2019 marks the 20-year birthday of the Samsung SCH-3500, a sleek Sprint cellphone notable for its petite form factor and amazing (for 1999) voice-dialing feature. The SCH-3500 was also MrMobile's first ... mobile. So when a bunch of my most excellent tech-KZbin brethren told me they were getting ready to run videos about their first cellphones, I eBayed me a '3500 and jumped on that rocket faster than that Pizza Hut delivery hit the ISS in 2001. That joke go over your head? The video makes it clear, so jump on in to the latest Retro Review and take a trip back in time - in MrMobile's First Cellphone Retro Review!

Man this thing's looks and AIM messaging _still_ seem futuristic! Somehow. And yeah that rubber reversion is getting to be a big problem for collecting tech from this era. Certain game controllers, IBM ThinkPads, the Gizmondo... blegh.
@TheMrMobile
@TheMrMobile 5 жыл бұрын
Blegh is right! I first saw it on the rubber stoppers below the keypad on a Samsung A460; when I pulled the clamshell open for the first time in years the stoppers were basically liquid; they just stretched out into two Hershey's kisses. Fascinating (and sad) process. Thanks for paying me a visit; been loving your videos since I found your channel last year!

Heh, reminds me of the sticky button issue on all the Italian exotic cars of the late 90s and early 2000s as well. Can’t tell you how many times I’d press a radio button and leave a mushy finger mark on those things - yuck!

First time I ever saw "mobile" phone in action was in 1987, 1988, my grandfather, army officer, had his car outfited with a radiotelephone from Nokia, and it was like something from a TV show. It was installed into rear armrest, it was metal box with regular receiver and dialpad, you could remove it and carry around on a strap but it was too heavy and needed external antena to be able make calls. And blimey, with networks back then, you needed to dial operator (1056, I remember that even today) and than say, what number you actually want to connect and call was than carried by regular, wired network, your only wireless connection was to the operator. But it was awesome, to call my mum from a moving car on the other side of a state. And my first mobile phone was made by Bosch, because I couldn't afford my real winner, Motorola StarTAC.

Who else remembers T9 text input? I dualing loved it. Except for the occasional word that had a more common word that used the same keystrokes. To this day my best friend and I use T9's F-word in conversations as in "... Dude, I just ate In-N-Out for lunch!" To which I usually reply "Dual you man, I would love to have that but there aren't any in Tennessee!" Haha, the good ol' days. This video makes me wish I still had my Motorola StarTac.

My first phone was a Philips Genie (1999, if I remember well). Really great reception, and one thing I've always loved about its interface is that every menu item was number coded. So, if Messages was the fifth item in the main menu, and 'Send SMS' the second item of the Messages menu, its corresponding code was '52'. Instead of navigating through submenus, you could just 'speed-dial' 52 and you were taken directly to that function. It sounds convoluted, but it really wasn't. Once you memorised the most-used commands, you did things really quickly. Too bad the keypad was mushy and wasn't built to last at all. I went through two Genies in just 18 months at the time! And mobile phones weren't cheap back then, at least for a student like me. I had missed your retro reviews. Michael! Happy 2019!

Oh the memories, My first device was a Motorola Star-Tac on the early Vodafone network in the UK. It had a display that would rival most modern day scientific calculators, would drink its battery over the period of a week on stand-by, but make a call, and you'd be charging it once if not twice a day. You even had to slot the whole (and I mean whole) credit card style sim card into it, into a slot between the battery and the main body of the machine. Old Tech but was so revolutionary, that was in 1997 (before that I had a pager....yep....a pager). Great video Mr Mobile, Will be joining you on here soon:-)

My first experience with a cell phone was when my boss at the time put a phone in the wrecker I drove since that was the only way to get a cell phone, it had to be mounted in your vehicle on a stand with a cord attached to the base and an antenna mounted on the roof. LOL! I absolutely loved it, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. The phone and installation cost about a $1000 at that time which would be at least $1500 in today's money. All you could do is make calls on it but it was great.
