Retro Review: Yaesu FRG-7 receiver

I've done a few videos on the FRG-7 and the Wadley Loop on my channel too - fun radio to operate. I have one that was sold through the Sears department store in the US - it has a SEARS brand label on it, not Yaesu, but it is the identical radio.

Peter, I have the same receiver except it has a Sears and Roebuck label. The look is great and functionality is OK.

Thats a tank! I have not seen it before how you had to use all those methods to tune to a frequency. Definitely old school! 🤓

Very Interesting Peter. I have it's big brother, the FRG-7700, which I got in 1982. My first real communications receiver. This model is more conventional, has a digital dial, and covers 150 KHz. to 30 MHz. in 1 MHz. steps. Great receiver. I have only had to repair it once in 40 years! 73, Shlomo 4X4LF

Oh yes, the first foray into ham radio, sold to me (2nd hand) by "Bernie and Brenda". It takes pride of place on my comms room shelves. The "Frog seven", giving cb users their window on what was available with some work!

I inherited one of these. Haven't tried to learn how to use it yet. Was considering trying it out when the hurricane helane came through and flooded everything and killed power and water for two weeks. Wasnt sure if powering the radio off a generator when the radio plug does not have a ground prong. Didn't want to mess anything up.

👍Thanks for video Peter. Testament to the stability that you can decode FT8 OK with it. Never used an FRG-7 but certainly remember their were very popular when I first started as an SWL in early 80s. Looking forward to Wadley Loop video.

So guys like to turn dials . If so this is the receiver for them ! I have one and enjoy it . Very sensitive and has a good speaker. Mine has fine tune nobe and if you like SSB fine tune is a must but if AM is you thing it's no big deal . Thanks for the video.

Great video, yes it was my first rxer, was also looking at the current realistic rxer, at the time , but glad I bought frg7, I model it and put mech ssb filter in , but I still have 2 one the standard model and the frog7 d, the digital readout version . The only other receiver from yaesu was the fr101 which was ham band only . 73s mark G8rde

Great video Peter. The FRG-7 is an interesting receiver. I always wanted one but never did. I do have a Drake SSR-1 (made by Seiwa) which is also a Barlow-Wadley Loop design. It's a nice radio but not without its quirks. I do like that I can fill it with D cells and take it away from home where I am hammered by QRM on the shortwave broadcast bands from VDSL.

An indoor antenna will rarely give good results so should be avoided if possible. Try various lengths of wire around the room first. Then try a small receiving loop with variable capacitor.

I have an FRG-7700 that I really like, and also the Sears version of the FRG-7 (412.36380700). Haven't had much time to play with the Sears, but it does work. Both are great radios.
