Just my 10 cents worth on the bin, but as another buyer offered more, of course the seller is going to accept it. Whether that is right or wrong is best up for debate. I think it was obvious the lady was not going to accept too much lower than £20. At that point you have to make a snap decision as people will jump in quickly if you are too hesitant.

Haggling is not a science, but an art. If an item has been priced with a huge margin left, then paying the asking price is both smart and time-efficient. I personally try to be considerate with my haggling, as asking for huge discounts (half off or even a third first thing in the morning) can give the seller the impression I’m not a serious buyer. I also try to gauge where the person is in terms of their lowest price and either pay it, or thank them and move on. Unfortunately, casual sellers/family sellers do not really appreciate the “etiquette” of selling and just want to be rid of the stuff, but this should not be mistaken for them being prepared to sell their items dirt cheap. As most of their items were probably bought at retail price, they are likely more aware of the value of their stuff. Thankfully, this is not always the case, but that is why haggling is an art.
