Retro Bowl: How to Run with RB (2022 Guide and Tutorial)

This is a coaching clinic for Retro Bowl fans, covering how to run with your RB.
In all forms of football (video games, tackle, flag football), establishing the run is a key to any Offensive Coordinator's strategy.
In this tutorial, the running back runs the ball on every single snap to focus in on how to strafe to make defenders miss, how to break tackles, how to make a presnap read to determine where to run the ball (outside or between the tackles).
Also, learn how to backpedal behind the line of scrimmage for a chance to break big gains (50+ yard runs).
Last, we'll cover the attributes that all great RBs in Retro Bowl will have: speed, strength, stamina and pass catching. Plus, I'll answer the question of roster construction to determine if it's best to draft a running back or sign a star RB as a free agent.

Mentioned this in another comment, since this video, I have tested it with several seasons of five 5 star OL and the results are unreal. Had a 3,505 yard rushing season off of 401 attempts!

OL waste of money. 😆 Just get a strong arm QB and fast WRs. I load up on DL, DBs, try to grab speed, speed, speed! I have went up to 250M cap....and then it gets really fun bc every year you have expired contracts but you have to keep team competitive. Can't sign everyone! 😭😂🤣 You either love this game or you don't! I try to see how many times in a row I can go undefeated in a season and how many chips in a row.

this game is really fun when you start getting the 5 star offenses/defenses but its also fun even before that because the challenge of using a 1 star qb and having a 2 star wr and a 1 1/2 star rb and a 1 star Defensive Lineman

Rebuild and go dynasty mode! It's cool my squad has gone through phases, sometimes pass happy, sometimes run heavy, other times the d carries the team. Usually like to build a great OL and D and fill in the rest.

This game is awesome, after winning the Retro Bowl I maxed my cap and had to get rid of 2 players which made everything harder, the following year I missed the playoffs, im gonna have to purchase the unlimited.

Yep, salary cap makes you the General Manager. Gotta look ahead to when the contracts end (1, 2, 3 years) and figure out who you will resign and who you will trade. My advice is never cut someone, even if they're a free agent. Resign them and then trade them for the picks. This will make the fans unhappy but if you start winning again they come back.

Thanks for the advice. Because of this, my RB got 3,859 rushing yards and 63 rushing TDs. Also, my QB got 3,265 passing yards, 42 TDs, and 3INTs. And I went 15-1, and won the Retro Bowl

I've always had good luck with drafting RBs with max speed potential and good strength. Now finding a TE with max speed, there's a challenge! Also strafing slows and weakens your player from being able to break tackles and stiff arm. Sometimes if you just let them run, they'll run through a defensive player without being touched and you'll have more power and speed.

Good tips on the RB! I also agree max speed at TE is hard to find, but the queen of the chess board is the TE so always having a stud at TE is priority.

Strength is the most important for the HB and speed second. You can be 10/10 speed, but if you can't break tackles, then everyone will stuff you for 1 yard or even a loss. If you have 10/10 strength and only something like 2 or 3 speed, you can still break tackles of the CBs to the edge and even linebackers up the gut for 4+ yards. If you have both, it is insane.

I been using my RB very often. It helps me to secure a championship. My RB was the ROTY. I also use my QB for a quick 2-4 yards. This give me more options in offense.

Yoo just started doing the same thing! Noticed my QB had some speed so I just started running with him mostly. Then the next season I didn't have a good RB option so I just rushed with the QB or passed it with him. Ran for 1k yards, which was pretty cool. Now I've got a decent RB and have balanced the offense. I only have a QB, TE, RB who I run the entire offense through. Then I have 5 of the best OL possible. So they block up everyone and the QB/RB just steam roll. Use that swipe back back back move and hesitation step for as long as it takes to make the D miss. Then the RB springs ahead and can break off long runs that way. Same thing with the QB actually.

I have found out if you time the swipe right, you can dodge a tackle.

Yes, exactly, and if you master the hesitation step, swipe back back back for as long as you want and then let go and the RB will spring forward. You can make defense miss badly and break off long runs.

Got this on the switch for the 4th of July sale, but didn't have time to play until this weekend. I was given Washington as my starting team and played on Dynamic. TL:DNR version - Speed kills and the game got silly fun and then stale. I still like it. Story: Game 1, to end the year, I trashed the Giants. I traded away everyone except a veteran WR and my kicker, as everyone was old. Draft: • CB, who won a defensive award and I set as my return specialist. • A QB in round two who had about half a bar in speed, Throwing power and accuracy with a scouting report that he could fill both of them 100%. • Another CB in the third round. He was a bit of a liability according to the in game updates, but I improved him through the season. Season & game play: • I was surtat how fast my QB was, and he can get 5-15 yards per scramble. I look to make my throws and watch the rush. I press scramble if the pressure comes to fast, and had a lot of scrambling yards year one. • At some point a veteran lineman wanted to join the team, as well as an undrafted one star Tight End. • The Tight End would win league MVP for me with about 3 TDs each game. The defense would blitz 8 a lot and give me a quick throw to my TE. The Square out and Dig routes were very strong for him as well. • My veteran WR made many clutch catches all year long. • the offensive lineman helped my from time to time. • I went 16-2, losing to the Cowboys both times. I lost the NFC championship game vs the 49ers because of a fumble and my defense couldn't stop anything, as we traded scores until I lost tempo on that fumble. Going into year two, I had a bunch of draft selections. I got a WR with maxed out speed and almost maxed catch named AJ Gordon (makes me think of AJ Green + Josh Gordon). The dude became Randy Moss for me. He would catch my over throws and would take any streak and post to the house. I can pretty much score every time I take the field now just because of him. • I took a HB with full speed and half a bar of strength with the scouting report saying he can get maximum strength. I throw to him if I don't have good WR routes. Speed just shits on the defense in this game. • My other draft selections were two offensive linemen and defense (LB and D line) I have begun 5 and 0 and stopped playing for now. The real fun and challenge was year one and getting accustomed to the passing game and plays. Once I got speed and have two linemen with high blocking, it is comical. I guess the new challenge is maintaining a roster like that and seeing how much of a challenge that will or will not be.

I find the best way to get yards with your RB is to only run on plays where the QB drops back and does a toss. The RB will automatically be in a position where at bare minimum he’s getting a couple yards and if he Beats 1 or 2 dudes can get possibly 20 plus. It’s very rare you’ll lose yardage in these plays cause the QB will slightly draw the defensive line in and pitch it off to the running back, and by the time he gets the ball will be at the line of scrimmage and doesn’t have to worry about breaking through the line at all, on top of the defensive backs usually either blitzing or dropping back with your wide Receivers

Literally still play this game. At first I didn't understand the dynamic of it. Building a team. The coaches stars are the stars of the other players not your star players. After a season I got the grasp of it and destroy the comp. The playoffs are the best to me, much more challenging. P.s. who thinks they should do an online P.V.P style. Build your team and keep it the same but you get to pick your defensive plays and watch them against the other online players offense and vice versa

just establish strong blocking and you can also get past run protection mechanisms if you just shovel pass to the RB instead of tapping on him at the start of the play

Besides diving forward are the stiff arms and hurdles automatic? Or is there a swipe or tap to make those moves? From what I’ve seen swiping backwards does all three and it just automatically will do whatever move.

Nice video! My problem ist, that my RB just slides up when I do it. He doesn't go down when I slide with my finger down. Do you have any idea why? My receivers cant do it to. Its weird because one direction is possible but not the other. I hope you understand my bad english;)

Thanks man! I think I understand what you're saying. Let me describe how I make the RB or any ball carrier to hold my phone horizontal angle and with my right hand (I have the game flowing to the left) ... so with my right hand, pointer finger behind the line of scrimmage, I swipe up towards the top to move him to his right, or swipe down to move him to his left as he is running. If you swipe forward you will dive. If you swipe back the running back will do the hesitation steps like in the video. Did that answer it? If not just let me know. Before you know it 1,000-2,000 yard season ahead for your RB!

Sometimes you can't always get outside. There's creases to be had running outside. This is a fun game though.

Yeah there are creases to be had on the dive runs. These days, that's actually my go to run, vs the off-tackle or stretch runs. Do you know how to juke when the D is coming up from behind? Sometimes I time it by strafing back, but it only works rarely.

@@Gotflagfootballtrue you have to time it just right. I swipe up/down. It'll take practice but once you figure out the distance B4 you swipe it's super easy. Also, try throwing screens laterally to the LOS. When you have speedy wrs its hard for defense to defend. That definitely takes practice. I still have trouble swiping at the right angle. @@Gotflagfootball Lately I challenged myself to win a Retrobowl for all 32 teams in one career. So you win your first year then you leave, arrive at another team, trade all the players for draft picks right away and go all in on winning that year lol. I started out by going to the worst teams which actually works out really well because you get high draft picks and contracts don't matter because you'll be leaving when the year is over. It's pretty fun imo. I made it through a few divisions in the NFC before I arrived at the Vikings and wound up with an offense that is too good to give up. It's the running back, his strength and stamina are so high to go along with maxed out speed, I try not to use him too much, he's like a homerun hitter. But the best part about going to the bad team is a lot of the players are valued at a 2nd round pick, that's a steal. So in the draft you can have like 6, 2nd picks and a clean slate on your salary cap hahaha. I'm doing what Chip Kelly wanted to do lmao

Hit the wrench icon in the bottom left. Then on the next screen, upper right you'll see Unlimited Version > Team Editor with a pencil icon. Select your team on the next screen and then customize colors and name etc.

I play dynamic. Because I was new to the game it took a little bit to win a Retro bowl. Started with the Jets and worked my way from 6-10 to 10-6 losing the divisional round, 11-5 and lost the wild card, and then 14-2 winning it all. Then I made the mistake of going to Cleveland thinking I could make them contenders when I should have stayed with the Jets. Also, make sure you win against division rivals at all costs.

Can you do a spin move with a running back?

So you can't do a spin move exactly. But if your RB has high enough strength he will do spin moves once in a while to break tackles. I find it happens when I do a backpedal, or juke moves and then a defender tries to make a tackle and the RB spins off.

After you select a pass play your QB takes the snap and then you will need to swipe back and then lift your finger and the QB will start to run downfield. From there, it's the exact same as if you were running with the RB!

Good question. Like any great team, such as the Chiefs or Packers this season and you will find a team that has good chemistry and they're playing like a band of brothers and they have positive momentum and things are clicking. Definition of morale is: "the confidence, enthusiasm, and discipline of a person or group at a particular time." So if you have the opposite of that you have toxic players. In this game, like the real thing, you want the bad apples off the team. If they're morale is poor, bad, or toxic ... you can either have a meeting with them and boosts it up again. Or cut them before they affect the rest of the team. If you have one negative player and your team goes on a losing streak they may turn the rest of the team in negative morale also and then they're more likely to turn over the ball, etc. All in all, it's not the most important factor, but you want to keep morale. Sign a good OC/DC, they will also contribute.

What's the purpose of the STAMINA attribute?

Stamina is a key attribute. The more stamina a player has it makes it so when they can run fast the whole way down the field. Some players might have high speed but low stamina and then they burst out early in the play, but slow down and get caught from behind more frequently. For a RB, I would recommend speed first, then strength, then stamina whenever you have a chance to add to any of those attributes during the season. Catch is important for WR and TE though.

Retro bowl is really just a game of accepting trash players and selling them to make your team better. and a useful trick to have a 98% chance of winning the AFC or NFC, just make sure you have high ranking coaches and you will be fine

I think like an OC and test different lineups, each season. To your implied point, I switched it up and went with five 5 star OL, one stud TE, and the stud RB. Have had 100 catch 2000 yard seasons with the TE and 3,505 yard rushing season with the RB. Flow the entire offense through them. Fun times!

Five 5 star OL, best you can find. 1 rookie TE and resign him if you like. Flow the entire offense through TE and RB. Had 3,505 rushing season and 100 catch 2,000 yard receiving for the TE.

@@tumblweed2669 best offense work both! You can set up the run with the passing you're doing. Once the defense is backed up, run a few qb sneaks or swing passes to the RB, or handoffs.
