I installed an HIS Radeon X1650 into a computer. I installed a Radeon X1650 Pro to a Pentium 4 HT Socket 478 machine clocked at 2.6 Ghz. I thought that it was a Radeon X1950 at first glance. The system is a business grade machine an HP Compaq D530 Convertible Minitower. The power supply is a 420W Antec power supply that I obtained with the card. Anyone who knows anything about these Business grade HP Compaq machines knows that the major hurdle with these machines is getting a power supply that fits the screw holes which this power supply almost does.

Really cool. I tried making a build with an Athlon 64 3200+ and an ATI Radeon x800 GTO AGP card. The thing that bothered me was the GPU fan, it's quite loud and makes an annoying sound, I see that many cards in this video do the same. I don't remember GPUs being this loud in the past but it has been a very long time so I might be wrong. Does anyone know other options of making the build more silent? back in the day these were new, I remember having gone through about six RMA's of a 9800 Pro from ATI itself, because each successive one was worse than the last, none of them fixed the problems I was having with KOTOR, and even with literally reformatting and reinstalling windows fresh for every monthly driver release, I couldn't get Half Life 2 to perform as well on the same resolution and settings as the benchmark data would imply, even when I had a faster CPU and more RAM than the site's test system. At the time I *finally* got upgraded in an RMA to a 512MB X1600 pro, which did work... until it abruptly died right after the "refurbished" warranty ended. In desperation, I bought the only thing I could afford.. an HD 3650 AGP, which itself was basically BSOD'ing in windows all the damn time, and refused to accept the stock Radeon drivers no matter how many times or from how many sources I would install from. Literally, my only relief, was later getting an nvidia 6600GT from BFG. It might not have benchmarked as high, but it actually effing worked until I was able to upgrade to a PCI-E based system.

I've never seen a floppy or molex power connector on a gpu before, interesting stuff!
@IronicTonic85 жыл бұрын
Molex and Floppy power connectors were the normal method of powering a GPU before PCI-E existed (during the AGP era, about 2004 and older).
@blingking5015 жыл бұрын
@@IronicTonic8 I'm listening buddy, I have seen molex and pcie connectors. it's just the floppy connector what got me. I have a xfx 680i Lt socket 775 and that has a molex on the motherboard for PCI cards that needs "extra power".
@ZeroHourProductions4075 жыл бұрын
The not widely released Voodoo 6000 had its own sort of external PSU (basically a grand-daddy ancestor to those E-power boards we see now for extreme overclocks) because even the single molex they provided the Voodoo 5500 wasn't exactly trusted to power four discrete VSA100 video chips. ATI used the floppy connector first with the Radeon 9500 and 9700 cards. It didn't last terribly long probably because floppy drives were still kind of needed then, and one was lucky to even have two of those without the need of an adapter. So while it was probably great for ergonomic reasons, it was crazy inconvenient when a good majority of the install base likely had to share that connector with the actual floppy drive the system needed at times to function.

Ahh, I remember this time in my pc gaming life... painfully, however. After my first 9800 Pro died because of Doom 3, from that point I went through six straight RMA's. the first five of which were just 9800 pro swaps which went from Samsung memory to Hynix memory. ATI refused to admit there was a problem, but all of them were markedly terrible. Not just in game compatibility, but well, flat out even being stable at clocks I was already enjoying with the original unit. Even when all else was equal, the Hynix based 9800 Pro's all performed worse than the Samsung equipped unit did in Half Life 2, which is hilarious because the benchmarks I based my purchase of the card on, were using a test system that had less RAM and a slower CPU than I had at the time. I had to press on this for them to finally consider letting me get a different model. In the end, I received an X1600 Pro, which, while fast enough to comfortably run the game, died conveniently after the refurb warranty ran out on the card. Needless to say, when it was still ATI, I hated the Radeon brand with a passion.
@talvisota3275 жыл бұрын
many 9800 cards died back then especially in cases with bad airflow... that card just needed an aftermarket cooler like the ati silencer to get a sufficient cooling
@ZeroHourProductions4075 жыл бұрын
@@talvisota327 i had the arctic silencer, not unlike what was on the HIS brand card in this video. The problem was that drivers were especially terrible. OpenGL performance especially was terrible; even worse than the GeForce FX series, which is saying something. ATI promised endlessly about having a driver that would finally fix it for all. But basically, unless you had an x800 series or newer, they didn't care about you by then. Sadly, now with RDNA on the 5700XT finally addressing the weaknesses of GCN, i expect the FineWine to finally peter out for the architecture. The radeon group is famous for just flat out dropping driver support earlier and more often than nvidia. That they held on to GCN for this long is a surprise to me.
