Whenever my mother would take me with her to JOANN Fabrics to get what she needed to make blankets or get yarn for her crocheting, I used to love watching the ladies cut the fabric and listen to them speak so softly. I always looked forward to that interaction--whether it was with us personally or watching other customers have their fabric measured and cut. It was like melting. It's the little things. 🤗

My Grandmother was a Seamstress in the 50s, 60s and 70s. She loved buying material her whole life. Her house was filled with fabric (we had to sell a lot when she passed but I have kept a few special ones to make into some items) and I have memories of being taken to fabric shops when she was looking after me as a child in the 90s. It was wonderful to see what her experience in one of her favourite places would have been like earlier in her life. Thank you :)

Thank you for sharing that story, Chloe. I have similar memories. My mother and my mamaw both worked in the local dress factory in the 1950s, and my mom would go on to make custom drapes for Sears. My mom had a lifelong love of sewing and always made me birthday and Christmas outfits of my choosing. I loved going to the fabric store with her, sitting down and flipping through the pattern catalogs, picking out just the right fabric. My mom would often stay up until two or three in the morning, happily seeing the night away. I miss her so much. 🥰🌺

I have lots of good memories of going to the fabric store with my mom when I was a kid. I would “get lost” in all the bolts of fabric and it was an immersion in color and texture. And I LOVED the special sound of the scissors cutting the fabric at the cutting table. Something about the sound of the metal scissors in that groove in the table.
@MidModMeridianASMR Жыл бұрын
The scissors against the cutting table!!! That is such an unusual sound but I love it as much as you do! That’s why I tried to get squeeze three “cutting episodes” in there. 😂 I wish I could go into an old fabric store and smell those old smells. These days the fabric is just in a section of a larger store like Walmart or Michael’s. Thanks for watching, Angela. I’m glad you enjoyed it. 💚💚

The plaid with the poppies would look so nice as a dress. I thought a shirt at first, but then I saw the pattern properly and thought "No, definitely dress." There's only one actual fabric store in my hometown. I remember going there with my mother once, and I don't really remember what for. I was very young. I heard it was still open, so I'm planning on going there when I can and check it out. My grandmother knew how to sew, but I never actually saw her doing it. She wasn't a professional seamstress, but my mother does tell me that when they were younger, my grandmother would make dresses for them on special occasions. They didn't have a lot of money, but would still look nice if my grandmother had a say in it. My mother only does mending jobs, so I'm the first one that actually uses a machine. I'm still very much a beginner, basically self taught through KZbin tutorials. I made her curtains and cloth napkins.

What a lovely comment. I always love hearing stories like this. Both my mother and my grandmother sewed quite a bit. They both worked in a local dress factory in the late 1950s/early1960s, and my grandmother went on to work for Sears making custom drapes in the 70s and 80s. My mom made clothes for my brother and me as we were growing up and also as adults. She actually made my wedding dress, which was modeled on some pictures from 1917. She designed the pattern herself and sewed on 40,000 beads. That dress will always be a treasure to me because it reminds me of her. 🥰🥰 I’m glad to hear you’re gonna try to check out that old fabric store. 💚

I had a corduroy skirt/jacket suit when I was around 14/15 years old (mid 1970s). Oh, the colour was just magnificent, a sort of steel denim blue colour. The jacket was a bomber jacket style with a midi length flared skirt. I haven’t thought of it for decades and you’ve given me such happy memories looking back. There was a bit of a sad end to the story though, as I seem to recall that the suit items weren’t washed together and they ended up very different colours - one being the original gorgeous steely blue and one being a very faded version of the original and no amount of subsequent laundering could bring the colours back together, I was heartbroken and being a sensitive stroppy teenager I refused to wear the suit again. Oh my poor mom, I fear I was a right pain in the backside over it, sorry mom!

Hey Sherri. I think I remember you saying that you have great memories of your mom regarding materials, sewing etc. Question: Do your own videos create nostalgia for you on a personal level? Do you enjoy watching your own videos?
@MidModMeridianASMR Жыл бұрын
What a thoughtful question, Rebecca! I do enjoy watching my own videos, although it does depend somewhat on the topic/set. The more nostalgic ones for me are definitely my purse and jewelry rummaging videos (which is why I love yours so much). I loved it when my mom would clean out her purse. The sounds were so comforting, and there were always great surprises in there-extra change she’d give me and my brother, a piece of gum, etc. My vanity video is also nostalgic for me. Oh, and anything remotely secretary-like. My mom had a desk job as an insurance underwriter and sometimes my brother and I would need to be there at work with her when school was out. Listening to her doing her job, talking on the phone, processing papers, typing, mumbling to herself. Oh the memories. 🥰🌼 Thank you for asking. ☺️☺️💚

Delightful, Sherri! I see in many of the comments how many good memories this brings back for your viewers, myself included. I grew up with a mom and a grandmother who sewed, so these sounds are all part of the "fabric" of my childhood. One of my favorite triggers is the sound of the scissors biting through the fabric on the cutting table! It's such a productive, industrious sound; and makes you wonder what the sewist plans to make with it. Do you sew yourself? If not, you had me convinced that you do, lol! I've often wondered if you sew many of your vintage outfits for the videos? The gum display is a hoot! Where did you ever find that?? Amazing prop! I also love the sound of writing on the paper roll board...the tinny sound of the board along with the scratching of the writing...chef's kiss! Hope you had a blessed Easter, Pam P.S. I was hoping you'd drag the adding machine out to total up the order, lol!

What is it about the sound of scissors cutting fabric along a cutting table. It’s not exactly a soft noise, but it is oh so satisfying. So reassuring. I don’t currently sew although I know how to. My mom taught me of course ☺️- on my grandmother’s treadle Singer sewing machine. I did eventually graduate to the electric machine. 😂 I used to make a lot of clothes but probably haven’t in 25 years now. I found the display rack on eBay (without the gum). I repurposed it for the gum and made a new sign for it. That was fun. I thought about pulling out the adding machine but the video was getting way too long. It crunches numbers so nicely, doesn’t it. I’m glad you liked this one so much, Pam. I really enjoyed reading your comment. Sherri 💚✨
