One of my favorite coin-op games. I recall playing that game in several arcade places as well as seeing the sit-down version and that little upright version. The score and time display were off the monitor as red LEDs. I also recall how the sound effects are kinda different from one machine to another. But yet, the game play would look and sound the same. No doubt, it IS Old but Gold!

That came out in 1979?!?!? Galaxian came out that same year and wasn’t nearly as colorful as that!! In fact, most games then were either in black and white or had monochromatic sprites. Not to mention the fact that there’s highly detailed and constantly changing scenery in a game that predates Xevious by 3 whole years!! (Xevious made detailed and constantly changing scenery a staple in top-down games).

Not only that, but this game didn't even have a CPU! This arcade game was made with standard transistors, resistors, and capacitors! ROM chips held the graphics, but even the scoreboard was analog on the arcade machine. It's a weird hybrid.

Galaxian was the first arcade game in showing native RBG colors.

Sega in the arcade seemed to always be ahead of its time Virtua fighter in 1993 when 3d was really rare

The whole game was done by discrete logic- hundreds of TTL chips dispersed between several boards and EPROMs which carry the graphics.

The fact that the game logic itself is actually implemented in hardware is fucking crazy, and I would bet that a lot of game developers would tell you that this is impossible.

@@charlesn898 What I meant is that Sega took it further by using advanced graphics (for 1979, this is almost as good as it gets.) in the discrete hardware, which is uncommon for games made on discrete hardware.

SilentQix I understand this is a game that can’t be emulated due to ROMs not being present. Did they just recreate the game as best they could?

Dear SEGA, U.S. Saturn owners never got to see this game in a compilation outside Japan. Please consider releasing this to the Switch as part of the SEGA AGES series.

Man! I spent a fortune in this arcade back in the day. I went to a gallery where there were like 20 of this small cabinets with an almost-horizontal screen. I loved the steer wheel and the pedal. Thanx for uploading, man! :D

Not even close to being one of the oldest Sega games. They've been around for a long time and had arcade-type electromechanical games back in the 1960s, if not earlier.

As a former pro at this game, I can honestly tell you the guy playing this in this video sucks. The concept of getting a good score is one of minimalism. You want to move the steering wheel as little as possible with small corrections. Only move it as much as you need to, especially on the ice. I guess you never forget how to play these, even 35 years later, like riding a bike.

To be fair, the arcade game had a hyper-responsive analog steering wheel which he's not using in this emulator.The sound of the "Game Over" music indicates it's being played in an emulator.

It's the Saturn version. Recreated for the Sega memorial vol 2 as someone wrote it before here I just looked for an emulator and downloaded that iso. It just brought back memories. I remember playing it con the cabin with the steering wheel. Specially the tunnel part with the car turning on lights and the snow track just reminded me. How nice was to play it. I'm just having this back with the emulator.

intel386DX it's sega saturn version, it's possible to emulate sega saturn console with "SSF012alpha" emulator and "Sega Ages Memorial 2 (J)(Saturn)" rom contained Monaco GP game. Other solution: "mgpr_v1_4_6" file it's a remake of this game. ;-)

Oracle the fact that they made this kind of game in late 70's with TTL's is amassing! and yes in that time there already a CPU driven games but SEGA preferred to make that game based on that technology :)

intel386DX I know...I know...I am happy to have known this time of the game and to have dedicated to it a lot of time, as well as player but also worker (I held a stand of arch games on the carnivals). And Satisfied (happy) to see that it have always enthusiasts there today.
