Man... Exactly! I bought the 8bitdo SN30 Pro 2 controller because it's the best dpad ever! I was extremely disappointed. I went and double checked reviews and noticed everyone jumps on super mario world for their test. I was like, what the hell? I noticed missed inputs and accidental diagonals on that damn controller. The game i played was Super Metroid and it was making wall jumping difficult. What amazes me is that it's a known issue and multiple solutions for this. If controller needs to be modified, why does everyone recommend it still? I even came up with my own "fix" and it works better. No issues wall jumping now.

Well that's a downer, really thought it would be a 3D Pad alternative option. Still it might have some homebrew potential across the three Sega consoles. I really don't see why it couldn't do 3D Pad support given it has a Mode button, could add some analog triggers behind the bumpers. Thought the same thing, that thumbstick is too close, needs to move towards the center more. :\ Maybe a BrawlerGen2 could address this as some companies aren't above model revision. Even though those three systems don't have Rumble, adding it would give the controller more weight and heft. Maybe Rumble approximation based on regular game sound like the approximated the D-pad through the thumbstick.

Yeah, this is my one major disappointment too. My one _minor_ disappointment is that it's not 3 in 1 - Mega Drive, Saturn, and USB - although I suppose doing that would make it slightly costlier to produce since USB takes quite a bit more circuitry than those older, simpler connectors. That being said none of the Saturn to USB adapters I've owned have supported analogue anyway... if this hypothetical second revision came with one that did, I'd buy it purely to use my official Saturn steering wheel in MAME (mostly for Out Run) 😁

@@DissociatedWomenIncorporated Was just telling my buddy how nobody ever asked for D-pad to analog conversion ever, see Neo Geo mini. :P I was considering the USB variant for one analog emulation use like SS/N64. Shame you haven't found any good analog solutions, must be because of fewer 3D SS games so the dollars aren't spent for support there. :( That sounds like a great idea, the SS wheel is a sweet peripheral, love the way your legs can brace the base. :D

I made the assumption that the stick was an analog stick and I am glad that I did not buy it now. My only reason for picking it up was so that I could avoid swapping controllers for 3d analogue support. Now that I go to their site, they have 2 lines of text in red at the very bottom that says the analog stick registers as 8 way. I remember them saying it had an analog stick and they even call it that in the red descriptor that literally says it's NOT an analog stick and in fact is just a digital 8way. That's some pretty serious misinformation.

I was thinking about getting one but don't like that split cable design. Wish they would have gone with a single cable with two separate plug in adapters. I got two of these and I like the controls but They can’t replace the originals for me. The first one I got was the Grey Version thats supposed to match with the Grey Model 1 Saturn. Unfortunately the R Button came with this Mushy feeling whenever I press down on it. It still works but feels kinda weird. I heard it’s what happens when you open up the controller and don’t put the R button on correctly. I never opened it up btw. The Second controller I got was the original black. This one came perfectly without any L or R button issues. As I tested both I noticed quarter circle motions and dragon punches are a little more difficult to perform since the D-Pad is smaller now. I’ve gotten too used to the feel of the original Pad that these smaller ones throw me off. For other games like Beat em ups and platformers they mainly work fine but sometimes my character will turn around by mistake when Pressing down on the D-Pad in some of the games I tested. It could be my hands are a little bigger than normal or i’m really just not used to the controller. Some games like Sonic 3-D Blast, Willy Wombat and Crusader of Centy work great with the Analog Stick. It gives them a smoother feel when moving the character around the area. I think the main game that worked the best with the D-Pad is NBA Jam. Both the Original, Sega CD and TE(Saturn) worked great and feel tighter in movement than ever. If anyone is ever debating on whether to get one of these or not. Give it a shot and see how you like it. These definitely have their uses and they don’t have to replace the originals.

This controller is a good idea, cuts down on space and is easy to keep stashed away. Sometimes my wife confiscates my controllers when she says I'm not paying enough attention to her. With this I will always have a reserve controller.

Thats weird that they chose to not make the stick analog, they could have made it switch between modes. I really think that limits its appeal. I hope we eventually the RetroBit ones, or even an 8BitDo analog Genesis/Saturn pad. That would be the ultimate since I want one pad for PC/Genesis/Saturn with 6 face buttons.

Yeah, I feel as though this is a huge missed opportunity. No analog stick AND no analog triggers? Why even include a stick on it, even if it's supposed to work on Saturn? They should've made it more versatile by making it usable as a PC controller to give them an excuse to include analog support on Saturn. Just have digital shoulder buttons and analog triggers similar to an Xbox controller, maybe even throw in a right analog stick (even if it needn't work for Saturn games), and you've got a great Saturn controller that arguably tops the 3D Control Pad. While I like the 3D Control Pad, I never really considered the toggle switch to be all that useful, as I wouldn't use that controller for anything that didn't need analog triggers.

The strength of this pad is mainly in its multi system functionality. If you are looking for something to replace the official controllers, there is nothing on the market even worth talking about.

I would just love them to come out with a dual analog version like they did with the SNES controller. That would be the perfect all-rounder for me. I wouldn't need another controller. Before you mentioned it the first image of the controller had me thinking that stick was a little close to the d-pad. I'd guess maybe they put it there for ergonomic reasons, or did they just go "oh ah we should put a stick on here to match the later controllers, we didn't really have room for it, and we don't' want to redesign the grips"

Your experience with the dpad is interesting. I have the brawler 64 for n64 by the same company, and that dpad constantly gave me extra up inputs when hitting left and right. Made mortal kombat trilogy a struggle and I lost faith in them. Seems like you are having better luck with this on saturn so I might give the company another shot.

Hey bro, that's a cool review, but I gotta be honest that it doesn't answer my most important questions. To me the most important things are: 1. is it still good after half a year of being a daily driver? Or does the dpad creak, and the jotstick drift? 2. What is the manufacturer repair warranty support service like in that case? 3. Does it survive falls ok? 4. Can aftermarket parts be used for repairs? eg can the jostick cap be replaced with one meant for a ps4? can the encoder be replaced with a ps4 or xbox encoder? can the cable be replaced easily with a stock one, maybe with mods? this is super important after warranty is over and/or after the company folds - and let's be honest that's a more than likely scenario for third party manufacturers

How does feel if you use "the claw" method of holding the controller? I stupidly held the Genesis controller like that and it's how I always want to hold the controller on all retro games today. I really like the idea of the analog pad acting as the d-pad for some Genesis games - I just wonder about the grip when trying to "claw" the controller. Also the claw is why I hated the SNES - I'd go over to my stupid friends house and play Mario Kart and just sucked ass since I could not hold the controller and use my thumbs for the buttons and try to hit the shoulder buttons. Mario Kart still pisses me off to this day... just give me 6 face buttons and I'm happy.

And Comment: You talk so much about Virtua Fighter 2 that I gave it a go for the first time in over 10 years. Just on normal I couldn't get past Pai. (Level 4) Gave her 4 tries and she kicked my butt each time! The game plays so much differently than the capcom style fighters I play so often.

As the name implies, it's a fighting game controller. The mini thumbstick is meant to be a small arcade stick rather than an analog replacement. It's why stuff like Nights and Space Harrier still play so well. The smooth rotation of the thumb stick can really benefit certain games.

I own the original that came with the Saturn, which is the crappy one we had in the west for release, a 3rd party one that isn't as good as the original, and the 3D pad that I used to death with Nights and Daytona CCE. IF this was analogue, i'd buy it right now. But it's not, so i'll stick to my Japanese Saturn controller.
