These formats were the Pinnacle of Pokemon TCG before the modern era power creep and big basics ruined the game

Weve never fully recovered since the garbage B&W formats brought in immediately after

When 2009 was added to tcgone, I originally played Beedrill but discovered it got absolutely wrecked by Flygon Stall, so I switched to Gyarados, which I've enjoyed. Hot take: Fainting Spell is more unhealthy than Super Energy Removal. Ross Gilbert spent three minutes ranting about Gengar in "the most annoying pokémon tcg cards ever! you will hate these!", at one point describing a situation where he stacked three Energy and an expert belt onto a Donphan to get a OHKO and his opponent flipped heads on Fainting Spell, succinctly finishing "And I just did all the work!" I was kind of furious when I realized Mesprit doesn't shut off Fainting Spell. Not even Power Spray works! Not even Gardevoir's Psychic Lock! All the effects that neutralize your opponent's Poké-Powers only start on your opponent's turn! There needed to be a better workaround than Uxie, especially considering how squishy and easy to Shadow Room Uxie is while on the bench.

Ross Gilbert is ptcgradio, by the way.

Other workarounds are Burn/Poison (Roserade GL, Skuntank G, Blaziken FB), Damage counters (Your own Gengar SF Shadow Room, Crobat G (very useful in this matchup in specific, Azelf Lv.X). I think the only time Fainting Spell becomes truly unmanageable is when it later gets access to Vileplume which makes it hard to use any counters like Uxie + damage buffs or reusing Crobat G

@@WhimsicottTCG Yeah, I guess that list is pretty long... it's just... I guess it's not always possible to avoid. Like in this game, where Gyarados evidently didn't have the option to KO Gengar with double Crobat. *Sigh.* Also, I remembered thinking MD-CoL would be fun to play because of decks like Turtwig GL and MewPerior, but the more I think about how decks like Gengar and Gliscor take off, the more toxic the format seems.

@@Charmaster04 That's just the way the gyarados is. It plays a lot of gust and damage mods with the crobat, but otherwise, it's rather inflexible in terms of strategy

@@WhimsicottTCG I have noticed how inflexible Gyarados is, but I struggle to get motivated to try other decks in 2009, and I still don't see that many decks which motivate me to play 2010. Maybe EX Block (And, by extension, 2006 and maybe 2005) feel safer because I'm used to them, but there are many cards in those formats I enjoy playing, such as Pidgeot, Electrode ex, Double Rainbow and Scramble Energy, Rocket's Admin., the Holon Energy, and Holon's Pokémon. Compare this to 2009 and 2010, where the biggest shiny new toy is the high-skill SP archetype I'm scared to touch. Gyarados is kind of my comfort food in this format, but I guess I should probably confront my fear of trying new decks in this format and play a few games with Regigigas. As for 2009, I'm just curious what decks don't get bodied by Flygon Lv.X. I switched to Gyarados from Beedrill because the latter just couldn't seem to beat my favorite sand dragon (How is Sandaconda not Dragon/Ground?), but I'm wondering if Regigigas would stand a chance in 2009, since I've played against at least one person who was using it.

Ahhh... Pokémon TCG, A great game until I remember why I quit; it is way too much of a mere (computer) program that runs down. Not only do the cards lack creativity (gameplay-wise) but also complexity and especially interaction. The game doesnt feel like you play with someone else together, but like everyone is playing (seemingly) on their own. Imagine the game would have a card(s) like this; (1) _"You can only play this card on your opponents turn. If your opponent declares an attack; switch your Pokémon with a benched one before any damage is done to your active Pokémon"_ (2) _"You can only play this card during your turn if your opponent played a card from his or her hand this turn which switches out his active Pokémon to the bench; put 8 damage counters on each of your opponents Pokémon moved to the bench that way this turn"_

Valid points, but about the worst possible format you could have made this comment on a video for since the two only effects I can think of that you can use on your opponent's turn existed in this format... Alakazam (Which was not played that much), and Power Spray (Which was played in every SP-focused deck). Granted, Alakazam just sits there where your opponent can see it, so it isn't much of a trap, but still... The one part of this comment that feels cryptic is "it is way too much of a mere (computer) program that runs down," though that line is easier to understand via context clues.
