Retroid Pocket Mini Should You Buy It Review

Yes this may look familiar, the reason I took down the old video is below! This was because the entire Retroid Discord harassed and bullied me to the point where they banned me from their Discord. The entire Discord/Reddit is completely toxic the moment you say something is bad about their devices so I would suggest to stay away from this group all together. So after hearing some feedback even from the ***ALMIGHTY*** himself (RGC) on the RP5 I'm beginning to believe all that hate is because the Retroid community is a bunch of in denial fanboys, because they know I'm right, OR they're employees. I don't care if you hate my reviews, at least they're honest. I gave this device a chance by wasting my money on it for the channel hoping it MIGHT change my mind, and it had so many issues I needed to make them known. Heck every review I've heard said the same things about the Mini and some of you confirmed the same thing. Heck the RP5 (yes I know 90% of the reviewers are saying "this is a test unit blah blah blah") doesn't seem to be any good. The only person trying to hype this thing up is some new KZbin channel that literally received over 1500 Subscribers in a week and somehow got a review unit to boot. That doesn't look like a rigged channel to me if I have ever seen one lol. Remember people War can change but if you keep acting like children... Well as my favourite video game quoted "War....War never changes" might forever be a thing until you all open your dam eyes and witness the truth!

@EliasPfaiffer thanks after hearing what others have said about the 5, this made me rethink how much I don't care about what toxic people have to say. I try to help the community a lot but it appears that when I say something negative I get kicked in the face for it. There's a block button and hide user from my channel button so any negativity will be handled accordingly 👌

This is 100% a quality control issue. I have probably 50 hours on my RPmini and i beat Price of Persia using dolphin in that time and i've had zero crashes or throttling issues. Hopefully this is fixed for you when android 13 comes to the RPmini.

@@theenthusiast4218 even if that is the case the company didn't recognize that I wanted an exchange they just assumed "here's a shipping label so you can return it" plus the fact that the company has consistent quality control issues. I'm not disagreeing either perhaps you did finish a gamecube game on it but I'm trying to make the company more aware that it's not just sunshine and rainbows.

An absolutely necessary and valuable review. This holds a great deal more value than a cut and paste review of 'here's what games it runs'. The beauty of KZbin reviews is getting a completely unfiltered take from an 'average joe' from their bedroom. Thank you for pointing out some actual issues with the device from an end user perspective.

Glad you hear this type of criticism, rather than "you don't know anything" OR "you're wrong, I've never had any of these issues". What these people don't underage is that I've been using Android for over a decade and have owned approximately 100+ different Android devices. My first Snapdragon device was a Motorola from 2015 and even then the performance was great for the time. I also own/owned multiple handhelds including every Retroid since th 2+ so I have history with their "nonsense" never have I complained so much until they announced the Mini/5.

I'm happy to see that you decided not to be bullied into submission. Hopefully you'll also reinstate the rest of your Retroid content. You've already invested the time and effort into making it; keeping it offline is really only spiting yourself at this point. Like it or not, but, Retroids are popular. A lot of people discover new channels through searching for Retroid Pocket tutorials and reviews. I don't remember exactly how I discovered this channel; but, I remember that one of the first videos I watched here was a Short about a red Pocket 4 Pro that ended up hyping a giveaway for said Pocket 4 Pro. I guess I was researching if I should pick up a Pocket 4... Anyways; I'm nothing special and if I did something then you know that many other people are going to do the same thing for similar reasons. I'd encourage you to reinstate all of your Retroid videos so that future gamers can discover your channel the way that I did. Finally, what are you planning on doing with the Pocket (5) Mini? Is it going to be given away, sold, used for future tutorials, or returned to the seller (presumably Retroid themselves)? If it is returned I'd be interested in knowing how smoothly that process goes. Not a lot of people document that aspect of the hobby.

Thank you for your wisdom, I just thought to myself that after I removed all of those videos that those that will hate will hate regardless. I also have a plan for a new playlist for the 4 Pro to help others because never have I said I dislike anything with the 4 Pro model. Retroid is popular for sure, however I don't want to mislead anyone either. That's why a device like the Odin 2 for example is something I've pushed a lot and sure people might think it's too expensive but it's actually really not. Even Russ compared the Odin 2 to his RP5 the other day and people would bash me all the time about comparing the Odin 2 to the Retroid devices. I think comparing other products that are similar is part of a review process and if you don't like it (not you specifically) then move on because if I didn't have anything to compare my device too I'd technically just be 1 sided and biased with my review. I am working things out with Retroid to get a replacement hopefully, the RP5 might be visible on this channel in the future because I do want to see if they actually do fix things and what the quality actually looks like. So right now no plans, but I am still giving away the RP4 Pro red model however I'm doing giveaways differently so stay tuned for that because I have a cool idea planned for the holidays coming!

...Once upon a time I imported a flash cart that had serious issues with scrambled graphics, major slowdown & crashing. I tried everything to get it working correctly. I didn't want to spend more money & return it but I did and my replacement worked perfectly. It's unfortunate but sometimes these things happen with mass production. If I had to make a guess, I'd say the problem sounds like a RAM issue. One or more of the modules might not be seated correctly. Your gut is leading you in the right direction. RAM Reflow could be a potential solution. Personally I wouldn't even entertain it. They sold you a piece of junk. RMA

@solidust573 normally I would open up a device and change things or look at why they are broken. Heck someone gave us a sort of solution to fixing the loud ABXY buttons. But the fact that the device still crashed after resetting, and also won't accept any of my charging blocks when chatting it, tells me I got a dud for sure and I'm betting like one person said these processors are left overs.

The reason it squeaks is because they decided to put the screws at the top and bottom, instead of like every other, underneath. So there's nothing tightening the upper and lower shell together, apart from the plastic clips, which just don't do a very good.. hence the annoying squeaking😕

Yeah, I figured that too. After seeing the RP5, all I could think is the Mini was planned months before we saw anything about it. They probably already ordered all of the molds and glass front, etc, then changed everything from the abxy buttons not being up against the glass front to the ergonomics and said "well people will buy it anyways" and not care. Well hate to break it to you Retroid but I'm not going to sugar coat your QC this time. They also messed up colors, the Red does not even look like the color on the site. I have another issue with mine that I can only seem to use 1 out of the 8 chargers I own in my home otherwise it charge loops every 2 minutes or so but I didn't mention this because I only noticed last week. The point I'm making is that this device is literally a waste of money and instead of scamming people they should have taken it off their site or delayed it.

Also note this wasn't a I don't care what you say comment either. I just don't see a purpose to buying a device that a company rushes to people and has so many flaws. They should gather TESTERS outside their company and pay those testers so they don't loose business. This company has lost my business and I'm going to spread the word by means of my channel because that is my job.

Never said I hate any devices, I'm making it known that Retroid should stop rushing their devices because the last few devices they've released have had issues. Heck even the RP5 appears to have many issues.

@@yetitheeduardo I’m glad for the honesty. These devices can’t be evaluated in person before purchasing and are difficult to return. I’m getting tired of all the reviewers praising every device without going over the negatives, especially with Retroid. I have quite a few devices that I wished I had never bought after hearing all of the shilling by the regular reviewers only to find out color temperatures are atrocious or finding some other major flaw not mentioned. These kinds of reviews balance the playing field, so I appreciate it.

Main reason I want the RP5 is because it's going to come with Armbian support. It already has Rocknix and Portmaster support.

What's the point of that? Android is just as easy to setup for emulation plus has Android Native games support. Also the Odin 2 has Linux, but nobody cares so it's very raw Linux. I see no reason to put Linux on a different partition on a low end device like the 5 is. $220 for a 5 year old chip that is way less powerful than the $299 predecessor in 2024 isn't something I would push upon people.

@DNAMobileGaming I can run many PC games natively using Linux. Plus it's Linux, lightweight and Customizable just like Android.

@Pridetoons that's where getting a PC Handheld would come into play if you're looking to play PC games. I'd rather game then spend time tinkering to setup a different OS on an Android based handheld. That's why you never see me showing anything to do with Winlator on the channel. Sure it's promising but these processors aren't anywhere close to being perfect for Windows emulation for PC games.

@DNAMobileGaming PC Handhelds don't fit in your pocket or have good battery life. Like my RGB10 Max 3 or Max 3 Pro. Plus they're heavy and not as easy too carry.

The only devices that are pocketable are the DS series of devices these open faced devices with fans are in no way shape or form pocket friendly. I get the battery aspect however I've now had the Ally X for 2 weeks and the battery is way better than my regular Ally Z1.

Weird to me that both AYN and Retroid come from the same company but QC is so different... Well... Odin 2 also had issues fornthe first 6 months too...but at least they learnt sth from it. May be Retroid gets scared by a ton of low end competitors (I mean Anbernics...)

Oh trust me I had a video about these two companies being owned by the same company but not being transparent about it. I have had the Odin 2 since November 2023 and never had any problems with mine the day I got it either. The quality was perfect to me, and the performance was even astounding. Sure there was some memory leak issues and they broke the volume once. Plus the Desktop mode feature doesn't work properly still to this day, but that is minor OS issues. The fact that Retroid has had so many QC issues with their hardware, and OS issues that make the device unplayable baffles me. I didn't make any of this up for this review and was hopeful that the Mini would be good considering it sounds like they had the mini planned for a while and the 5 was an after thought.

Not still talking about it, just re released a video I removed because the community was completely toxic about MY PERSONAL OPINION on the device. I think it's funny how a few people have said the RP5 too has issues and isn't as performant as said Odin 2 and doubled down on that opinion. Why they did this? Probably so they don't get shadow banned from receiving review units. You know why the company never sent me a review unit the last few devices? They probably have seen my videos and know I know a lot more than I let on and will find flaws in things. I'm not perfect by any means and I know when the DNA Duo releases to expect people to give their HONEST opinion about it. If companies don't hear FLAWS in a device then they won't know what to change the next time. However RETROID has had so many issues from ergonomics, to hardware problems, to OS problems from the 2 onwards to the 5 that I don't understand why ANYONE would support this company anymore. Oh wait it's because every reviewer I've ever watched except Joey has hyped the thing up so they must be doing good.
