Still tasteful beyond its years if not timeless... But, $50,000 in '87 is close to $110,000 in 2017 money.

They'll be alright. They were too hyper-focused on their RWD sedans (CT4, CT5, CT6) and one last gen of FWD luxo-boat (XTS) in an era where sedan sales are on the decline. For awhile the only SUVs they had were the entry-level SRX and top-end Escalade. Now with the XT4, XT5, XT6 crossovers, Escalade, and upcoming all-electric SUV and sedan they'll have a good lineup. But yeah the '80s were a disaster for Cadillac.

@@kenbob1071 You missed the sarcasm in my first post. GM cars of that time might have had a lot of features/buttons, but the quality, engineering, and driving dynamics were subpar. Compare a 1987 Allante, an all new design, vs an 87 Benz SL, which came out in 1971, and tell me with a straight face the Allante is the better car. It might have more features and a whiz bang techie dashboard(which looks silly now days), but in every other way its an inferior car

@@kenbob1071 Maybe I'm just full of sarcasm, I'm ridiculing both ends of the spectrum. The Tesla displays look pretty trick, not going to lie, they even work pretty decent compared to some other makers touch screens. I'm just more of the idea that luxury is well made, good design, good engineering, good durability, low operating cost and not mickey mouse tricks like 1000 buttons or huge ass display screens. Getting back to the SL vs Allante, the SL just feels solid, the door shut, the interior fit/finish, body gaps, it just feels well built and has proven durable.

This car looks like a mix between a 1992 Maserati Ghibli (AM336) and a 1989 Aston Martin Virage, which is good company to have. I'm from the UK and a big fan of Cadillacs, Cadillacs are special cars. This Allante was ahead of its time and going from the promotional video a really well thought out and designed package for the Cadillac driver to enjoy.

In the 1989 MW test, they were far harsher in their assessment of the '87 than they were in this road test. In fact, they were harsher on the improved '89 than they were on the rougher '87. I wonder if the excitement of a new type of car from Cadillac made their outlook rosier the first time. It's also disconcerting that Cadillac has been talking about designing "a whole new line of world-class cars" for the past 30 years. They've only just started to get close.

The Allante was a beautiful car for its' time. To be honest, it is still fairly handsome. Cadillac has never been a car company that catered to blue collar clientele. With that stated, those who purchased them probably were not worried about the price. The real issue is why would they spend so much money, time, and effort to build such a vehicle and then give it the HT4100 for a power plant. In 1987, GM had two power plants that would have made better sense for such a car. For fans of natural aspiration, there was the tuned port 5.7 liter (350ci) from the Corvette. For those who like turbos, there was the Buick 3.8 liter (231ci) from the Grand National. The Buick 3.8 liter turbo was also used in the GMC Cyclone and GMC Typhoon. In my opinion, these two engines would have been far superior to the HT4100 (an engine that suffered from insufficient horsepower, overheating issues, and warped cylinder heads throughout its' decade long production run).
@moejr19747 жыл бұрын
They weren't going to use a corporate engine in a top line Caddy. For 89 the engine increased to 4.5 liters and was way better than the 4.1 even though they were the same engine. Caddy had finally worked the bugs out of the 4.1. 93 was the last year and only year that the northstar was available in the Allante. That was a huge boost in power. FYI the GMC Typhoon and Syclone used a turbocharged version of the 4.3 Chevy engine that was co-developed with Buick.

@@filthyanimal874 it isn't the unions fault. Companies would have people working all day if they could. GM and the other two just don't want to put in the effort and profit to make something good. If they treat their cars like that it's a good thing we have unions.

AMCNorthstar 93, Mercedes 500SL eats Alante's for breakfast and lunch and supper. GM has never understood how to build real cars. If they ever put a real steel or aluminum body on a Corvette and abandon Transformers design, I might just buy one.

Jan Diehn Yes the 500 SL is entirely different than is predecessor which was outdated and also underpowered for its time. If I had to choose again on a Mercedes it would be the 500 SL but I still prefer the Allante myself as I own and drive one daily.

Cadillac sold the Allante from 1987 til 1993, now they are worth soo much as a collector's car.

It really was an excellent car in many aspects, just a shame it suffered the same fate as cars like the Cadillac STS, Subaru SVX and Renault Avantime for being overpriced

To be honest, I like the Allantè's exterior design. Smooth, clean and effortless. Only glitches are these two guards on the rear bumper. And its interior looks more at home in a Japanese car. Just like the exterior, it doesn't remind me much of a Cadillac. Good thing that back then, I suppose.

The Alliante is the most under rated car in history. It truly does not deserve the hate it gets. I understand that people were upset at how overpriced it was back in the days, but now that it has depreciated there's absolutely no reason to hate on it anymore. It's a great car, get over it.

My mother had a Catera. I think it was in the dealership longer than she owned it because of cylinder head and gasket problems. She traded it for a Toyota Camry.

What is s not to understand.........its a good thing Cadillac built a model in this class here. And then along with the XLR as the Allante's successor a few years later. Once you drive and own one, its hard not to drive it everyday!
@hawkhunter7 жыл бұрын
The Catera and Allante are polar opposites. The catara was nothing more than a rebadged gm. The Allante was an original design.

As was their style GM cheaped out on the parts-the Pininfarina body had numerous flaws, and build quality was low. I remember a local guy bought one-and his gold-plated keys started peeling-the thing gold plate just came right off. Another half-baked attempt at contemporary luxury. and the "cemetery" comment was apt-the No.1 market for Cadillac was south Florida-and the old geezers always complained that their engines burned out-they never drove them over 40 MPH-so the rings never set
@starxlr78636 жыл бұрын
No that's incorrect.....the Allante cars were very well built and had great build quality. It was the other model Cadillac's of mostly the 70's and 80's that had build quality issues and flaws. Being Italian-built by Pininfarina, these cars had some of the best materials and paints used. I've been around many Cadillac's and Allante's and the ones that did have any issues and flaws were the ones that were badly neglected and abused which happens a lot to cars.
