At the centre of Ireland’s incredibly ambitious climate change commitments is an extraordinary target to deep retrofit at least 500,000 homes in the next ten years. This would represent a 50-fold increase in home upgrades in Ireland. What would it take to realise this goal?
Over the last 20 years, Eco Eye has reported on the need for Ireland to invest heavily in upgrading our buildings for both environmental and health reasons. This new national goal to upgrade Ireland’s building stock has never been more ambitious or more necessary.
A new home built today is unrecognisable in energy performance from any built 12 or more years ago, because of much stronger regulations, far superior construction standards and new technologies. This new energy performance standard is what all of our older buildings must strive towards, to meet the energy and climate change challenge of the next 30 years. But the Irish Government don’t have the power to directly retrofit our buildings or force homeowners to comply with new standards for older builds. It’s only homeowners that can make the decision to upgrade. So what would it take to turn this ambition into a reality? The episode will explore new policies, financial models and technologies relevant to homeowners considering retrofitting a home and will explore what this will mean for jobs, fuel costs and property prices in the years ahead.

Heat pumps are definitely not suitable for all houses, which quite a few installers claim. It needs highly insulated and very much draft free houses which then also require a moist control installation. You'd need A LOT of cash for that. If I'd install EUR 70K in my house I'd be in negative equity forever, there's simply no chance. Just plumped for a 2nd solar array, much more manageable and recouped in about 10 years.

Why do I get the sense that the island of Ireland, but also Scotland and Wales, seem to care more about their own people than they do in England?

Okay, so €42k net cost to homeowner (you have to claim back the €28k after paying the €70k?) Spread that €42k over the years you have left in the house (let's say 30y) and it's €1400pa (+interest) and then your heating bill on top, which has to be at least €1000pa. So you're looking at something approaching €3000 per year? Doesn't make economic sense.

There probably is an economic benefit in terms of the value of the home in terms of resale value, particularly if these grants are later phased out.

Plus there's also the reduced interest payment from the potential green rate mortgages.

Do you measure the comfort of a warm house only by the reduction in your bills? Why not simply be happy to have a house that’s always warm?

Not quite following what you are saying. Is it that your bills are much higher with the heat pump than with the gas combi boiler? If so it wouldn't be the first time I've heard that.
