Note - The Retroid section might end up being a little wonky. I recorded before the pricing announcement, and then after, and I think most of my thoughts from pre announcement ended up being overwritten by the pricing they announced. Sorry if it all comes out as jumbled! Android 10 and 6GB of RAM make the Retroid Pocket 5 seem weird. Those are both steps back from the 4 Pro, and hurt Switch emulation and HD textures and more. Even the included 128GB storage size hurts for Android games which have to be installed on the internal. Android 10 also stopped receiving security updates a year ago.

SD865 just barely meets the min reqs for "swatch emu" anyway, so the 6gb ram is "fine" android 10 doesnt have stupid scoped storage either, so you all can load up a giant 1tb sd card if you want and have no problems 128gb internal should be enough for most people its mostly a side step for people who bought rp4 or rp4p, but its huge for anyone who was waiting for better

I’m with you on RP Mini but the price is too rich at $199 RRP for a 3.7” device. The RP5 at just $20 more will sell like hot cakes but I expect a price of $10-$20 price drop for the mini. I get that it’s a Snapdragon with a great resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio but I think most people will see it as just a bit too pricey. All the best Joey.

I want a handheld smaller than my Steam Deck that can play GC & PS2 comfortably. The RP5 fits that best I think regarding price and ergonomics, at least I hope. I'll still wait for my most trusted reviewers like Joey to review the devices first before I purchase even tho the early bird & pre release prices are tempting. Almost every Retroid device had problems in the beginning for each release whether that was screen issues, trigger issues, etc. It sucks for people that already have a RP4PRO tho. I don't have one but the RP5 is not a substantial upgrade over the 4Pro. Having only 6 GB of RAM is a bummer. I will definitely not use 4 GB of virtual ram like Retroid said on their Twitter page cuz that can lower the life of the device. Should've just given us 8 GB of RAM like in the 4Pro

@@serpserpserp screen issues like ghosting and wrong colors showing up on the screen like white would become pink as one of the several example problems that would happen, kernel errors, some system partition failure, and faulty triggers. All the issues have obviously been fixed since then but there were quite a bit of issues with the 4Pro early on

Surprised with no mention of Astro Bot in the game news section. IMO It's a relevant game to most retrogamers since it's receiving widespread acclaim and it's probably going down as one of the best 3D platformers ever. It's the only non Nintendo game of the genre that has that Mario quality. Really like these news videos, keep it up Joey.

I just don't get how there can only be a $10 difference in the RP5 and the mini in the pre-order. I mean there are a lot of differences there. I also just can do sub 5 inch screens anymore. If I need something pocketable to take with me to kill time I just take the Miyoo Mini + As it is pretty indestructible and can always find something to kill time with on a flight etc. But I'm always squinting!

I get the feeling the RP5 is a change in direction moreso than a generational leap. The fact the power of the 5 and Mini are identical makes me think this is the point where Retroid is kinda done with having a large assortment of performances and they might utilize this chip more in the future (akin to what Anbernic has been doing, though obviously not to as egregious an extent). I get the feeling the 4 basic hasnt been moving as much as they'd like and the idea is to just make what would be a "pro" model the base going forward.

If you are looking for something in that price range bigger than a rp4p, rp5 is your only choice in addition to a heavily discounted pocket air (if you can find one). The rg556 no longer make sense with the release of the rp5, unless you buy it during those sales where you might be able to get it down to 150 with AliExpress coins etc.

The Retroid 5 is very interessting for me, the Odin 2 Mini is pretty expensive and I found the snapdragon 8 gen 2 a bit overkill for what I want to play on it plus the 5,5 inch oled screen vs the 5 inch mini led screen at pretty much the same form factor is also a big plus. The only "meh moment" are the 6gb ram though, how much more expensive can it be to put 8gb in there instead.

They messed up on the Retroid 5. The 4 had the perfect shape and look. It's distinct, you KNOW it's a Retroid by glancing at it, the colors are great (never been a fan of red and their red is great). Now they lose their shape, make it more generic, and put a horrible glass front (why?!?!). Which means no transparent cases to boot. Why do companies do this???

I agree, the cell phone shape and official grip was like their thing, their signature. Now it looks like every other hand held with built in grips. The only thing i like is bezel less screen, but the full glass front will make it more fragile, glare, and smudgy. I dont own the 4. Android 10 and 6gb ram is not good.

thanks for another update joey - i was wondering if you could answer a question for me - i just bought the rg556 and added some ps2 games - some of the games slow down quite badly after a few minutes of play and some like killzone just stop completely and then goes back to the game select screen - what are thoughts - do u think its a emulator problem? thanks joey

I agree this magic x situation doesn't feel right. They should be taking the situation much more seriously. If someone had the time and money they could easily sue. force full refunds and compensation

Does Chinese law give Chinese citizens grounds for a law suit, in this instance? Who knows, maybe making AMR complaints has a better impact in China, than BBB in the US or similar in other countries, even if you're not Chinese. You lose way more money hiring a lawyer to press a civil suit in China over $50 where at best you get awarded $500 damages, at maximum. You'll be losing more an hour than you would be awarded. People with the time and money, value their time and money too much to waste it over $50 they knew was a gamble on a toy, in the first place. If they're going to go scorched earth on something it won't be a trite scam. They have better more positive things to do with their resources. Take the L and learn from your mistake. Don't repeat it. Whatever that mistake was. Educate others to learn the easy way from your mistake, target then the hard way being scammed. Be more informed, wait for the Guinea pig results first. Don't preorder. Only use a form of payment where you know you decide if you get your money back. etc, etc. China wants all, only for Chinese. GL with that western class action mind set over a $50 handheld scam. Even if Magic X hadn't gathered their gullible flock, they'd probably just be back under a new name. At least not everyone will keep falling for this 💩. The only thing I can do is not support Magic X (which I've not ever bought Magic X and don't forsee a redemption arc, so probably won't ever), AliExpress, buy less Chinese goods, when I can afford it. I've got more than I can handle just trying to get three meals a day and a shower. I gotta get my own house in order first.

Do you have the 4 or 4Pro? The RP5 is not a substantial upgrade over the 4Pro. It is an upgrade over the 4Pro however in terms of screen and ergonomics. The RP5 is an upgrade from the nonpro version of the 4. If you got the 4Pro within the last few months, I would wait for the next device to come out and keep enjoying the 4Pro. If you got the 4Pro at launch, I'd at least think about it. But, if you got the nonpro version, then I would definitely upgrade to the RP5

I think Retroid missed perfectly reasonable opportunity to move on to left stick centric design. They are offering Mini at the same time for retro purists out there, their chip of choice is now even more capable of wide screen contents that are not slow paced PSP RPGs or VNs, they even have friggin GameCube colorway! Did GC have d-pad on top? I don't think so. Anyways I'm going to hold out until either Retroid puts left stick on top, or Odin/mini gets nice screen with much smaller bezel.

This is my perspective as well. The reason I got the RG cube was because it had the left joystick up top. It makes no sense when you upgrade your chips to focus on playing PS2/GC/Wii games to not have the left joystick on top and dpad below. Ill wait for GammaOS for the RGCube to see if itll improve some performance.

At the benchmarks I looked at the Dimensity was better in most ways by like 1-10%. Only difference is you get worse BT and Wifi with the 865, but being a Snapdragon family chip means it's been coded for way more and with it in mind. Where no one's coding for Mediatek. THOUGH, seriously with how common MALI is, emulators really should be coded with those in mind.

Retroid should cancel the product and preorder and make the RP5 with OLED 5,5'' 8/128 Android 13 and D1100 inside like the RP4+ and sell like that, forget about Snapdragon until RP6 when they can have full Android 12/13 support, selling now the RP5 with 6GB and Android 10 it's a tremendous mistake, I read hundred of negative comments about it that could ruin everything with 5/Mini experience SD865 it's a good processor and dual OS is awesome, but people expect the same as RP4+ with bigger screen, that's all we need ATM!

The pro version is the same price as the 64 GB LCD Steam Deck at launch. I already have a Steam Deck so I'm not going to get the Odin 2 Mini pro, at least not for a good long while until I can save up enough to afford it. I do want a smaller form factor that can play most if not all GC & PS2 games comfortably but at an affordable price. Even $340 for the base Odin 2 Mini is too rich for me right now

why rp5 a 200 dollars is a no brainer if an rg556 shipped costs 160 dollars or less? Same screen, maybe even better ergonomics, shipping cost included (aliexpress), and GammaOs (no more sticks issue)?

An rg556 isn't always 160 either, officially still going for 185. They need to be officially lower it to around 150 to be worth recommending to people once the rp5 release.

Sudachi works pretty well on Android 10 for Switch emulation. As Joey mentioned, there is a Yuzu build specifically for Android 10. This has been used on the Pimax Portal.

They're hall effect sticks, are you sure? They calibrate on boot, so make sure they're not touched when you turn on the device.

Going to try and turn back on and see if still doing it but honestly not holding my breath bro dpad works fine but left stick is wild man gonna switch on one last time and if does it again still must be a faulty part or something mate gutted coz I returned my og Odin 2 because of r2 and freezing issues.

Listening to you complaining about getting free handhelds to talk about what they are and what they do is sad! If someone bought it before you reviewed it then obviously they don't need you. But for others that know nothing like me about anything, and wouldn't know what these are and what they are capable of doing without videos from people like you and thus wouldn't buy anything you are a blessing. So relax and be happy for the life you have. There are a hell of a lot worse jobs you could have in life like digging a ditch or flipping burgers for minimum wage with a piece of sheit boss. I personally can't wait til a handheld comes out that has a 4t or 12T mini disc of games like the hyper spin. I would gladly pay 5 to 7 hundred if it has a great battery great cooling and a top end mini SSD
