Retrofitting CarPlay with Sony XAV-AX1005DB: Is It Worth It?

In the same boat with you. Using an 2014 Auris and want CarPlay, and this Sony is the cheapest unit having CarPlay and rotary volume control, no touchpad or other hard to reach control. It comes with microphone? How is the quality of the calls?

Having a rotary control for the volume is very nice and yes it does come with an external microphone. I have it stuck next to my mirror pointing towards me and I’ve had no complaints from callers about being able to hear me. Alternatively, I think you can clip it onto your vanity mirror, however I wanted to keep it out the way. Hope this helps, consider subscribing to see more!

Does this model allow for multiple phones connected at the same time? Can’t find that in the specs anywhere.

No, you connect the phone through a usb cable, and it's one at a time.

What kind of USB A adapter do you have there? Do you think its possible to move the USB port from front to back on this unit?

I used a USB right-angle adapter from Amazon, it's quite generic and can be found from a bunch of different brands. I don't think you can move the USB port to the back though, although I imagine you could route a cable around the dash.

Unfortunately not, this model only supports CarPlay. However I believe Sony also make a different model that only supports Android Auto. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

Unfortunately i bought for my car which working with some extra speakers 2 amps and a subwoofer but the sub sound is so poor i changed it with a kenwood 2 din with 4v pre out (10year old )and the sound become amazing and too much power

Bud, can you do me a massive favour? Im looking to buy this head unit and my main need is one that fast forwards songs. Does this device have a way to skip through tracks? My music is sometimes 7 minutes a song, and it drives me mad that i can't fast-forward or drag the song to the correct spot. Any help would make you a legend. Thanks.

Hi, sorry I don't use this anymore (I now have a different car) but I believe across CarPlay regardless of unit that it does not support audio scrubbing. I never really used the Sony interface unfortunately so can't comment for that.

Nice video, how was the installation process?

Installation was pretty straightforward, the main thing I found was just making sure all the wires were connected correctly so it retained its settings (time/date etc) when the ignition was off. Hope this helps!

I would recommend an in-place upgrade, this "updates" Windows using external installation media and allows you to keep your files (although I'd still recommend a backup, just in case!).
