I personally would ike to see a revival of Second Empire arch.

Modernist architecture is a style from the 20th centuery and not the same as contemporary architecture which this video seems to conflate. Modern archistecture is not, “overwhelmingly preferred by the intelligentsia,” it is simply the cheapest and most energy efficient to save cost and maximise profits.
@exquofonte2 ай бұрын
you are right that modernist and contemporary don't necessarily equate to the same thing in this context, and I'm well aware how modernist architecture came about in the early 20th century, but they share their rejection of the traditional (time-tested) methods and standards of the past. I accept your second critique; I would challenge the idea however that using traditional proportions and scale is somehow intrinsically less cost or energy efficient.

Very accurate description. Most people think architectural "styles" are just different veneers on otherwise identical buildings. Feudal architecture calls for a feudal society and economy.
@insertacoin7382 ай бұрын
@@exquofonte I think the issue with traditional proportions and scale is because the modern building are designed from the inside-out to maximise the amount of space, and ultimately profit, the facade follows that. In traditional architecture the facade was designed as the main element and the inside followed the facade. So it is more expensive to do the latter.
@exquofonte2 ай бұрын
@@insertacoin738 interesting. As Michael Diamant and others have proposed, we could build essentially the same buildings we're building now but cutting out the deleterious proportions, colors, etc. This would not impede on space, and in fact would increase profit, as 'traditional' buildings are always seen as more desirable.

Please return to traditional architecture! Return to beauty!

@exquofonte exactly. The average person hates modernist architecture and loves traditional.... unfortunately the self proclaimed "elites" love destroying all beauty. Have you seen the "Aesthetic city" youtube channel?

Good video and good thesis. The only thing that is lacking is the historicity of the concepts you are arguing about. Modernism and others movements in architecture emerge on a very specific societal and cultural context and are fruits of it. They are not something that born and exist by themselves.

True. This is certainly not a thorough analysis, just a parallel I thought worth pointing out

I do find it finny though that the "traditional" school is still very international. Or well, Rome is not the capital for most countries. But I'm also a full on globalist futurist, so it may be funny just to me.
@exquofonte2 ай бұрын
By 'traditional' I just mean using time tested proportions and standards, taking into account things like human scale and climate, not the Greco-Roman style or any particular cultural style. This is a common point of confusion when discussing this topic I admit
@Fedacking2 ай бұрын
@@exquofonte But the thing is that the big marble columns of the greco roman style that you highlighted in some examples is explicitly way beyond human scale and not really appropriate to the climate, as not everywhere is the mediterranean. It is pretty tho.

This is a dumb video. As if you can defeat modernist architecture by calling it ugly multiple times and deliberately not grappling with the fact that most revivalist architecture is soulless trash. Architecture doesn’t have to be simple, but saying that you like Disney cosplay architecture is instantly discrediting.
@exquofonte2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if you're trolling but if not, I agree that much revivalist architecture lacks taste and I have no desire to make everything look like Disneyland :) That said, my argument goes a bit deeper than calling it ugly. I have another video on modernist architecture that critiques it in more detail if you'd like to check it out
