Years ago, I was stopped by a State Cop on Rt. 2 in central MA - while he was running my plate, I noticed he had a sniper badge on his tunic. I'm a shooter, and I asked him what rifle he's use if he were sniping. He announced proudly 'I have a pre-64 Winchester 70!' - to which I replied - 'I've always been a K98 kind of guy.' We argued for about 10 minutes until he got another call - he turned to me, said "I have to go - BUT YOU'RE WRONG' and left. Got out of a ticket lol.

Retro rifles are making a comeback for a few reasons: 1. Sometimes to go forward in skill, you have to go backwards in technology. Learning how to use A2 sights is a great skill, since they can be used to determine range, properly lead a target, and dial in bullet drop. 2. Lighter rifles are more mobile rifles. 3. They are cool.

Two buddies of mine hate retro rifles because they think modern AR15s are the best, while the old school rifles don't fire 223 and parts aren't identical, when it's the same damn rifle. To me, I think retro rifles like the XM177E2, CAR15, and the M16A2 were the best and are still being used today by numerous militaries and law enforcement.

Larping is a good way to train your body and mind. Larping is helps you do *Combat Conditioning given that all the weight on you will help you do good cardio.* In reality would you ever see the need to field your entire battle gears in a SHTF in the USA? Probably not. If the world was to end like in *Fall Out Video Game Series* or something like the *Purge Movie* happening then yeah Larping would definitely be good.
@gordonjohnson405
@gordonjohnson405 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe not LARPing. Maybe its a better idea to focus on, and return to, the basics thoroughly and often? Maybe the time for full kit is when you start to incorporate collective training? When you start to add 'move' and 'communicate' to the 'shoot'? I am not playing down the LARPing as much as I am advocating prioritization so the things you use in each step add to, rather than distract from, the quality of the training you do.

The most appealing aspect of these early to mid 90's builds is that they were a product of a time of huge innovation. As you alluded to, the industry has experimented with many subtle changes to what was being run then, but for the most part haven't found a solution that is objectively better. What these guys came up with on their own has stayed the test of time and continue to prove that they are among the most optimal setups.

So long as you take care of your guns, and can hit what you aim at - just about any gun from the last 100 years can do the job. Rather, simplicity is best, especially during times of crisis and survival. Your electronics, NVGs, red dots etc. can be gone in an instant with an EMP attack (something that will get common in future wars). The more complicated a setup, the easier things break, and the harder it is to find replacement parts. Good old iron sights don't turn off.

The two biggest advancements ARs have made over the years is their triggers and gas blocks. With adjustable drop in triggers that are as good or better than you can get in high-end bolt action rifles. Plus the prevalence of easily adjustable gas blocks which allows a rifle to easily run any ammunition you want without problems & makes shooting surpressed reliable.

Let’s not forget the fact that the A2 M203 hand guard absolutely screams, “Say hello to my little friend!” Retro rifles have definitely made a comeback. I love the soft shooting rifle length system combined with the (surprisingly accurate at range) classic iron sight picture of the carry handle/fixed fsp pinned to a 20” barrel. Of course, shorty’s are super compact, easily maneuverable and have the uncanny ability to immediately turn keyboard commandos into operators. I’ve been a fan of the CAR-15 since I first saw Val Kilmer’s in Heat(which also was my introduction to the FAL). My mom let me rent it (upon it’s original release to VHS) when I was 13 and well on my way to to gun nerd. Blood Diamond was great and I absolutely the love the Danny Archer setup. 2004-2005 I was in Iraq and ran a M16A2 during my tour. I didn't change anything on it. The bulk of the soldiers I was there with opted to go with a M4 carbine. The 20' barrel gave me better range and accuracy than the shorter carbines. Old iron sights don't go down because the batteries die. A little bit to white paint and ambient light works great. Cool thing about a 20” barrel is the increase in velocity. Really making the most of that bullet. Where it gets interesting is when you start playing with twist and grain. I just switched out a 16” 556 barrel on one of my older builds for a 20” 223 wylde. So far it’s been a fun gun, way more accurate at long distance but the weight took alittle getting used to.

@@Parcolai Im not just talking about the 'reliability trope' but the actual design. Shotguns are about fit and fitment and having something work as a natural extension of yourself. To work properly, a shotgun must be designed to be reliable, smooth, balanced and point well. For instance if you switch out barrel length, bead sight etc it adversely affects the interface between your brain, body and weapon. These holistic attributes that make a shotgun work as part of your body for hitting a clay target also translate to lighting fast target acquisition in a close combat setting. Conversely when you look at some AR builds there is little thought into balance and interface which means there are lots of fancy bells and whistles but the gun handles like crap. People put too much emphasis on accuracy of rifles and not on the overall balance and feel assuming that red dot on target equals accuracy.

Same here. Joined the Army in '95 (still in) I still love the M16A2 with solid stock and 20" barrel. The extra reach over the M4 gives it the #1 favorite for me. And of course carried the M4 and M-9 for 3 GWOT OIF 2005-06, 2007-08, and 2009-10, So I love that with the quad rail. Now everything is MLOK.

Personally, I love the fact that the longer barrels are starting to make a comeback. I caught a lot of flack for building a 20 inch rifle, but with the 1:7 twist with a heavier profile it is a beast when running MK262 ammo, or other heavier (69+grn) loads, out at distance. Plus, being able to achieve 2800+fps velocities with said heavy rounds gives me the ability to reach out and touch effectively at longer ranges, which suits the open environment of the great plains much more. I don't have to worry about fitting into helicopters, APCs, or other vehicles, so why not take advantage of the longer barrel.

For civilian rifles, longer barrels have always made more sense. Long barrels were the rule back in the 80s, then carbines became popular in the 90s then longer barrels were popular again by the regular rifleman and SBR with SOF. So unless someone really wants something similar to what operators use, you'd want to go long gun as a civilian.

If you think about it, optics and lights/lasers are really the only advancement since the 60's. The M4 was necessary to redice weight because early attachments were heavy, but now that they're smaller and lighter, they can easily go on 20-inch rifles again. That's why when I designed my AR build, I started with an A1 and only "modernized" it by giving it a flat top. So now I essentially have an A1 with a variable optic and a weapon light mounted to the front sight base. It still has triangular handgaurds and everything and looks pretty cool.

I remember being oddly confused when after countless nights of research, I basically came to the conclusion that, the closer to the original design you got with the specs, the more reliable and functional it would be.

I don't know how I missed this one, but this video is a banger. Holy crap. As far as retro goes, I used that stuff in the Army, and I gotta say that the adaptations from the base platform had value, but just like everything, it's mission dependent. As a civilian we chase just about everything, and we do it because we don't have to literally sleep with a goddamned rifle every day of our lives, so we don't actually know what works and where. The old A2 stocks kinda suck. The good is that you never have to worry about it, and you can buttstroke a motherfucker out (ask me how I know). No SOPMOD BS needed. That thing will rock. But it doesn't adjust, and that has value when you're wearing a PC and having to clear rooms. You want to tuck and get short. I've come full circle on the handle. The truth is that those irons were basically the best. Everything else is just an expensive take with less overall function. The height issue is so on point when Mike covers it. I'm over a decade removed from service now and got back into NVD's, bought a used car worth of gear because I couldn't remember how the hell I aimed in the middle of the night. Turns out I'm a dumbass and just needed a $15 handle with a red dot mounted to the top and a light duct taped to my hand guard. On handguards, today's shit is heavy. And unnecessary. You're not inserting 9-12 inches of picatinny into anything, so why do you have it? I do because I'm a dumbass, and now I have a rifle that weighs 10.5 lbs unloaded. And the worst part? I can't even launch 40mm rounds from all that weight. The 203 handguard is menacingly cool. But it's also hot as balls when you get going on the round count. You also don't have a forward handle with the 203, and because it gets so front heavy after a few hours of derping around, you get pretty gassed. The 20" barrel is banana's though. It blows hard trying to work from a vehicle or inside a house, but it can be done, and it turns that pea shooter of a round into 3,300 fps Lucifer loin rockets.

I was out before the M4 was in, so my only experience with them is seeing others at the range. For me the big take away about the "modern" AR is that they removed a very good sight system and replaced it with something much more complicated. Sure, now you can put any sight system on your rifle. But you can now knock any sight system *off* your rifle. Or install it so badly you can't hit the side of a barn at point blank. There's always several M4 types at the range and there's always a couple having optics/sights issues. You just don't get that on the og set-up
