Return to Dark Tower Solo: Taking Advantages (Alliances+Gritty)

In this video, for the first time on Solo Playthroughs, Greg presents a playtrough of Return to Dark Tower, the recently crowdfunded reimagining of an old classic brought back to life by Restoration Games. A tower looms ominiously over the four kingdoms of the land and a new inhabitant is causing turmoil to reign across the various terrains. Our heroes must quest to draw this source of evil from the tower itself and then confront it head on to vanquish it once and for all. Standing in the way of this is a variety of brutal enemies and enigmatic dungeons. To emerge from battles and dungeons uncorrupted, the heroes will need to gather allies, purchase treasures, gather gear, discover potions, and recruit warriors. All of these things provide advantages which can be spent to thwart the harms that constantly threaten to bring failure to our brave protagonists. Featured in this playthrough will be the contents of the Alliances Expansion and the game will be played on Gritty difficulty (i.e., Hard mode). Additionally, for the first time on the channel in any game, Greg will be playing with house rules that he uses to enhance his experience of Return to Dark Tower (both the rules themselves and the reasoning for them will be discussed at length early in the video).

Yeah - speaking from personal experience, this is probably right. It's soooo close to a great game though, which I find really frustrating. Still, judging by the last Kickstarter, selling this one at some point in the future likely won't be that hard. This game definitely has its target audience, even if its not us. :)

@@SoloPlaythroughs I know some people are fans of more "relaxing" games when it comes to challenge levels and I sure they will be happy with this one but for me I relish a good challenge in a good design and that keeps me coming back. Robinson Crusoe, Mage Knight, Spirit Island, etc. Thanks again.

I was playing the glyphs the same way you were! and it was annoying having to see what glyph was in the region I was moving into it. Thank you for clearing that up!

Hey, DMBuc! Yeah - I wish the rules had used a term like “current region” that would contrast with “home kingdom” because it gets confusing which one is being discussed at times. Gameplay became a lot smoother when I learned I was making this mistake!

I definitely agree with your criticisms, I love the game but at like month 4, things get busted pretty easily though

No doubt. I was hoping to see something in the latest Kickstarter that would indicate a maturation of the rules to deal with the power spike problem, but it doesn't seem like they want to touch the rules at all. I guess it's hard to argue that Restoration is doing something wrong too much considering they are crushing it - and good for them. :) Just means I'll likely be moving on from this game faster than I would have originally expected, even while it remains a game I'd recommend everyone play at some point for the experience.
