Part of the issue is that for some reason light gray in this video is too close to "white" (so three of the puyos look nearly identical when that shouldn't be the case), but yeah for the later games they gave the puyos more unique patterns rather than using checkerboard to fake two more shades.

No. You missed the ENTIRE point of the video. This is a comparison of the versions/ports of the original 1991 Puyo Puyo (and most of the more advanced systems being ports of the 1992 Arcade one). The reason non-PuyoPuyo-branded games are in this video is because they're reskins of mostly the same engine, the most blatant of which being Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. (which, by the way, was so blatant because it was just a localization, since the original mega drive version never made it out of japan). If Sonic Mania should've been a part of this, then why not the original and remakes of Puyo Puyo Tsuu? Why not the entire series? Because that's not the point of the video. The video showcases the similarities between the versions/ports of the first game in spirit.

The FM Towns version is baffling. Every version besides it and the Game Boy looks quite nice and fun. Smooth, too My faves are the Genesis, PC98, SNES, X68000, Game Gear and PC Engine ports. The localizations are neat too

The different names of most of the characters in the English arcade game made me do a bit of letter-changing with the original names based on the next piece preview names, for example, Draco Centauros is Drago Gentauros.

BANGER! I love so much Puyo Puyo! And i like how you add Mean Bean Machine and Kirby Avalanche/Ghost Trap too. One thing is the JP Arcade and World Arcade have different voice acting. Characters name are different and obiously the JP version has JP text.

The guy who made Puyo puyo is a nurse assistant now for a nursing home or something. He sadly sold the rights to Puyo puyo to Sega to keep his business afloat for a few more years, but then Compile, one of the best video game companies of all time, went bankrupt.

As iconic as "Theme of Puyo Puyo" is am I alone in thinking that most versions of the song were absolutely grating on the ears? It's a very complicated tune, to be sure, but some of that instrumentation just made it a painful listen. Nothing like Korobeiniki. At least modern arrangements make the song feel less like it's trying to kick the door to your sanity down. Also, excellent compilation!

Sega Mark III/Master System was already discontinued in Japan by the time of this game's release in 1991. Game Gear version of Puyo Puyo if played on an American Game Gear displays Puzlow Kids and used an English translation. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine wasn't released in Japan until later. Kirby's Avalanche/Kirby's Ghost Trap wasn't even released in Japan at all. The Game version is best played on the Super Game Boy. The PC Engine CD has voice acting and 8-bit audio it's awesome. Honorable mention is Puyo Pop on the Nokia N-Gage.

I remember not too long ago I tried installing the Winsows 95 version on my Windows 11 laptop. It didn't work. Either it couldn't boot up or made my anti-virus angry, so I gave up and downloaded Puyo Puyo Sun, which looking back was the right option. It's a much better port than this. Those animations and music are terrible! My personal favorite is the Super Famicom. Yeah, its in a lower resolution, but that music is incredible. I also like Kirby's Avalanche. It's very charming somehow and fits surprisingly well. I also love how sassy Kieby can be. Mean Bean Machine sucks. Ugly and terrible music. Also, the Master System port is literally just the Game Gear, but more zoomed out. Thanks TecToy... There was also a PS1 version in a compilation called Puyo Puyo Box. It's a port of the Mega Drive version. Then there's also an N-Gage version strangely named Puyo Pop, desite being a port of the original. It's got new music and weirdly color characters, like blue haired Draco, but it's one of the better handheld versions actually.

Holy crap the Windows and Macintosh versions' soundtrack is bad. Almost sounds like a bootleg. Speaking of bootlegs, you missed the Spectrum Holobyte version, Qwirks. It replaces the characters with uncanny looking pre-rendered animals that look like they were made using only simple 3D primitive shape templates.
