Retroid Pocket 5 on TV and External Monitor

In this video, I test how the Retroid Pocket 5 looks on external monitors and TVs. It is running on 1440p on the first portable touchscreen monitor, 4k on the computer monitor and 4k on the TV.
In all situations, the picture looks great and it runs well, too.
The only possible issue I could see was some latency when using a bluetooth controller on the TV. This may be to do with the fact it was running at only 30hz. I will try again later with a cable capable of running 4k 60hz.

I found this video super useful as someone with the 3+ (where I experience nearly unplayable bluetooth input latency.) I've been put off using the 3+ in docked mode for anything other than media consumption - but I'm feeling really motivated by the results you shared here. I'm glad you found it useful! I was feeling some latency when connected to the TV but I didn't on the other devices so that might be because of the poor quality 4k 30p cable. I'll do some more testing on it later!

Great video, as are the other ones as well. Love the enthusiasm in your voice. Keep up the great work. One (or two words)...if this Dell27" monitor is somewhere similar to the one I have - the usb hub requires an additional usb 3.0 cable to be connected to the computer. I don't know if you've connected it in any way to rp5. If not, it has no way of working. Also talking about 30/60fps you shouldn't be using "p" annotation, as it's for resolution (Ike 1080p, 720p etc) not frames per second. Just nit picking there, I enjoyed your videos no matter that. Wondering if you can help, Ryan. I have tried to connect the retroid pocket 5 to various monitors using a usb hub (4k/60fps). But for some reason it keeps giving me a "glitchy, static, fuzzy" (not sure how else to describe it lol) type screen. Is there some setting I need to turn on? The hub works for my mac and over devices, just not with the retroid

Probably not as most tablets don't have video input ports. It would depend on the tablet rather than the RP5

Hi Ryan! I focused my attention on your other video about split-screen mode and just lost this one! I tried to use an external dock as in the above mentioned video but then I just realized that here you're always using just an ordinary usb-c cable. Am I right? I tried different docks but what I'm getting is just an intolerable lagging both for video and audio.

I've used a Usb C - HDMI cable and also a USB C hub. Both of them have some lag for me so far. The HDMI connection definitely needs work!

Could you tell me if you can assign where the audio output will go when you have a usb monitor plugged in? Certain devices seem to want to just force the audio through the USB connection to whatever (monitor) is connected on the other end but there are times I'd want to use headphones connected to the the audio jack while using an external display.

There is an app in the play store which can choose the audio output as you like, i don't remember it's name, but it's an icon with a bear with headset, if i remember, tomorrow i will write to you the name

Thanks for doing these tests. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be working. I have the exact Dell monitor with its original USBC cable plugged into the back and the picture just won’t come on from the RP5. All of my cables are very high quality. I’ve spent 2 days tinking and it just won’t show up. It will only work with my Baseus hub set up. Also, I have a Ugreen 9-1 game dock and it just freezes the rP5 wherever I use it, regardless of whether it’s powered or not. Any tips on settings that may be blocking its use? My 8bit do pro 2 controller is also not being connecting to RetroArch in the hubbed mode. Why is this happening to me 🫠

I just tested the monitor again and it's not working now.. When I made this video I was using pre-production firmware. The update to the production firmware must have broken this. How strange!

They also sell a RP docking station. I wonder how well that works of you either use a wired controller on the USB port or a USB dongle and wireless controller..maybe the latency is a lot better then. I can't see myself play action playformers on a TV with input lag. Rather just play the portable handheld then.

I don't think there's any magic in the docking station, it's just a USB hub in a convenient package as far as I can tell.

Sometimes it came out of the monitor and sometimes it came out of the RP5 itself. I'm planning a follow-up video to this next week where I'll look at that in more detail.

You need a 'USB-C to HDMI' cable. The USB-C side goes into the RP5 and the HDMI cable goes into the TV or monitor.

The RP5 screen goes black when you connect an external display. Go to settings -> handheld settings -> connect tv -> 'turn off handheld console's screen'

It's from a Korean company called Crossover. Their monitor names are mostly long serial numbers so I can't recall the exact model number but they sell many similar models for a pretty decent price.

Is the "auto map a controller" option only for Retroid or is this possible on Odin 2 as well? I hear many people complain about always having to remap controllers everytime they dock their device, with stand-alone emulators. 🍻

It's specific to the emulator rather than the device so it should work fine. I do have to keep re-mapping so if I were to use this on a TV more often I'd probably try to stay within an app like ES-DE while it's connected to the TV.

I just played some dolphin on external monitor using a usb-c to hdmi dongle and there was some latency and performance issues- Also the game color was all wrong compared to how great it looks on the handheld mode.

Yes a Steam Deck Dock is essentially just a USB hub and a stand in one. It should have no issues working with any USB dock.

tested my RP5 with my 4K PC monitor but it doesn't work. on the RP5 part, screen freeze or go black then nothing responds anymore. I had to force the switch off with a long press on the power button to get it back. however my USB-C to HDMI cable works properly with PC laptops ?! so, do I need a specific new cable for my RP5 ? my current cable is Thunderbold 3 compliant. is there others protocoles using USB-C to HDMI links ? so, what is the USB-C video protocole required by the RP5 ? also, I note the USB-C at the bottom for charging and playing simultaneously isn't convenient :/

It's quite inconsistent from what I can tell. You might just have to try out a few cables until you find one it likes

@@RyanRetro1 unfortunately that's the common fix with all-in-one connectors. it promises it will always works well, no matter what you want do, but in facts it only works well sometimes. like Copilot or ChatGPT. I suppose the next USB version will be able to provide the hot water and milk for the tea time too ^^

I recorded myself talking about resolution options but then couldn't find any in the settings so had to cut that part out 😂 I might be missing the setting but I wasn't able to find any.

Waiting for extended Windows Emulation. And for an option you can try Exagear as a Winlator alternative (for example 5 in 1 build, which comes with a lot of options) and I found a lot of games plays there better than on winlator 7/8. And for winlator you could try different builds as well (7 glibc, 8 etc). Thanks.

Does the fan kick on loud?

In the default performance mode the fan is turned off. So far in my tests I've found very little difference between the performance modes so 99% of the time I'm playing with the fan off. I have tried upping the performance mode which turns the fan on in 'Quiet' mode and it really is very quiet. When using high performance mode, the fan comes on very loud and high-pitched. I'd personally never use the device that way. Off or Quiet are both working well for me.

Input latency is always a thing with wireless controllers, it's usually pretty minor. Bluetooth audio latency is usually more problematic. Have you tried any ear buds?

Yeah, even when I plugged it in with a charger later in the day, it wouldn't charge at all until I rebooted the device. That's happened twice now. The battery issues are one of the main reasons the product has been delayed by 2 weeks. After turning it off and on again, it charges fine.

Android device is just too much trouble using as a TV console, you still need the touch screen to do most things (settings, change apps etc). It is just not a pleasant couch experience.

Depends on the individual of course but I have a 'home theatre PC' for TV, streaming and gaming and I control a lot of it (especially tedious game settings) with a wireless USB remote that is basically an Air Mouse/Keyboard rolled into one package. It also happens to have the Android system buttons (Back, Home, Multitask) as prominent buttons. It makes everything a lot more couch friendly. @Ryan, have you already tested any sort of mouse with the Retroid Pocket 5?
