud grabbed the shot gun, it's obvious and clear from the video. That was the first shot we hear. Having been relentlessly pursued by men with guns, with one finally blocking your path while holding a shot gun, Ahmaud reacts as anyone in this situation would - he makes a desperate attempt to fight for his life by disarming his aggressor. What were his other options? To run keep running? That hasn't been working. And now it's perfectly reasonable for him to assume that should he choose to run away, he could be shot in the back. This unarmed man, who at no point showed a weapon, who at no point was a threat to them in any way whatsoever, is left with no other option. He's shot again. He is severely injured now and weakened. At this point, McMichael is in every position to create distance between himself and Ahmaud. He is intact, able-bodied and still holding his rifle. At the very least, he could have flung his rifle away from both of them and tackled Ahmaud to the ground. That is, if he had any interest in preserving his Ahmaud's life. But he didn't. He never did, from the very beginning. And so he shoots him yet again, and this is the fatal shot. Watch his body language as he walks away after killing him. It's unhurried, casual. He is not even winded. He doesn't run back to see if his victim is alive, if he's ok, if there's any chance of saving him after this "citizens arrest" goes horribly wrong. He does not care. There is no concern. There never was.

It is a really important point to bear in mind that Arberry was shot before he attempted to grab the gun as there can be no justifiable self defense case made if someone has chased and shot someone who was defenseless and not threatening them. This was murder and a racist lynching, pure and simple. It is as well justice has been served in this case, that one feared it might not speaks volumes for the problems of justice black people face in America, but the wider issues of police corruption and attempts to cover up this crime, why Arberry was left dying while the police casually chatted with and failed to apprehend the people who shot him and the issue of white suprematist violence remain.

Well the father himself said that his son had to shoot Arbery "in his d**n chest" (in his discussion with the police). So they did not at all regret the murder, and were obviously expecting to be found not guilty. But God is good and He gave a symbolic victory!

@trose5507 2 жыл бұрын
@joolenka you nailed it. Very well-written account(s) of Arbery's murder. Now, the shooter is guilty on all charges since he's the one that actually shot the victim. His father is guilty on all but one count, since the father of the murderer did not shoot the victim. Finally, "Roddie" thought he would get-off being accountable in this murder since he was the director of the recording and submitted the recording. This is where God comes in at...the recording of the murder was leaked and thanks to social media, the recording of the murder was shared over and over. The relentlessness of humans who had watched the recording of the murder knew this murder needed the attention from the right people who represents true justice. The irony in all this, thanks to one of the three stooges, "Roddie," recorded their doom. Consequently, The STATE of GEORGIA delivered JUSTICE! #greatpostjoolenka
@fashe55
@fashe55 2 жыл бұрын
Your account of what happened is exactly what the video showed. It was murder, clear and simple. Travis pointed his gun at Ahmaud who then ran to the other side of the truck to avoid him. Yet Travis moved to the front of the car to get a clearer view of Ahmaud who was obviously trying to continue running away from them. That move to the front, as the prosecutor explained in the closing, could not have been to avoid Ahmaud, it was to confront him. He moved closer, not further away, from Ahmaud. That was a move of an aggressor, not a defensive move. Ahmaud would have seen him move to the new position with the gun in his hand, likely still pointing at him. What did that tell Ahmaud? We heard the first shot as Ahmaud emerged in front of the truck, towards Travis. It’s fight or flight at this point. Remember, he had been running away from them for 5 minutes, exhaustion must be kicking in. Roddie Bryan said in the clip of his interview with the police straight after the incident that Ahmaud was getting tired running, who wouldn’t? Exhaustion meant fight was better than flight and who’s to say flight would not result in being shot in the back? Travis was certainly poised to be able to do that. Why did he move towards Ahmaud rather than further away from him if not to get a clearer shot? He was angry that Ahmaud would not obey his order to stop and was determined to impose his will on the poor guy who had no obligation to obey any order from him. How could this be self defense? The only one able to claim self defense, had he lived, was Ahmaud. Very clearly, Travis was the aggressor, and in many ways, he escalated the situation instead of backing away. Ahmaud posed no threat to him so there was no reason to defend himself from Ahmaud. Rather, he created reason for Ahmaud to need to defend himself from him. We thank the jury for doing a great job, God bless them!

I agree there was no compassion for human life after the man was killed. Also, not even taking them down to the station was bad, and suggests straight up corruption. The problem is that Ahmaud just kept running which suggested to them that he was doing so for a reason, and attacking the gunman by punching him in the head on video and trying to take the gun from him was pretty much self defense at that point, from both perspectives. It's not abnormal for people involved in self defense shootings to be questioned on the scene and then released. Especially when there is multiple witnesses and video evidence of the shooting. Also there's not much you can do for first aid after someone has been shot twice in the chest from close range with a shotgun. The pellets are dispersed and will enter, tear through the lungs, and even exit the back side of the body... causing massive blood loss and filling the lungs and intra-abdominal space. Never mind the likely heart damage. The proper follow up actions taught are to check for weapons and then provide any possible first aid. It would have been apparent in flipping him over there was nothing that could be done for him. And think about it, if it were you in your final moments would you want to be left alone or die with the people who just shot you leaning over you pointlessly pressing down on your chest? Also, he didn't start running when he saw people pursuing him with guns. He began running as he was exiting the house under construction...likely because he heard or saw the unarmed guy walking up on his cellphone talking to 911. If you watch the video released by the guardian of another interaction with the police where they attempted to taze him, he was displaying a serious attitude problem and a dangerous and threatening behavior in his interaction with even the police. Firearms are distance weapons, if you run up into someone's personal space while they're holding one, and especially if you attempt to snatch the weapon from them: you can expect that person to shoot you in self defense.

How is it "unclear if this is Arbery", referring to the man in the house in security camera videos? Did Arbery have long hair and a tattoo covering his entire upper left arm? If yes then its probably him. If no then its definitely not him.

@adiamondsmile THEN MAYBE TELL THEM TO REPORT IT WHEN THE SECURITY CAMERA VIDEO CAME OUT. THEY ALREADY HAVE HIS DEAD BODY SO WHY NOT DISMISS IF IT WAS OR WASNT HIM, RIGHT AWAY INSTEAD OF LETTING GROUPS WITH ULTERIOR MOTIVES USE IT TO DEBATE AND PUSH THEIR AGENDA? LAZY REPORTING, AND YOURE A DUMB DUMB THAT ALLOWS THIS

It doesn't matter if it's him or not. They had no right to shoot an unarmed man.

@@seanfox4551 I think you're probably right, but we don't know and people need to stop acting like they do know. Why was he running towards two guys with guns instead of away from them? Why did he grab the shotgun the one guy had? Did he grab the shotgun before the first shot? We can't tell because they were both behind the car. If he was just plain shot then yes, it was murder. If he was grabbing the shotgun before the first shot then no, it wasn't murder, it was self defense. These are a lot of simple questions that we just don't know the answer to and if it weren't a black man being shot by a white man, no one would be jumping to conclusions but people are because they want it to be a race thing. I mean FFS, people are calling for the arrest of the person who filmed what was happening from an unrelated car. If that person had been black, people would be cheering him but because he's white, they want him arrested? "We don't know" is the truth, and all these people out for blood are just as bad as the man who shot Arbery. They want two dead white men without knowing what happened, without knowing if it was justified. They don't care. How many of these people marching in the streets do you think are going to watch the trial? Read the witness statements? The police reports? The interrogations? If anyone wants "justice" only for their race and not just plain justice for everyone, they need to take a good look at themselves and reevaluate their thinking.

What sickens me about this is that police are releasing videos of his history of being arrest I don't know what they're Maltese and agenda is but he has nothing to do with him being shot jogging is like the picture and image of him being a bad person that he robs TVs and things like just define those red mix for killing him I'm sorry they have footage he didn't take nothing and I should have waited until the police dealt with the situation

Probably hurt from all the punches he took, it's completely different shooting at someone while you're unharmed and when you're hurt, the adrenaline inhibits some of your senses.
