10:00 - This rant is very true. I love Ape Escape but using the left stick + a button press would probably work even better. Then the right stick would be freed up for camera control, and the dpad could be used to switch gadgets.
@RiekeLt8 жыл бұрын
13:40 "Having 2 jump buttons is pretty redundant". While this is true, if you press them together, you do a rocket dive. While not special, it's good for crossing vertical distances. And about the item switching: If you know Ape Escape 3, there is the thing where if you mash the square button for instance, you go through an item wheel without going to a pause menu of sorts. This is only present in the japanese version. Other fun stuff from a speedrunner's perspective: The slingshot is mainly used for a flying glitch, the water-gun is NOT needed to beat the game, with the other 2 new gadgets only used when it is NEEDED, like the monkeys in the huts. I'm one of the unlucky 5 who did a 100% run, and getting all collectibles and farming coins for it, got me 6 or 8 runs, which lasted for about 1h20m. All in all a really good review. Enjoyed watching it, seeing a non-japanese version, seeing some hallways I haven't seen in forever since we don't go for them normally.
@RetropolisZone8 жыл бұрын
Ah, I don't think I knew about the Rocket Dive. I did know about the ground slam by pressing the right stick in mid-air, but that's something else. And yeah, when I get to Ape Escape 3, one of the aspects I am sure to address is the item wheel aspect. You're saying it's only in the Japanese version? I remember using it all the time. Haha, the flying glitch is great. I learned about it after the review and managed to pull it off consistently after a little while. Neat little glitch, funnily enough one of the few I can think of. Are there any other serious glitches in this game? Anyway, thanks for watching and I am glad you found the video entertaining!
@RetropolisZone8 жыл бұрын
Huh. Strange that Ubisoft would remove it. I really enjoyed the item wheel feature in Ape Escape 3. Also, thanks for some of the additional information about glitches and sorry that I replied so late! I think I lost your reply somewhere in my notifications, haha.

I'm not an Ape Escape fan myself, but I will say that I found this video pretty interesting. Good job on it! One of my favourite PS2 platformers, known as Kya: Dark Lineage does use enemies as main collectables as well, but unlike Ape Escape that game utilizes a combat system that is separate from the main exploration and platforming. It's pretty in-depth and fun and even though there are only three different kinds of main enemies, they have little sub-types as well and learn from your attacks, which means that you have to think fast and constantly switch up your strategy. The highest type of enemy is the rarest variant but also the smartest and most dangerous, being immune to attacks involving their tail (as they cut off their own tails) as well as quickly teleporting before you can jump onto their backs. They learn very fast and their attacks are quick and strong, and honestly facing one such enemy one-on-one is one of my favourite things to do in that game. In fact, the combat all-around is one of my favourite things about it. If you ever get your hands on that game, i wish you a lot of fun with it! :)

just found this channel from exo's SA2 commentary video you were on, i gotta say this review was incredible. there did seem to be a few features you didn't pick up on such as jimmy's dive ability that can be performed by pressing both R1 and R2 at the same time or the ground pound ability performed by pressing L3 in midair. regardless this was a really deep video for such a simple game and i absolutely can't wait to see your video on ape escape 3. subbed, keep up the great work man

There's a bit of a problem with the ape escape series I always used to have, and that was the stress on your thumbs because of using dualshock or dualanalog. It always never resonated with me well, and always gave me thumb pains every now and then, leading me to use games that have dpad support for movement rather than exclusively Joystick movement. Games like Jet Set Radio HD are perfect on the joystick and dpad movement ape escape tried to make look good. Other than that, it's a solid franchise, and I love the Ape Escape 3 logo over all of them, even the european ones. I wish they kept that logo everywhere, but hey, I'm not gonna judge a really good franchise.

Personally I half disagree with your complaint about the game kicking you out of the level after collecting an amount of monkeys. While playing as jimmy you wouldn't have all the gadgets necessary to get the rest of the monkeys anyways, especially without the no-see all scope and magic punch. You're making a mandatory second run through the stages regardless. However when playing as spike, yes I can see how it can be annoying. Frankly everything should be unlocked when playing as spike. The no-see all scope, the rest of the levels, and the 3 hidden monkeys that can only be found in-game after beating Spector the first time.
@NekoHime778 жыл бұрын
I love this game also I like how in monkey soccer you get to use the monkeys that you catch in the levels. So you could play a game of monkey soccer and then go do some more levels then come back and take those moneys you just caught and use them in the monkey soccer mini game which is pretty cool imo.

did anybody else know that if you pressed the R1 button and R2 button at the same time you’ll dive rather than jump? it wasn’t explained anywhere in the game last i remember so it wouldn’t be surprising if no one found out; i found it out once when i accidentally hit them both when i was young
@lacertus27Ай бұрын
I was hoping to find someone talking about this. It was in the game manual, which I used to practice reading when I was younger. I’m surprised they couldn’t spare a telephone for it, but it wasn’t needed to clear any of the training stages like the ground slam was. I remember using it in the magnet training stage since there wasn’t a way to attack those red-orange enemies with the magnet alone

I think you're being too harsh on this game. I find it very difficult to find anything bad to say about the game, and I am not wearing nostalgia glasses since I played this game for the first time a month ago. Also, you suggest that this is an easy game? This is a difficult game; If I hadn't farmed lives in Ninja Hideout, I would've Game Overed multiple times. This is not a 10/10 game, but there's very little they could've done better. Also, you can use the watergun to activate certain mechanisms and use it against fire breathing apes. Maybe one complaint could be the lack of innovation since most of the gadgets are copy+pasted from AE1.
@stormyascent69828 жыл бұрын
and as somebody mentioned, the water gun can repair vehicles.
@RetropolisZone8 жыл бұрын
I can see where you're coming from; my reviews are very critical. Not because I want to make games come off as shit, but because but no game is perfect and I just like critiquing or praising a game as thoroughly as possible. The videos are this long for a reason; 42 minutes of kissing the game's ass wouldn't be very realistic. lol Anyway, I think I said in the conclusion that Ape Escape 2 is great and better than the original? It's just lacking of innovation and has its flaws (like every game I've ever played).
@stormyascent69828 жыл бұрын
I stopped watching when you were covering the mini games, because I thought it was just so trivial and nitpicking so I had to quit watching. After hearing your final words, I slightly changed my opinion on your review. =)

Well, that's good. lol Thanks. :) I can see why you'd view my videos as nitpicky and trivial, but they are more analysis than review, where I point out positives and negatives no matter how small or big may be. That's just the style I have, being in-depth. Sorry if it came off the wrong way.
