Bravo, bro. You took me back to my first apartment in Brooklyn, NY. 1984. Once Thelma Houston's Used To Hold Me So Tight came out, i went and bought a Casio CZ-1000 synth, a Yamaha QX5 sequencer and an Alesis HR-16 drum machine. I was hooked.

I love how experimental music was then! And all of the cross inspiration. Listening to this piece - and I could be wrong - I hear influences of Peter Gabriel Genesis, obviously classical, and brass and drum voicings that were being experimented with across genres. Art of Noise really did experiment. Great arrangement. Great memories!

They are 40 years old and was doing this back in a time when memory was expensive and limited. My dear friend you are a fantastic keyboardist and just so amazing at what you do. This should be seen by millions because it’s a top demo you done here. Once again you’re outstanding and thanks for sharing with us. Also great to see the Emulator lol. More than a year before this became a hit I'd seen a movie, Liquid Sky (1982), of which I remembered a sound very well and that I recognized immediately when The Air of Noise released this song (1985). The song and the composition are way better (be it rather 'rich'), but in those days it felt a bit second-hand to me. You can check it out, The trailer of that movie is on YT. Wikipedia says it (indeed) used the CMI.

That “E. Grand” tone from the Emulator II does sound like a forerunner of the “Piano 3” preset on the Roland MKS-20 module. (I’ve been obsessed with that sound since 2014 when I found it was uploaded to another Roland model, the VR-09; I previously thought it was a sound Yamaha had synthesized based on their own CP line.) Have you got an MKS-20 in your arsenal, RS? If so, it would be great to hear how that present stacked up on Genesis or Howard Jones covers.
@retrosound724 ай бұрын
Agreed. A wonderful piano sound. So lush. I don't have a MKS20 but I know it. Thank you 🙌
@Shred_The_Weapon4 ай бұрын
Absolutely, @@retrosound72. Interestingly, I saw one for sale at one of my local Hudson Valley retailers around 20 years ago (2004). I had thought of getting it for the piece of history that it is, a digital piano module that used synthesis instead of sampling.
