Can't recall ever seeing that Unigate ad - the voice sounds familiar. Newspaper commercials were always the ones to fast forward, for sure. Look After Yourself must have been a Public Information Film - these were very popular in the 70s and 80s - looks like it's filmed at Primrose Hill, London. 'Anchor Butter: Spacewalk' (1985/6). Nice 'BT Call Stimulation: Neptune' ad from 1984/5 directed by Paul Weiland. William Franklyn and Paul Eddington in the Qualcast ad. 'Colgate Blue Minty Gel: Baggy Trousers' based on the Madness song - voiceover sounds familiar - one of the DJs of the time I think. Captain Birdseye played by John Hewer from 1967 till 1998. The David Bellamy Heinz Beans ad dates from 1989 - a year later they did one featuring Jonathan Ross. Yes - familiar faces in the Electricity Board ad - swimmer Duncan Goodhew / actor Richard Briers (1989). The lady is familiar - thought it was Jackie Collins but don't think it is. Looks more like Kate O' Mara. 'Golden Shred: Postman' is from 1998/9. 'Gales Honey: Toast Master' (1992/3). 'Kraft Philadelphia Light: Anybody There' (1992/3). There was a whole series of these ads in the late 80s / early 90s - Sara Crowe and Ann Bryson. www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/482548.sara-crowe-philadelphia-cheese-advert-made-my-name/ Final ad is 'Super Noodles: Wasted Away' (1998/9)

The exercise advert was hilarious, but I'm sure it would be complained about today, oh well. The Sun being it's hypocritical self again, it's always first with the moralising while it produces sleazy non-news like this. I miss Safeway, was my favourite supermarket back in the day.
@AtheistOrphan2 жыл бұрын
Plus of course the ‘moralising’ Sun was quite happy to publish full-page photos of topless 16 year-olds every day. I’m going to have to look up what happened to Safeway now.

So, someone here can likely finally answer a question for me, I hope. What exactly is "pickle"? Some people tell me it's like chutney or relish, but it's not something you get in the US, so I have no way to know for myself. It's so funny to see how British people mow their lawns. American lawn mowers, other than the ones you walk behind are really big. The ones here in this video look like they're made of plastic. I didn't see one like that in the US until the last couple of decades. Bird's Eye is also in the US, but they don't sell anything other than frozen vegetables stateside, as far as I can find out. I love how the UK, even back then, seemed to actually care about the planet. I miss Safeway. It hasn't been in most US states for decades.

Pickle can be any number of different picked items in a jar, but generally it's Branston Pickle we go mad for. I don't actually know what it's made from, but it's fricking delicious! With cheese, pork pies, sausage rolls .. anything, really. I couldn't have a ploughman's lunch without some Branston (or any of the decent knock-offs).
@paulwesterman2 жыл бұрын
Yes it's like a chutney (made same way) but chunkier and not as sweet. It's bloody lovely, cold meats and cheese are just great with it!
@paulosullivan34722 жыл бұрын
Yeah its a bit like chutney but it has big bits of vegetables in it and its a bit more acidic tasting. I often have it with crackers and cheese or else put it on the side of a salad.
@juliethompson17862 жыл бұрын
Branson is a kind of chutney but it is tangier and more vinegary. The traditional Branston is made with chunky pieces of vegetable but you can get in a smoother version too which is good for sandwiches. Perfect with cheese and ploughman’s lunches. They also used to make Fruity Sauce which I used to like with a cooked breakfast.
@dieseldragon6756 Жыл бұрын
British lawn mowers have always been around that size because larger lawns weren't so common in the UK even back then as they were in the US. You might start seeing British size mowers more and more on that side of the pond as time goes on, land prices go up, and newer homes are built closer to British dimensions than American. 🏘🇺🇸💸 We still have ride-ons available for larger grounds of course, but only the Royal Family have any cause to buy those nowadays... 💷🇬🇧😉

Ah yes, the Flymo/Qualcast wars. Things got quite bitchy.
@RetroSteveUK2 жыл бұрын
It was a weird one, that. I remember my step-dad being fiercely loyal to Qualcast - Flymos were for posh people. Looking back, I know now it was just him being conditioned to think like that by advertising. He must have had a Qualcast when the ads first dropped.
@OofusTwillip2 жыл бұрын
David Jason accidentally almost cut off his toes while using a Flymo. Of course, a person could do that with any lawn mower.
