Years ago, I was stopped by a State Cop on Rt. 2 in central MA - while he was running my plate, I noticed he had a sniper badge on his tunic. I'm a shooter, and I asked him what rifle he's use if he were sniping. He announced proudly 'I have a pre-64 Winchester 70!' - to which I replied - 'I've always been a K98 kind of guy.' We argued for about 10 minutes until he got another call - he turned to me, said "I have to go - BUT YOU'RE WRONG' and left. Got out of a ticket lol.

Retro rifles are making a comeback for a few reasons: 1. Sometimes to go forward in skill, you have to go backwards in technology. Learning how to use A2 sights is a great skill, since they can be used to determine range, properly lead a target, and dial in bullet drop. 2. Lighter rifles are more mobile rifles. 3. They are cool.

Two buddies of mine hate retro rifles because they think modern AR15s are the best, while the old school rifles don't fire 223 and parts aren't identical, when it's the same damn rifle. So long as you take care of your guns, and can hit what you aim at - just about any gun from the last 100 years can do the job. Rather, simplicity is best, especially during times of crisis and survival. Let’s not forget the fact that the A2 M203 hand guard absolutely screams, “Say hello to my little friend!” Retro rifles have definitely made a comeback. I love the soft shooting rifle length system combined with the (surprisingly accurate at range) classic iron sight picture of the carry handle/fixed fsp pinned to a 20” barrel. Of course, shorty’s are super compact, easily maneuverable and have the uncanny ability to immediately turn keyboard commandos into operators. I’ve been a fan of the CAR-15 since I first saw Val Kilmer’s in Heat(which also was my introduction to the FAL). My mom let me rent it (upon it’s original release to VHS) when I was 13 and well on my way to to gun nerd. Blood Diamond was great and I absolutely the love the Danny Archer setup. Your content is always brilliantly comedic, educational and informative but for me, this video had the added bonus of nostalgia. Doc GT, you are a man among men and I salute you.

2004-2005 I was in Iraq and ran a M16A2 during my tour. I didn't change anything on it. The bulk of the soldiers I was there with opted to go with a M4 carbine. The 20' barrel gave me better range and accuracy than the shorter carbines. Old iron sights don't go down because the batteries die. A little bit to white paint and ambient light works great. Just my two cents.

@ColoradoStreaming3 жыл бұрын
@@Parcolai Im not just talking about the 'reliability trope' but the actual design. Shotguns are about fit and fitment and having something work as a natural extension of yourself. To work properly, a shotgun must be designed to be reliable, smooth, balanced and point well. For instance if you switch out barrel length, bead sight etc it adversely affects the interface between your brain, body and weapon. These holistic attributes that make a shotgun work as part of your body for hitting a clay target also translate to lighting fast target acquisition in a close combat setting. Conversely when you look at some AR builds there is little thought into balance and interface which means there are lots of fancy bells and whistles but the gun handles like crap. People put too much emphasis on accuracy of rifles and not on the overall balance and feel assuming that red dot on target equals accuracy.

Personally, I love the fact that the longer barrels are starting to make a comeback. I caught a lot of flack for building a 20 inch rifle, but with the 1:7 twist with a heavier profile it is a beast when running MK262 ammo, or other heavier (69+grn) loads, out at distance. Plus, being able to achieve 2800+fps velocities with said heavy rounds gives me the ability to reach out and touch effectively at longer ranges, which suits the open environment of the great plains much more. I don't have to worry about fitting into helicopters, APCs, or other vehicles, so why not take advantage of the longer barrel.

If you think about it, optics and lights/lasers are really the only advancement since the 60's. The M4 was necessary to redice weight because early attachments were heavy, but now that they're smaller and lighter, they can easily go on 20-inch rifles again. That's why when I designed my AR build, I started with an A1 and only "modernized" it by giving it a flat top. So now I essentially have an A1 with a variable optic and a weapon light mounted to the front sight base. It still has triangular handgaurds and everything and looks pretty cool.

I don't know how I missed this one, but this video is a banger. Holy crap. As far as retro goes, I used that stuff in the Army, and I gotta say that the adaptations from the base platform had value, but just like everything, it's mission dependent. As a civilian we chase just about everything, and we do it because we don't have to literally sleep with a goddamned rifle every day of our lives, so we don't actually know what works and where. The old A2 stocks kinda suck. The good is that you never have to worry about it, and you can buttstroke a motherfucker out (ask me how I know). No SOPMOD BS needed. That thing will rock. But it doesn't adjust, and that has value when you're wearing a PC and having to clear rooms. You want to tuck and get short. I've come full circle on the handle. The truth is that those irons were basically the best. Everything else is just an expensive take with less overall function. The height issue is so on point when Mike covers it. I'm over a decade removed from service now and got back into NVD's, bought a used car worth of gear because I couldn't remember how the hell I aimed in the middle of the night. Turns out I'm a dumbass and just needed a $15 handle with a red dot mounted to the top and a light duct taped to my hand guard. On handguards, today's shit is heavy. And unnecessary. You're not inserting 9-12 inches of picatinny into anything, so why do you have it? I do because I'm a dumbass, and now I have a rifle that weighs 10.5 lbs unloaded. And the worst part? I can't even launch 40mm rounds from all that weight. The 203 handguard is menacingly cool. But it's also hot as balls when you get going on the round count. You also don't have a forward handle with the 203, and because it gets so front heavy after a few hours of derping around, you get pretty gassed. The 20" barrel is banana's though. It blows hard trying to work from a vehicle or inside a house, but it can be done, and it turns that pea shooter of a round into 3,300 fps Lucifer loin rockets.

I was out before the M4 was in, so my only experience with them is seeing others at the range. For me the big take away about the "modern" AR is that they removed a very good sight system and replaced it with something much more complicated. Sure, now you can put any sight system on your rifle. But you can now knock any sight system *off* your rifle. Or install it so badly you can't hit the side of a barn at point blank. There's always several M4 types at the range and there's always a couple having optics/sights issues. You just don't get that on the og set-up

Excellent video. Love the older style rifles, and I've found their owners to be solid as well. Watched a GenX shooter massacre the range with his new M1A tanker two weeks ago, while two Gucci-gunners with Honey Badgers and a Valmet just stood there agog. Training is definitely the X factor. Cool breakdown; thanks.

You see how clothing took a turn for the retro. Even things like music, the oldies saw a comeback the last few years. Can’t beat classic load outs and returning to retro is something I love.

older music is far better than this new crap. I grew up on 60-90s music and love it. New movies are all gimmicks and action. older movies were better stories, better characters, more emotion, better pacing, more subtle, made you think, etc.

As a young guy, I prefer older stuff from before my time when it comes to many things. I think it has to do with all the postmodernist dystopia stuff going on right now that has many of us instinctively revolting to older things.
@ryanphillips41233 жыл бұрын
@@CaesarGB yeah you have an excellent point. Its clear that as the years go by, things come and go, however, Now it FEELS like EVERYTHING is getting worse all the time. That's not exactly true, a lot of aspects of life are genuinely getting worse but many good things are staying the same and at least a few good things are around the corner I'm sure. But because it feels that way for many people, we are looking for something better, and it's easier to remember the good times we've had than to imaging a better future in a world we don't get to control. Long story short, It's The Age of Nostalgia now.

Honestly, I was trained on an old carry handle M16 in the Marine Corps, that’s what I used so I just feel familiar with a carry handle AR. I feel they are more robust and from experience a retro rifle does better under heavy use IMO. Great video guys. Remember… The only school is OLD SCHOOL! 🤡

When something is a work of art, it all "flows" together according to the artist's vision. Replacing major external components of the original AR15 design breaks apart that original artistic vision. There's just something special about having a solid retro AR without a bunch of gear hanging off of it.

@cjr42863 жыл бұрын
@Vann Junkin I've always liked the A1, but you can't beat an A2's sighting system with iron sights on AR's. I think if they had stuck with a lightweight barrel but increased the twist rate, and if they had kept full auto instead of burst, the M16a2 would have been perfect. Thankfully, in the civilian world we are free to build our AR's the way we like (except for full auto....for now....).

I went something similar on my recce rifle, it’s also a 308, albeit in a 16” because I couldn’t find an 18” at the time I was building it. Back end is a Magpul UBR Gen 1 because it feels like an A2 and I hate the cheek weld on the majority of collapsible stocks.
