Not sure if you noticed, but while Luke is being tempted by the dark side, he is wearing all black. A lot of action scenes end up being pointless. You could take them out of the narratives and lose nothing. They're just, "Oh it's been 10 minutes. We need some shooting or chasing." Lucas's action scenes tended to have an internal narrative structure within them which is why they are more interesting to watch.

Beautiful reaction. You caught on to much of the best parts of this episode, including Luke’s penultimate moment of looking at his hand and realizing that this path of anger would lead to him becoming his father. Victory for Luke was so so different from most of the 80’s “action heroes” and hi who usually won through violence. Luke beating Vader down was actually the moment he was closest to losing because he was closest to falling to the Dark Side. His victory is actually the moment he throws his light saber away and refuses to give in to his own anger. It was a unique way for a hero to win the day that felt special when I was a kid. I was surrounded by Stallone’s and Schwarzenegger’s who always blew up the bad guys. Luke just stops hope, breaths, and stands up to the villain and for what he believes in. Powerful. I saw these a kid. My father took me to see each one when they were in theaters. I loved the characters, the action scenes (especially the space battle, where the big ships come along side each other and exchange shots, just like pirate ships), and especially how powerful and evil the emperor is. I don't remember ever wondering if my own father would or could go bad like Vader did because he was always a good father to us (and still is) and always good to my mother (and still is). As an adult I really appreciate the personality and the performance of Ian McDiarmid's Emperor. We see a lot more of him in the prequels, played by McDiarmid, and in my opinion he's one of the best characters in the whole prequel trilogy.

The first time I saw ROTJ in 83 I’m not sure I wouldn’t be taken out of the moment by seeing someone in their 20’s because we didn’t know how force ghosts worked at that time. At that point I just figured they all can come back. If George wanted to keep the flow of the total saga then I understand getting a ghost of Hayden bc that was how he looked before he went dark and we all would recognize him because we watched in chronological order. I personally don’t care for it bc I originally interpreted it as the projection of who you are when you died and I saw it that Anankin was redeemed when he tossed Palpy down the shaft so the force ghost was a projection of his spirit when he died on DS2 and his physical scars were ‘healed’ by the light side.

A fan story…..I was in elementary school when this came out, me and my best friend(being “nerds” at the time) where hoping to get to go to a theater to see this. It wasn’t a common thing for kids in those days. The last thing we saw together was the Christmas special…..needless to say our parents thought we were crazy. So on one day my sister(as a babysitter) picked us up from school and said…we’re not going home yet(she happens to be 9 years older than me)….we park, and start walking to the local theater. There it was. We got to have soda, we got to have candy which she snuck in, popcorn too. It felt like we were seeing old friends…thinking back….it was $.99 night….it became a memory that cost her personally under $15. Plus putting up with her younger brother and friend. Sorry for randomness of this story. But wasn’t just about the movies back then, it was the experience too.

A couple points: - One of the reasons Yoda explicitly confirms Darth Vader as Luke's father was Lucas had noticed that many didn't seem to believe it. Even James Earl Jones when he read the line immediately thought "He's lying!" Because, of course, bad guys lie. - There is a deleted scene of Luke on Tattooine building his new lightsaber in Ben's adode. He's in shadows and hooded and acts in a bit of a sinister fashion, making you wonder if he's turned to the dark side. - You can see the literal progression of special FX throughout the three movies. The battle of Endor sequence was MIND-BLOWING at the time, and it holds up.

The Emperor was first identified as "Palpatine" on-screen in the prequels, but he was known by that name already among fans because the books, comics etc had used that name for a long time - it goes all the way back to the novelisation of Star Wars from 1976 if you can believe that. It was unclear for a long time whether that was his first name, surname, regnal name etc but a spinoff novel "Tarkin" in 2014 gave his first name as "Sheev". I think the fandom is still iffy about that one but "Palpatine" has long been accepted.

The significance of Luke's reaction to Vader's mechanical hand was directly tied to the vision he had of Vader into the cave when training with Yoda. In the cave Luke saw himself under the mask, and when he cut off his hand and made the connection with his own hand, he saw again his future self if he followed his father to the dark side. That gave him the perspective to resist and be true to himself and his training, once and for becoming a true Jedi.

Then in 1997, we had the chance to watch all three movies in theaters again when George Lucas release the special editions. That just made them all the more amazing since mom and dad got to experience them again with me as they had back when they originally released. "Empire" is by far the best made of the trilogy, and "Jedi" brings everything to such a great close. Still, in my heart of hearts I will never stop marveling at what a small wonder of a film the original "Star Wars" is. My first life memory is seeing Star Wars: A New Hope in theaters back in 1977. My Mom picked up my friend and I from school early to go and see the Empire Strikes Back. For Return of the Jedi, my parents and I waited for about 8 hours in line to see it on premiere day! We would watch groups go in, see it, and they would come out telling us how much we were going to love it. We would cheer as groups came out from seeing it. When it was our turn to go in, I had a feeling of excitement---to this day---I've never felt before. I have had the fortune to have experienced the amazing phenomenon of Star Wars back then. You have to remember----- we had never seen anything like this before. It was a visual effects game changer. And it came out at a time our country needed to smile and laugh the most. It was history.

I saw the original trilogy when I was 10 (I'm 33 now). My mom got the 20th anniversary VHS box set for her birthday and we watched one a night for 3 nights in a row. I immediately loved them, and I remember sitting next to my mom watching ROTJ at the end panicking when the Emperor is electrocuting Luke, asking her "Is Luke gonna die!!??" cause seriously, Darth Vader lets his son get electrocuted a LONG TIME before he intervenes. I remember being absolutely terrified of the emperor! Loved the ewoks, they're so cute! As for the scene when Luke cuts off Vader's hand, I think there's a lot to it- like, Luke sees that he's doing just what the emperor wants, also there's the fact that this is clearly not the first time Vader's lost that hand since it's mechanical, plus Luke's just done what his father did to him in the last movie. It's like he sees that it's a cycle of violence and resolves to put an end to it, or at least no longer participate in it. The prequels get a lot of hate and I do think the original trilogy is better, but I'd be very curious to see you react to the prequels. There's definitely good aspects to them.

YES! She definitely needs to see the prequels. They are different in style, but they add a lot more weight to the overall plot.

I thought it was interesting how they used Luke's clothes in each film to show his descent into the dark side. In each film you see what he is wearing go from light to dark to show how he is moving away from being an innocent young man.

Shanelle, love. You are performing a huge public service to the Star Wars community in being an avatar for us to reexperience the pure exhilaration and uphoric jubilation of watching the grand space opera saga is through the eyes of the uninitiated who is visibly moved and appears genuinely transfixed and appreciative. It's the only way for us galactic inner stellar weirdos to come within proximity of that first time. Thank you for that and your witty fun self deprecating text blurbs throughout. The snarky is strong with this one. 🤙

My family went to a preview screening of Return of the Jedi when I was 4 years old. It's my earliest memory of seeing a film in the theater. My mom's favourite story about watching return of the Jedi was me reassuring her not to be scared of Jabba because he's just a puppet.

I love that you were able to get the original theatrical edits. I haven't seen those since I was 10 or 11 when they were on VHS. I'm most familiar with the 1997 Special Editions as that's the set I bought myself as a teenager. Some changes I like, some I really hate, so it was cool to get to revisit some despecialized scenes again. I really think these films are best on a first viewing as a non-specialized edition. Especially as a filmmaker looking back on them. These movies literally were what got me interested in filmmaking so I owe them a lot.

Also, you had some really great observations. I have been watching many, many reactions and I never heard anyone's takeaway be that Luke saved his dad from the Emperor. That is so personal and almost visceral. Normally, folks are like, Luke turned Vader back to the light. Luke brought Vader back to the good side. Not, Luke saved his dad from the Emperor, not from the darkside, but from Palpatine himself. Like Palpatine was the sick predator in all this. And how you drew the parallel that Luke didn't save himself, he saved his dad. That is a really beautiful take on it. Let me also remark, that the remastered version had Hayden C as Vader's force ghost at the end. I kinda got used to it, so finally seeing old Anakin again after all these years in his Jedi robes and smiling was such a joy. And for the record, I think the original Jabba music number was epic. The singer with the lips was the best! The stiff dance, the choppy voice. It worked so well. When they redid it was CGI of same character, it just wasn't the same. Was better and more alien the other way. And funner.

SO glad you watched the de-specialized version. My ranking is Empire, Star Wars, Jedi. I saw Jedi in theaters when I was 8 years old, but Empire is still the most nostalgic for me, and I think just the best of the three. Luke lost his saber in Empire when his hand was cutoff. That's why he built a new one.

A note about Luke's apparel throughout the trilogy... In A New Hope, we see Luke in all white most of the movie. This represents his innocence and humble upbringing when he is catapulted into "a larger world". In The Empire Strikes back, we see him in grey. This is to show his vulnerability and how he could be tempted by the dark side. In Retyrn of the Jedi, he wears all black showing that he is straddling the line between light and dark. After the Emperor is destroyed, Luke's tunic is opened at the top showing a triangle of grey. This represents his moving away from the pull of the darkness. Funny how just a simple choice of wardrobe can tell a story.

I don't know if it's been confirmed or not, but I like to think that's why Anakin's face is white underneath. To show that under the darkness, he had light.
