BELLE & EZZY: For more back story information: in February, I purchased Belle from an auction and well... we discovered she was pregnant about 4 weeks later following a wellness exam and quarantine! We were completely shocked but also very happy. This will be our first foal ever born at Free Spirit Farm. Here is a little background information: Belle is a 7-year-old Dapple Grey, Draft who is just under 16.2hh. On 6/16/23 Belle gave birth to her MYSTERY FOAL at 1:15AM!!! We were so excited and overjoyed upon the foal's arrival! Belle had a beautiful filly and we decided to name her Esmeralda. Ezzy is bold, intelligent, kind, willing, and independent. We absolutely adore her and Belle! In this video you will get to see the foal training I have done with Esmeralda thus far. I believe in a calm, gentle, natural approach in regard to training horses (and foals). Watch to see how baby Ezzy does during her session today! I am SO THANKFUL that Belle (and Ezzy) came into my life.

All of you are awesome! Thanks for your thoughts and comments. I am definitely going to do a performance exam with Belle before getting on her again. Ruling out physical issues was my first thought once I was done with her session. If that all goes well then I have a lot of great ideas and plans to work her. For now we will be doing groundwork for the majority of winter till Ezzy is weaned. Also, I was so excited to film and work with Belle today that I grabbed my first ever prototype bridle by mistake because it was hanging next to my finished model 😂. Aka the bridle that started it all and I spent a year tweaking. That’s why it’s so close to her “eye” and I realized after filming of course. Another note, the pool noodles won’t work for the bale barn 😢.

I'm wondering if Belle is simply too tall for the holes in the Bale Barn. Can one get Bale Barns with taller holes to give bigger horses clearance between their manes and the top of the hole? Maybe you or Kyle could use an angle grinder or similar to enlarge the hole and provide the clearance that Belle needs. (Or rather, the clearance that Belle's mane needs, LOL.)

Try just leaning over/on her back with someone holding her, Get her used to weight on her back before you sit astride, or ask her to move. And doing this in a more contained space would also be a wise idea

I recently saw a video where someone affixed a large teddy bear onto the saddle of a green horse to get it accustomed to the weight of being ridden. The teddy was probably 3 feet tall.

@awesomekat6881 GMTA! I know exactly ZERO about horses. Nevertheless, I deeply enjoy watching Shae's videos because of her deep understanding and commitment to her horses. She works so hard to ensure they are happy, healthy and well trained. Her emergency dismount is a perfect example. She realized Belle wasn't ready to go further. So rather than push her into her fear, Shae changed her plan to do what was best for Belle. More than likely that this was the safest decision for both of them. I really love this channel!

Good on you for recognizing Bell’s uncomfortableness when you attempted riding her. So many people have been taught to push through a horse’s discomfort and many times this can / will end in disaster. The last time you mounted Bella her tension was obvious - her head came up, her jaw was tense, her body was tight. She’s obviously a very smart horse - with time, patience and open communication between human & equine - she will thrive. I’m sure of it. 🌺

It's like you are an actual horse whisperer! You sense how she was feeling and know exactly when to dismount and reassure her that everything is okay. Once again, as always I am beyond impressed with your knowledge and ability as a horse trainer! I also am so pleased that you have Kyle nearby, just in case something unplanned should happen and you fall or are unintentionally injured. I believe a "buddy system" when training horses is very important. My Grandad was a very experience horseman who sometimes took on training horses without others in the paddock with him. Unfortunately, one afternoon when he was training a horse to ride, the horse freaked out and ended up falling with my Grandad halfway under him ... with the saddle horn gouging Grandad's internal organs. My Grandad was seriously injured and lay in the paddock for hours until a neighbor heard him calling for help. The farm house was not close enough for Grandma to hear him calling. Belle is such a magnificent horse and with your care and training, I'm sure she is going to become a fine riding horse too! She has bonded with you so sweetly and obviously trusts you very much. I'm really looking forward to following along on this journey!

So…we used to introduce weight onto horses who were a bit older (older than three). We would go from English saddle as you do…then progress to heavier bulkier western saddle…then we had a “dummy” we created from burlap feed bags partially filled with either corn or oats…the main section was draped across the western saddle horizontally and had smaller lightly filled burlap sacks (legs) on either side of saddle to simulate legs . This contraption was sewn by hand using fishing line so it was a center with the two legs on either side and was secured to,the saddle with the Latigos on the saddle. It was only about 40 or 50 lbs total weight. We only did this after getting the horse trained with “sacking out” to get them used to things flapping against their sides. It was a process and it was successfully in getting the horse accustomed to weight in the saddle while they were hand walked or lunged or driven. We never had a horse come unwound…but I do believe the fact that we had gotten them accustomed to “sacking out” was the reason it was a success. Just a thought. Belles jog is beautiful! She will be worth the extra time and effort. ♥♥♥

She is going to be a great ride for you. I had a horse years ago that was part Appaloosa she was 16 hands who was great to ride. She was so big. I trained her got her as a yearling who could not even lead. When I had to sell her she could do quite a bit of dressage work. She could go western or english. What a great horse she was. Wish I could have one again but now I am 76 and way to old to take on a horse but I can watch you and enjoy it.

Great instruction video Shae on training a green horse! Congrats on mounting her. 👏 I wondered how Belle would do walking forward bc, as soon as you mounted her, her head went up into a head-up alarm position (and you noticed it too when in the saddle). Not knowing any of Belle's training or injury history leaves you taking patient baby steps while you progress w/her. Is she ok around men? She seems ok while Kyle is filming, but wondered about it when you said she reacted to Kyle walking towards her (if that's what you said/meant), meaning maybe she was manhandled before you bought her? Curious. As far as simulating a rider (great idea), I've seen trainers use dummies or something similar. Like you realized today, Belle is a bigger project than you knew when you bought her. 😏 Btw, your knitted hat w/the flower on the side is so pretty and adorable on you! Your lipstick color was perfect. And Belle looks beautiful in purple! Looking forward to ynour next video❣️

Clearly, Bell has trust in you she just needs some more time. One thing my dad used to do when dealing with a horses, who was having a hard time with weight while moving, he had small sandbags that hung up and over each side of the saddle. Each time increasing the amount of bags being used to give the feeling of weight in the saddle. It worked every time. He was well known for being able to turn the unrideable horse around. He loved to work with horses who were deemed unbreakable when owners had given up on them. He’s advice was always it takes time, but more so it takes a lot of practice. He really was a genuine horse whisperer

Foundations are critical in a horse’s life, you’re so right to start her at the beginning again. This experience just shows how correct your training methods are, to be patient, cautious and always pay attention to your horse. Belle did very well. As she was used to driving, the only new thing was the girth, but it seems weight on top was a bit scary. Strapping some weight to the saddle as others have suggested sounds like a good way to accustom Belle to the idea. She is such a lovely mare. You are a savy horse-trainer!

It's obvious that she trusts and loves you, and wants to please you, but gets nervous with you on her back after a certain point. The training you are going to give her will do the trick. The purple pad is a knock-out...I think she would be great in teal too! Yes, very clear from watching her energy she has not been ridden before, though I also think it is possible she had a bad experience/was rushed into the attempt at this process before as you say, as she seems overall a pretty quiet mare but does seem to get on alert...this is the fun of horse training, being presented a new 'puzzle' and having to work thru it....this gives folks the real world experience...sometimes it is real easy i.e. Mooshoo but oftentimes it is problem solving. Though I would say since she is still nursing it might be too her hormones play a bit of a factor here but I would not think that is playing any significant part...this seems behavioural. This will just add some spice to the story line with her🙂

I knew A rancher/trainer who taught his horses to feel the weight in the saddle by getting an old pair of coveralls, tying the bottom of each leg and filling the legs with sand. He’d then put straw at the waist and tie or sew it shut. He would put the filled legs over the saddle and lunge the horses with a saddle and they’d feel the weight and flapping sand-filled legs along their sides. He was a gentle thoughtful trainer just like you. Maybe that idea might work for Belle to learn to feel the weight. Good luck 🍀

Great Job. i'm a big believer of getting your horse to halt when you drop to your knees. Never know when you may take a fall and I think it helps the horse learn that if you'r on the ground they need to stop and not run off. Couple of stuffed pillow across the saddle may help her get used to weigh and having something hanging/moving on her sides.

I love your approach. Belle is such a good girl, and your positive reinforcement gives her the confidence that she needs when you mount her. Baby steps are the key to getting her to trust you and know that what you are asking of her is natural and normal. Great job mama!

Belle is such a good girl!!! Seeing you work with these horses gives me so much motivation and confidence to work with mine! In the summer I got a thoroughbred that hasn’t had the best experience with people in the past. Your videos have inspired me so much and helped me gain confidence to work with him and how he loves people! You are truly amazing and I can’t wait to see how Belles journey unfolds. ❤

You do such an amazing job with your training. You really set an incredible example for everyone. One note I would have Kyle walk her in tack on his own until she’s relaxed and comfortable. It’s weird but horse can react fine untacked with someone and different with tack. She seemed a bit concerned when he approached. Best of luck, I’m sure you will have an amazing time with her, she is kind and lovely.
