This setup lasted me for a good two or three generations of increasingly demanding games. It's central to some of my best childhood memories. I was clearly priviliged.

Yes, the GF3 was an amazing card, I would have loved to have it in the 2000s.

I really like this video format of seeing minimum requirements vs higher specs. Plus I've never seen POD run so smoothly! Great Video!

Nice work.. mate.. this is becoming one of my fav channels.. as i step into retro builds myself. Haver been purchasing parts for the last 3m.. so maybe over xmas i will get something build.

I'm glad to hear that you are going for a retro build. What do you have in mind, for the components and OS?

Oh how I wish I didn't sell everything I had each time I changed stuff in my PC. Thanks for taking me back to my high school days. I started with a 486, but then got a hand-me-down celeron 300 with SiS 6326, and the rest is history.

Hello my friend, thank you for your retro videos. I am a fan of retro computers myself (Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP) and have already put together a few systems. Unfortunately, there are always problems, incompatibilities and problems with old hardware that doesn't work or is defective. I just had to learn that the hard way when I built a Windows 98 computer. But that's what makes it so appealing - when everything works as it should, it gives you a deep sense of satisfaction. I have already watched a lot of your videos, they are very well done. Thumbs up!👍

Good video! I went a bit more overboard with my build, with an overclocked Phenom II X4, 2x HD4850 in Crossfire and a SoundBlaster X-Fi. It's fairly late for XP in 2008, but games such as Oblivion, S.T.A.L.K.E.R and even San Andreas can manage very good hardware usage.
@MidnightGeek9910 ай бұрын
Thanks. You have a nice built, and yeah, Oblivion and STALKER are quite demanding, especially if you want to use high AA.

Great video. Especially liked the inclusion of morrowind. I had a p4 1.4ghz machine with 128mb of ram and a tnt2 riva 32mb card. I was so upset how badly the game performed with that machine. I ended up buying an xbox to play the game rather than upgrade the pc. Kinda nice to see that even a geforce 3 and 256 mb ram with a 2ghz cpu couldn't handle it. Wow. That xbox came in clutch (fps was probably sub 30, but at least it wasn't 8fps like on my old rig). Years later, I played it on pc with an Athlon 64 2800+, geforce 6800gt, and 1gb of ram.
@MidnightGeek999 ай бұрын
Morrowind was very demanding, and yeah, playing it on Xbox was ok. The same for Oblivion, you were better with an Xbox 360 than a mediocre PC.
@joaoc_PT9 ай бұрын
I think POD was mainly a game to show new intel's mmx capabilities (like mdk). Non-mmx cpus did now handle those well. That changed quickly, ofcourse. Subscribed!

I did not know that, thanks!

You should try a game called "Planetside Forever" in your benchmark. It's an emu of Planetside (an old MMOFPS) and is dead now, but it's a game I remember struggling to run back in 2003.

Amazing, you should try also Windows 2000 for gaming and compare it with the XP or 98 about the performance :D also try some games like The Chronicles of Riddick, amazing 2004 game, or the Swat 4

Ti200's are a handsome card, pretty available too. I have a pair of Asus GF'3s, the Deluxe (Ti500) and the standard Ti200. Both look almost identical, black PCB's with gold HS+FAN etc. I still don't own an original GF3. Wish I did. Piece of history. But I got a couple of GF2 Ultras which are pretty much useful replacements in 16-bit colour titles of the period. A friend of mine kept his old machine after upgrading, back in the day. He moved from a P3-733Mhz + GF3 (original) to a P4 2Ghz + GF4 Ti4600. Surprisingly, even though that P3-733 was really dated by then, and severely bottleknecked the GF3, the card really produced a solid framerate. We played Giants : Citizen Kabuto, Quake III (of course), POD Racer. It meant I didn't have to lug my own desktop round to his house anymore to LAN, and that little P3+GF3 machine held up for years.

I have only one GeForce3, I'm trying to get more of them, but they're quite scarce here in Romania.

Yes, I like using cheaper parts, and parts that can be replaced without breaking the bank.

The problem the Geforce 3 had was you could never find it in stock (I swear the devoted the manufacturing to the Xbox) and then not long after the 9700pro came out and dominated Nvidia for a full 2 years. This was a time when cards were evolving so fast, Nvidia really dropped the ball to lose against ATi for that long. Then I think the 6800 came out with Shader Model 3 and we never heard of AMD again until the terrible Nvidia 400 series.... Other than that they've been trailing ever since with their only good product being the 7000 series.

Hej! I would looove to see you try Elden Ring on a CRT 4:3 :) it might need mods to change the hud placements (I have no idea how changing the aspect ratio affects things like that with modern games, tho)
@MidnightGeek9910 ай бұрын
Most modern games don't support 4:3 aspect ratio. There are widescreen CRTs though :)

very comparable to a build of my own! i have a pentium 4 ht 2.8ghz (originally had a 2.4ghz northwood chip but the motherboard i ordered had this chip in it, figured id keep it.) ATi Radeon All in Wonder 8500, and 2 gigs of ram.

I can't find the OG Doom 3 anywhere, only the BFG edition. Can anyone point me to a source of OG third doomness?
@MidnightGeek9910 ай бұрын
Sure, you can find it on GoG, or Steam.
@ozzyp9710 ай бұрын
GOG purchase includes both versions, and will even work perfectly fine on Windows XP thanks to no DRM. BTW, YT straight up removed my comment before for some reason. I didn't even link anything, so who knows what they're up to.

You would do a lot better with a 9600/9700/9800Pro. The game that made me upgrade was FEAR as the Athlon XP just doesn't have the grunt to do FEAR.

@MidnightGeek9910 ай бұрын
@alexclaudiu200310 ай бұрын
Cred ca Sega Rally 1 foloseste si jocuri precum Age of Empires 1 si 2, etc.
@MidnightGeek9910 ай бұрын
