Thanks for an interesting look back. As a kid in the sixties I read Popular Mechanics although usually I read the the electronics magazines of the day, of which there were several. I don't remember this particular article but the authors' name is familiar. Seems to me he wrote many articles for Popular Electronics, a sister magazine to Popular Mechanics as well as others. I couldn't afford to buy one of their recommended receivers but did as many others did, I used a surplus radio from WW2. For me I believe it was a R-1155 from a Lancaster bomber. A radio I later found out was quite familiar to my dad as he used one a lot on trips to Europe in the early 40's. If you do an online search these magazines and many others are available to read on the internet. While the information may be old there can be a lot of useful stuff. The ham mags. of the day ran many construction articles that could still be useful today. I enjoyed the vid, thanks for sharing.

I preferred Popular Electronics. My first project was a one watt, one tube CW transmitter from the mag.

in the mid 70s some standup comedian described Margaret Whitlam as the centrefold pet for Popular Mechanics.

I like to search for "Popular Mechanics 1902-2016 archive" and there they are.
